    I applaud your ability to DNF books so often!! I need to get better about that 😆 And that’s too bad about Everyone on This Train is a Suspect, I want to read it soon so we’ll see what I think!

      Thank you so much! Dnf'ing has really made me keep this hobby fun which is so important!! YES I am so interested what you will think about Everyone on This Train is a Suspect! I have been seeing a lot of positive reviews from others but just didnt quite hit the same for me! 😅

      @@mikalareads yes it definitely helps with staying out of a slump and not feeling like you’re wasting your time! I don’t know why I usually feel obligated to fully commit to books… 😆 And yeah that’s totally valid! That’s why books are so great, everyone has such different experiences and opinions! ❤️

    oh no! I have Ravenfall on my shelf. I've been embracing the DNF more this year than in the past

      Yesss I remember watching a vlog when you got Ravenfall!!! I really had such high expectations but it really ended up letting me down!😣😬 ME TOO - I love that we all are feeling more comfortable to DNF more!!

    So glad you're DNFing more! I think I've said that a lot, but it's really motivating. Haha.
    7:57 - You've gone from being a frustrated reader to thinking like a writer! 😂 That is very common writing advice. People say "said is dead". It's not _really_ but it really bogs down the pace if an author puts "said" after every string of dialogue. ESPECIALLY if it's a back and forth conversation.
    Anyway, I need to be more like you are start shooting down 3-star books much faster than I do. There's so much hope with 3-star reads that they're tough to give up on sometimes. 😅

    LOVE the decisive strikes given to anything you think is mediocre! I usually give the books I'm iffy on a bit longer, but you inspired my to DNF a book at 8%. I KNOW myself and I know it was NOT gonna be more than a 1-2 star. I appreciate your inspiration and your continued lovely videos!

      AWW thank you for this comment, I really appreciate your kind words!!! I LOVE that you were able to DNF the book you were reading at 8%, especially when you could tell it was only going to be at most a 1-2 star!!! I feel like since I have started embracing DNF'ing I have really prevented myself from falling into any major reading slumps because I find myself only really reading books I enjoy! 🙌💗🙏

    I’m glad you at least gave Ravenfall a try! I admittedly don’t care for the authors writing (I think it’s adults like me reading these books, not kids) but I enjoy reading about a little Jewish girl who loves Halloween, and there’s some good atmosphere around the halfway point. But I have fully DNF’d other YA books by this author.
    I’ve been DNFing a lot too but I still need to be careful with it. If you read 40 pages of enough books, you’re still eventually reading a whole book’s worth of pages without the feeling of finishing something.

    Okay, Goblin Mode sounds awesome for me, will have to see if I can find a copy at my library. Good for you for DNFing the mediocrity out of your shelves. I think I hate those 3 stars more than my 2 stars, at least with those I feel something!

      I am so excited for you to check out Goblin Mode!!! I agree totally agree with that about three star books, like you said at least with lower rated ones theres SOME-what of an impact lol!! 😅

    I am also going through a non-fiction phase! I don’t know what changed, but it’s been so hard for me to find fiction this year that really hits. It’s such a shame about Pathogenesis because it sounds really good from the title. Goblin Mode was actually recommended to me recently so it’s a shame that it fell flat for you as an audiobook. I love sewing, but I can only imagine how boring it would be to sit through a sewing tutorial with no visuals.

      @mikalareads  3 місяці тому +1

      OMG wowwww Ally what you said about Nonfiction resonates with me so much, this is exactly how I am feeling currently! Like for some reason I am just struggling to get into fiction this year! Ya know I think Goblin Mode could actually still be really worth the read if you are intrigued by it! I was very interested in the beginning of it, so I can see why a lot of people would get joy from it!!

    Some of my more recent DNFs in February were Cackle and the Romantic Agenda - absolutely no regrets as stopping those meant I got to read so many other great reads in February and March 👍

      AH I am so sad to hear you did not like Cackle but that is MORE than fair and also props to you for DNF'ing when you realized that it wasn't doing much for you!!! I agree Dnf'ing opens up so much more space to read books that could be amazing which is so lovely and keeps reading fun!!!💗💯👏

      I definitely think you would enjoy Small Spaces!! I read it in a single sitting and it had me hooked! Ya know what maybe still check out Ravenfall if you are drawn to it, because I have seen others enjoying it more!! I think maybe too if I had read it at another time it may have worked more for me but at this time I just really wasn't loving it!

    I need to take a leaf out of your book... this is inspiring! I do dnf but I have been forcing myself to get at least 100 pages read before dnf'ing and this can be torture... I am definitely re thinking the way I dnf.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  2 місяці тому +1

      Honestly I do also love that you have the goal to make it 100 pages before you DNF, because sometimes I do wonder if I am quitting a book too soon and it really does improve!!! I think the more I started giving myself permission to stop reading a book I wasn't enjoying the easier it got, and the more cut-throat I became with the process hahah!

    also i laugh at the title goblin mode im surprised they didn't have an appendix or glossary so you could see where the segments ends so you can skip them

      Yesss, the title made me giggle when I first seen it as well!! Yes thats a good point about the segments! I know sometimes my audiobooks do include them and but I dont think I even checked for this book I just returned it as my attention started to wane 😅

    I felt the exact same way about Pathogenesis. Went in wanting details about 8 plagues... And 50% in that still wasn't happening. The Great Mortality by John Kelly was one I enjoyed about the black death. You might find it more interesting!

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  3 місяці тому

      AHH I am so validated to hear I wasn't alone in feeling this way about Pathogenesis! Also since I dnf'd around only 25% I am glad to know as well that it didn't really improve anymore by the 50% point!!! Thank you for recommending The Great Mortality by John Kelly I am adding to my tbr now to check it out!! 💯🙏

    Oh wow. I've read Small Spaces by Katherine Arden as well. My 11yo daughter and I read it together. I think I enjoyed it more than she did.😊 Have you had a chance to check out Arden's book The Warm Hands of Ghosts? It's for more older readers than Small Spaces.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  3 місяці тому +1

      I totally agree!!! I used to really feel like I was wasting time if I didnt finish every book I started (because I had already invested time in it lol...), but now I see that was such backwards thinking and it's a bigger waste of time to continue!!!
