PG17 is Oxide of Chromium, so no wonder it doesn't look like Hookers green! :) Thank you for the review. MaimeriBlu is a favorite brand of mine. I was very happy with the primary colours, -but I also do not use bright orange much. :)

I started my watercolour journey with 3 tubes of maimeri blue and made a whole pallete full of colours, 2years later I am still using that pallete, I’ve always loved it! I have bought other brands, some I like and some I hate, thank you for your great reviews it helps us all when choosing our paints😊

Hi Teoh! I've started painting with watercolour a few months ago, and have been using Maimeriblu as its far cheaper than many other brands here in Aus, and because the name sounds so pretty! Initially I tried them on a hot press paper, and was also somewhat disappointed, but after trying on various other papers I am loving the results. I can definitely agree that the paper has a big impact! Really looking forward to seeing some more of these colours used in your videos!
As a side note, I am curious if anyone has tried setting Maimeriblu into pans for a travel set? I had assumed they'd set fine, but my colours all remain a bit sticky on my ceramic palette .... I'm a bit anxious to fill pans incase I make a terrible mess!

Thanks for the video. I think that when you choose a brand of watercolors you also have to think about the type of works we paint. So also that the impact they have the characteristics of the watercolors we use. For example, I love botanicals, views, fog, twilight, rain. I use many layers of glazes, the transparency of the layers that I can obtain with Maimeriblu is perfect for my works. They give it a hushed elegance. If I did urban sketch I would like to focus on Daniel Smith or Winsor Newton professional.

Thanks for this review, Teoh, it's very helpful. I have owned a 24 half pan set of Maimeri for about 30 years (before they added the word Blue)! I didn't really start using them until several years ago when I taught myself to paint - they were my first experience with watercolors and I fell in love! The colors are really vibrant and they flow nicely. Now they are starting to run out and I need to replace some colors; I am sure they are no longer the same as what I have, so I have been shopping around. Cerulean was the first to go - it was my favorite, and being on a budget, I purchased a lower grade of paint. I was very disappointed with what I bought - it was really muddy. I've since learned that having the same name doesn't mean it's the same pigment! Now I am carefully paying attention to pigments and quality. Thanks for helping me learn!

I learned about Maimeriblu watercolors from Sterling Edwards. Check out his paintings and you'll see a luminosity that is unmatched!! So beautiful! Thank you for reviewing these. If you are in the market for more colors, I recommend Still de Grain Brown, Avigon Orange, and Garnet Lake. My favs!

As an aside--Maimeriblu tubes are my favorite tubes for easy opening and pigment not shooting out of the tube and getting wasted. This may seem like a non-issue--UNLESS you have carpal tunnel or arthritis or other hand issues. These tubes have easy to open lids that don't get stuck and wide mouth tube openings that help the pigment not squirt out of the tube as soon as you open it. MMB version of PV19 is my absolute favorite PV19 :) Thanks for showing this brand, it doesn't get much screen time for some reason...

PG17 is chromium oxide green and it is a very dull colour. I use mine as light first washes and very rarely mix them because it tends to muddy up colours really fast. That being said, they're great for washes in animal paintings, especially dinosaurs. On another note, I have one tube of Maimeri, their equivalent of Dioxazine Violet, and I love it so much. Very bright and intense.

I really enjoyed watching the way the color flowed in your gradation strips. MMB raw umber is the closest color to the sandy soil in my area so it's one of my favorites. Another pretty brown is Dragons Blood but you could probably mix it with raw umber & rose or alizarin crimson.

I did a stupid thing a posted this comment on your old video about Maimeriblu lol. 🤦‍♂️
If anyone's interested he was using the Bee Paper 100% cotton watercolor journal and Kunst and Papier watercolor sketchbook with 35% cotton paper. I forgot that you'd gotten an introductory set. That being the case the you surely got the lower quality product. If you believe that it was really the paper that killed the colors then I'd like to see you paint a sketch on a sheet of the highest quality watercolor paper you have with your color mixes planned out before hand on a scrap piece of paper. Then perhaps the watercolor can point its metaphorical finger at the 👉 previously used paper. Until then I'm about 50% convinced. 😉
Still it's always fun to watch you paint and swatch. Plus I always learn things from you. Thanks Teoh. 😃

I bought a Maimeri Blu dot card and the dots were on this slick paper. The colors did not look their best on this crappy shiny paper, but there was enough of some of the dots to paint them on a separate piece of watercolor paper and they looked pretty good. I ordered three tubes. Too bad about the dot cards.

    • @teohyc

Get the paint that's easier or cheaper for you to replace in the future. Quality from the well known companies is good and sometimes difficult to differentiate.

    • @juliebongers
      @juliebongers Рік тому

Daniel Smith's colors are densely saturated and so will give you a very bright palette. However, they are harder than other watercolors to re-hydrate once they've dried on your palette. One tiny warning, if you use Titanium white (probably of any brand, my experience was with DS), don't purchase it until you've removed the lid to be certain that the pigment and gum arabic haven't separated. I prefer titanium white watercolor to gouache, but few watercolorists use white watercolor, so those tubes tend to sit on store shelves a long time) . I've never used M Graham so can't compare them.

Thank you so much Teoh! This brand is quite affordable here ( Australia; in big tubes much cheaper than DS) but I've been hesitant. May I ask, how does the cerulean blue compare with other brands colour wise & transparency ? And Is it less granulating than some other cerulean blue brands you own ? ( I am looking for a cerulean that doesn't granulate as much as some )? Thank you again!

    • @TobermoryCat

@Sarra'sWatercolorJourney Likely White Nights is not as high quality but never having used them I cannot be sure. Look up the ingredients - see if they actually use Cerulean PB 35 ...or thalo PB15? A good Cerulean will normally granulate. Cerulean is a colour that can be mixed - but the mixed colour will not behave like Cerulean. I have Cerulean made by 7 different companies - each of them differ, not so much for the colour but the way they handle.
