We also need to consider the fact that the Fulani jihads were actually a form of intra-African colonialism. The Fulani were colonists of the Hausa. This was not a shared enterprise by any measure. The Fulani took from the Hausa and integrated into their governmental structure

This gives too much credit to the Fulani for city states that were already there that Fulani simply took over imo. It’s not like the Fulani destroyed and rebuilt everything in their image. The quote from Ms. Asma’u proves this. We were nomads (with no traditions of building houses) and now we get to live in houses (that the Hausa already had built lol).

So a common fact about my people, there are two kinds of Fulbe, Fulani is a Hausa name, there are two kinds of Fulbe, The pastoral and the sedentary. The nomad and the town Fulbe. And those in between. It’s an interesting dynamic. My parents are from both sides. Depending on where you look, the architecture changes based upon its purpose. I’ve seen pictures at home of villages build in front of large trenches or hill forts and mountains. These were defensive layouts should there be slave raids and European incursions like in the Cameroon. Much more research is needed. 🙏

You're mixing two different cultures and eras. The hausa city-states have been in existence for a millenia before the advent of Usman Dan-fodio jihad in 1807. So most of the architectural designs belong to purely hausa ingenuity. Fulani architecture can be found in Futa Jallon and Futa toro in the Sene-Gambia area of West Africa. Do a deeper dive into this history. Cheers.

Who’s bankrolling the fallacy of Hausa-Fulani propaganda. The Hausas are different in culture and features to the Fulani people. Fulani people are of different ethnic groups from Hausas. The Fulani ethnic groups are the minority in Nigeria and they are the ones causing problems in Nigeria insecurity , economy and religion intolerance. They have made the majority Hausas children to become Amajiris that roam about streets begging for alms and money instead of embracing quality education to liberate the Northern Nigeria. The Fulani leaders and elites used Islamic religion to enslaved the Hausa ethnic groups in Nigeria and they are pushing their religious intolerance and backward ways of thinking to the Southern regions of Nigeria. The Fulani and the Sokoto caliphate are the ones the British colonial government handed to political leadership over to when they left Nigeria and since then Nigeria have not settled from one military coup and corrupt government to the other. The Fulani have a grip on political power in Nigeria because they are believe that’s all they’ve got over all other ethnic groups to feel superior and entitled according to the brainwashing of their leader, late Usman Dan Fodio. I weep for my beloved country, Nigeria and the mess we’ve found ourselves in.

These fulani were sometimes members of kings courts..
Usman Dan Fodio was born and grown up in hausa society. And after gaining islamic knowledge with hausa islamic teachters, he became a clérical member of Sarkin Gobir Bawa Jan Gorzo court.
During a Ramadan feast, Bawa Jan Gorzo as usually decided to give gift (Goron Sallah) to the Marabouts of his court. Dan Fodio said that he didn"t want this gift but he wanted that the king promised him 6 things:
      - To go to preach all over Gobir Kingdom;
      - Women must veil themselves;
      - on taxes ....
The Sargon of Gobir accepted the wish of Dan Fodio and proposed his young grandson Younfa to go in the campany of Dan Fodio in other to facilitate his preaching and learn islamic knowledge with him.
Younfa passed 16 years in the campany of Dan Fodio preaching in the Gobir..
Dan Fodio in his preaching emphasis in the unjustice made by hausa kings and their lack of applying islamic Sharia in their lands.
This preaching gained for him many followers accross hausaland..
After the death of Bawa Jan Gorzo, BUNU NAPATA father of Younfa Younfa succeded on the throne but didn"t last for long.
When Dan Fodio heard the death of Napata, he urged to Alkalawa with many of his followers to propose Younfa, son of Napata as the ultimate successor.
The problem of Younfa as King was that he didn"t free the King of Zamfara (a hausa king) who was detained on custody for years following his defeat face to Gobir.
The big problem arose when Abdusalami Bagimbine, a learned hausa islamic teacher and preacher was chased away by Sarkin Kabi and settled near Deguel, the paternal village of Usman Dan Fodio...
Sarki Younfa asked Abdusalami to come and settle in his Capital Alkalawa if not he would bring him by force..
Abdusalami refused and Younfa sent his soldiers and tied Abdusalami and his followers...
When passing through Deguel, Dan Fodio untied them and told Younfa soldiers that a good muslim didn't deserve this unhuman treatment..
This was the beginning of the conflict..
The army of Dan Fodio was composed of Hausas ,fulanis, nupes, Tuareds, Zarma islamic scholars, and peasants and herders who were tired of taxes imposed by Hausas kings...
After conquest of important Kingdoms, and as Usman placed at every conquest a man of his neighboring, his friend and principal cause of the "Reform" Abdusalami Bagimbine sent him a letter in which he explained his unpleased behavior regarding the unfair partition of conquered territory. Following that, Abdusalami was pursued and killed...
Usman departed himself from the help of Tuaregs saying that they were there only for looting.

