    I love his character so much. He'd rather have his children resent him than let them know the truth about their mother and ruin their memories even though she did try to kill the twins. In the end he even gave his life for them. Such a great character

      Yeah, Hugh was a great dad and husband. He was broken without his wife but he tried his best for his kids.

    Hugh’s story breaks my heart. Olivia is met with mostly compassion if not pity by their children, where Hugh is met with so much resentment for not being able to be both parents. He still tried so hard to be a good father.

      I know, I think he often gets overlooked as a good but flawed man. He never really recovered after his wife died and never got to really closure. He knew his wife was still haunting the house but did not know what to do.

      I agree.. he was treated badly by his children for simply trying to keep them safe and their mother’s image intact!

      @aikikaname6508 11 днів тому +1

      @@C.kirk1287He wasn’t ’treated badly.’ From their POV, they lost their mother, and after that awful loss he then dumped them on an Aunt they probably didn’t know super well and it appears he wasn’t very present from then on.
      From their POV, he abandoned them when they needed him most and he basically stopped being an actual parent.
      It’s completely inevitable that their relationship with him would be shattered, it’s tragic as they don’t have the context of why he did it.
      He made multiple wrong choices that were understandable, like not destroying the house and lying about what went down even well into adulthood when they deserved to know some of it, but it seems he too was being manipulated by the house although not as directly as Olivia.

    No matter how many times I watch this, I love Hugh Crain's character more and more. He was always doing his best to protect his family, even though his methods were sometimes misguided, he did the best he could. Watching his final sacrifice was heartbreaking and shows the beauty of love.

      Yes, Hugh was a broken man. He tried to protect his family but it just made them hate him. I am glad in the end at least Steve came to understand Hugh and make amends.

    Hugh is the tragic, flawed, deeply relatable unsung hero of Hill House.

      He really is, it was tragic to see how much his kids came to resent him.

    The poor Hugh is doomed to fail. If he had told that their mother died pushed by a ghost after trying to kill them (and that mom killed Abigail) and now the evil house want to kill and trap all of them for eternity... I doubt his children would have believed him. They would have ended up wanting to verify his statements by going to visit the house ... and the story would have ended the same way, or worse.
    The house always wins.

      @@Marie-PoilBelle for Hugh, I like to think that he was able to foil the house in the end. He was able to save the rest of his children at the cost of his life but notice that the house was always more interested in the children and the least interested in Hugh. Maybe by now being part of the house he can at least keep Olivia at bay by giving her some peace.

    Your analysis of Hugh is amazing. I really felt his tragedy now that I’m a father and his determination to try and be strong over his failures makes him so relatable. He was always meant to be the person that passes the torch on and somehow knew it…yet he accepted the task without question or misgiving.

    • @hauntedhues

      Thank you for your comment! Hugh is very underrated and it was frustrating to see how his kids treated him, but I understand their frustrations with him, he was absent when they really needed him. Sadly he could not recover after losing his wife and he wanted to shield his children from Hill House. Just truly tragic all around. He was a broken man but he tried his best to mend his family.

    yet another great installement! I really like Hugh as a character because he acts as a sort of anchor for the viewer who is most likely looking at the paranormal events from a logical angle. i also really enjoyed your interpretation of the pocket watch metaphor - his whole character motivation can basically be condensed into the symbolism of it. i suppose olivia is next up?

    • @hauntedhues

      Thank you for watching! I noticed each character had a object token so it was fun to dissect what the writers were thinking for each family member. Yes, Olivia is next and probably going to be the most interesting because she basically becomes the main antagonist on the show. Hopefully it won't take as long as Hugh’s video did haha. Thanks again for watching. It motivates me to make more!

      @@christophermaccool8029 seems like the writers wanted a fresh update to the story. Since the story has already been adapted so many times, I think they wanted to make a more character driven narrative. Making it in our current modern time, makes it more relatable. Spooky enough that it might make you think twice about flipping an old manor haha

      I think he wanted to carry his burden for his children, not only that I think he deserves to suffer for what happened to his wife. Olivia and him made each other whole, without her he becomes lost and broken. Unable to fix himself.

    He was a perfect husband and father. He was practical but so loving with it. This is very rare for a practical minded people. They are usually very arrogant & ignorant. I suppose him not listening was he’s ignorance. I still don’t understand why the children went to live with their aunt. Was he imprisoned for the murder if he’s wife? They don’t explain hes absence and why he wasn’t there for he’s children?
    The disrespect they show him when he returns for Nell’s funeral was heartbreaking. Yet he was still very patient with them.

    • @hauntedhues
      @hauntedhues  3 місяці тому +1

      @@NicolaRoberts-bw9um Yes, Hugh was a great father and husband before, but after Olivia's death he became very distant. I think her death really broke him. We don't get to see how he fathered the children after Olivia, but from context clues, it seems like he was not around. I don't think he could handle it and that is why he left them to be raised by their aunt. He returns and redeems himself in the end, but he very much was absent for a lot of his children's lives. Steve and Shirley had to act as parental figures for the other siblings and that is why they grew so angry and resentful. So I don't think he is a bad man, father or husband, but because of the events of Hill House, it left him broken and a shell of his former self.

    I'm just barely starting this video and already worried about the accuracy. Hugh did not hire Mr Dudley, the family has been employed by the owners of Hill House since the Hill family lived there and they were likely employed by whoever owned the house after the death of the Hills. Hugh merely became their new employer along with being owner of the house and the employment contact for Dudley would have gone to whoever bought the house when he flipped it.

    It took me a few watches to understand his character. I realized he didn’t see the ghost until nearly the end.. so it’s hard for a logical person like Hugh to understand exactly how to handle everything.

    I think he knew all along about that house but most believers in ghosts believe the dead can not hurt but the living can and I think that's what Hugh thought until his wife died and started going mad in episode one hugh shuts the twins bed room door and leaves then turns around to find the bedroom door open again
