"They're cheap, and they get good mileage" exactly 😅. Perfect when you just need a cheap diesel truck. Paying cash for one of these is way better than taking a loan on a more desirable engine.

I’ve been playing with diesels for a very long time, both as a hobby and to put food on the table. Out of all of them the 6.2 and 6.5 are by far the simplest and most robust of them all. No they aren’t perfect none of them are. The 6.9’s have soft crankshafts, the 12V have the killer dowel pin, these have their quirks too but they make ok power, they are reliable, and they get pretty good fuel economy. Not everyone is a competitor in the Diesel Power Challenge like Mikey down the road thinks he’s is now that he has a programmer and an exhaust with a 30” tip

It’s kinda funny to me that my dad has a 1997 Dodge 2500 12 valve Cummins and he loves it. But, he used to have a 1987 Chevy Blazer with the 6.2 diesel and every time we would get to talking trucks, he was always kicking himself in the rear for getting rid of that truck. He missed it so much that he is in the process of building a 1988 Blazer with the 6.2 right now.

You've earned a subscriber. I first delved into diesels when I was less knowledgeable about them and bought a beat to shit 83' GMC K2500 6.2 diesel 4 speed with 201,000. Damn good truck. Then I bought an LB7(junk), 6.0( obvious, and a 24 valve and believe it or not, it was the biggest turd. Decided to go back to what I knew and found a mint 98' Chevrolet K3500 6.5 Detroit/ 4L80e with 113,000 miles in Kentucky. Been building it ever since with Fluidamper Harmonic balancer/ leroy diesel one-piece crankshaft pulley, wicked wheel II(on the GM-8), vacuum pump delete/ Mechanical waste gate set at 10psi, Airdog fuel preparator lift pump, 4'' exhaust with 2.5'' crossover and some other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. Great motors and I love talking to people about it. I have personally heard two local mechanic say it is a 5.7 olds gas block converted to diesel and how they're garbage. The 5.7L Oldsmobile was far worse than the 8.2L,6.2L,and 6.5L.The real problem about the 8.2L,and then the 6.2L-6.5L was just their low torque. As for the Duramax, the LLY and LBZ seem somewhat ok I guess...But the LB7 is junk, espiecally the Non-lubricated fuel filters. For the Navistar 6.0L,the ones from 2003-2004 had many issues than what the 2005-2007 6.0L had, they even had to sell them as crate engines once with all the errors repaired. The 6.4L was far worse than that, and that is what caused the downfall between Ford and Navistar, and all those lawsuits. The 7.3L and 6.7L,which the 6.7L is actually built by Ford, seem to be their best Powerstrokes.

In all honesty they are all pretty decent across the board. For mechanical injection pump trucks I'd say alot of people look for the 1993 model year, for a few different reasons but in all honesty you cant go wrong with any of the mechanical pump trucks.

The 6.5L in the HMMWV made 200 HP/390 TQ for the M1025-M1046 and M1113-M1167 HMMWV/ECV.The M1025-M1046 has the N/A 6.5L and the M1113-M1167 has the T/C 6.5L.The M998 had the N/A 6.2L.Even after G.M. introduced the Duramax, they sold rights to AM General and the 6.5L was still in production strictly for the Military only. And then there is the P400 and 6500 which both are based on the same engine, but still different. For awhile now, there has been the Oshkosh JLTV which has the 6.6L LBZ,but it will replace the HMMWV in combat for the most part, they will still use them in other units and behind the action. The HMMWV will not retire until 2042,that will make the HMMWV itself almost 60 years old since it debuted in 1983,and will make the 6.5L almost 50 years old since it came out in 1991.
The 6.5L was also used in the CUCV ll and was turbocharged as well.Same way with the 6.2L in the CUCV D10-D30 M1008-M1031.Before Chevrolet built any of those trucks, there also was a Dodge M880-M886 CUCV which was a gas truck with the 318 V8 and is very rare too.But there is the LSSV,which all use the Duramax and are still in service, but the CUCV is basically retired.
These engines during their prime were the lowest in torque compared to Navistar and Cummins, but they had incredible fuel efficiency for such a large engine after all.Even in today's technology, they are on the same tier of fuel economy,or are just about there. The 6.5L almost had the same amount of torque as the 12V 6BT for 1984-1995 anyway, there wasn't a big difference for 160 HP/400 TQ.They can get to work, that is why there is gear ratio, but just don't expect these to get any high speed like many other trucks.
The most common problems on both the 6.2L-6.5L was mostly the fuel filters, injection pump, and harmonic balancers espiecally.Anything else like cracking heads was due to age.
The 8.2L was another great engine, came before the other two,and was used in the C50-C70 starting in 1980 after they had a 2 Stroke 4-53 for 1978-1982,and it just came out around the time when G.M. went with the Topkick-Kodiak name. The others as far back as 1973 were all gas trucks with a 292,350,366,427,and 454.Some of them even had a 3-71,which wasn't as common. And then after the 8.2L,they also came with Caterpillars and Cummins.