What is this man saying 😭😭😭. A nomadic tribe? Hausa is different from Fulani. Those structures were made by Hausa not Fulani. Fulani doesn't have a permanent home neither do they have a permanent house. Fulani in Nigeria assimilated into Hausa culture not the other way round and they don't speaks fulani language they speak hausa language. Hausa has already established a different states before the fulani came and they were Muslim but not all. The fulani conquered and unify the different states of hausa and toke over the govt but not the culture, structures and way of life and language. In Nigeria still today the pure Hausas are farmers not nomadic. If you want to know more about the history of a group of people ask the natives of the land and not google.

Nice! Make one about Sudano-Sahelian Architecture (Mali) and how Islamic Architecture influenced it. And vice-versa. Hausa is more from Nigeria, Niger. When Mali florished already under Islam Influence Mansa Musa commisioned several Architects. One of those was Abu Ishaq Al-Sahili a Architect from Granada (Spain) that had travelled with him from Mecca to build Mosques. The Gao Mosque was built of burnt bricks, which had not, until then, been used as a material for building in West Africa. Under Mansa Musa Timbuktu grew to be a very important commercial city having caravan connections with Egypt and with all important trade centers in North Africa. Side by side with the encouragement of trade and commerce, learning abd the arts received royal patronage. Scholars who were mainly interest in history, qur'anic thology and law were to make the mosque of Sankore in Timbuktu a teaching centre and to lay the foundations of the University of Sankore.

@@Hausa-Fulani I am aware of that.
You have had Fulani presidents in Nigeria, with Buhari as a prime example.
The person who made this video is from the US, and I'm not sure if he's ever been to the places that he covers in his videos. Just as I have never been outside of Lagos when I've been to Nigeria.
Based on the historical time period that he covers in his video, this is how I formulated my comment.
My understanding is that it was the housa that built the cities, and the Fulani moved into them after they conquered the original inhabitants.
I also understand that housa and Fulani have married into each others families, and demographics change due to natural migration.
I am well aware of my lack of understanding, and am always open to greater understanding.

Please, Hausa and Fulani are two distinct and separate groups. The Fulani are ancestrally nomads from central Africa and settled in and all over West Africa via invasion. The Hausas are indigenous West Africans and the culture and language in Northen Nigeria attributed to the Fulani, or as "Fulani-Hausa" or "Hausa-Fulani", belongs to the Hausas. 100% Hausa. Please do not credit Hausa history and culture as Fulani, the Hausa are by far the most degraded ethnic groups in West Africa, enslaved in their own land in Northern Nigeria by the Fulani.

There is no mistake in The Quran but there is many mistakes in the Bible that the Quran mentions correctly such as the position in society of the leader at the time of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) peace be upon him. The Quran mentions he was a king and the Bible mentions he was a pharaoh. Yusuf was a vizier of Egypt while there also was the king that I mentioned. The Quran is correct and more recently the Rosetta Stone was decoded and what was found is that leader was a king and not a pharaoh. Islam is The true religion with undeniable proof and evidence. We Muslims believe in Jesus but not as God and we don’t believe God has a son. Jesus peace be upon him is a prophet and Messenger Of Allah (God) and he is the messiah. He wasn’t killed as Allah saved him before they could get to him. There is also scientific and historical miracles mentioned in the Quran such as the formation of the human embryo as well as the creation of honey in bees. There are Islamic prophecies that came true and will come true and I recommend everyone to try and learn about them. I myself know of people who were ill and suffering with issues (including black magic) and got cured miraculously when the Quran was recited over them. I invite everyone to learn about Islam.

My personal opinion as a hausa fulani
    1) Hausa is not a tribe of people, it’s a culture and language of the people living in Beladel Sudan or Takrur then and southern Niger and Northern Nigeria now.
    2) the official religion in hausa land before the establishment of Sokoto caliphate was Islam and the hausa kings were Muslims.
The 2nd class citizens were maguzawa or spiritualists which were minorities in different regions of hausa land.
    3) Sokoto caliphate was not a fulani empire it’s an Islamic empire, the British label it as a fulani empire for their political objectives the way the white man lebel racism for you guys in America.
    4) Usman fodio was born and brought up in hausa land by Fulani parents, his scholars and teachers were hausawa, toureg, fulani which all of them were from hausa land he never studied in the hand of any Arab scholar directly.
Bahushe is a term given to any person who his root is not known in hausa land.

We are proud of our Islamic faith, and if you understand the Fulani mentality u will know that nobody can force us to do anything we not cowards, and we are rebellious by nature, we fight for what we believe in. Our ancestors happily embraced Islam by choice because they were nomads and interacted with the nomadic North Africans like the Tuaregs who will preach the message to the Fulanis and then they accepted Islam in the end. We have a rich history from Egypt, East Africa, to North Africa even dating back to the Middle East n this is evident in our physics, genetics culture, music, and even our language. No! Bornuans and Hausa were the 1st to be converted to Islam till the time of the Caliphe Omar.
It was said in the book of Malam Shehua and Sutherland that Mai Duniyama, King of Bornu had heard about this religion and sent an envoy to the Caliph.
Umurwasi was sent and taught people the Quran. After Bornu people of Kano and then Katsina sought the same islamic knowledge.
People then started to ask him about eating animal with claws such as lion, leopard etc.. face to these questions Umurwasi promissed them that when he would be back to Mecca, he would ask about these questions....
