  • NOTE: The backlight noise only affected the first version of the meter released. It only affected about 10% of Version 1, Brymen changed the hardware with some updates that corrected this issue.
    So I normally don't do multi meter reviews, but this one was different.
    First, its by first Brymen and I have had to listen to a friend for months tell me how good they are.
    Second, its a re-branded meter, with the EEVBlog logo.So I just had to do a review throw every test i was capable of doing and had the equipment to do at it.So I did, Enjoy.......

    NOTE: I know this is a long review, but it had a lot of features to cover for such a small CAT IV rated meter. I kept it as short as possible. I tested everything including mV, mA, uA and all except diodes, somehow I over looked that.

    NOTE: Please keep in mind this is an old video when the meter was first released. It’s has had some hardware revision changes for the better and firmware updates.

    I purchased the 235 as a gift for my fathers birthday. It has all the fuction he needs and is not overly expensive.
    As a bonus it has nice accuracy.. I think he will be very pleased with it. This review and the one Dave from EEV did helped a lot! thanks for your time reviewing it

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Don't worry about the back light noise, they fixed this shortly after two of us painted it out during our reviews.
      I'll share something new with you from last nights experaments.
      I was recently looking into the burden voltage on different DMM's and found this one to be a little high when measuring current in the mA range. It claims it will measure up to 600mA in this range, but the burden voltage is to high for some applications when it's above 500mA.
      It was higher then my flukes and another Agilent Percision shunt. But the resolution is good enough to use the AMP range and still accurate with much less burden voltage. So depending on how much current you are measuring I would recommend using the AMP range if 'it's above 100mA. At the high end of the mA range around 500 to 600mA it dropped 1.3 Volts DC. At 100mA in mA range it was a low burden drop about 0.25VDC. So if your measuring current above 100mA just use the AMP range instead, it was still very accurate within +/- 2ma using the AMP range, and only dropped 0.13VDC, and not 1.35VDC.
      Maybe for current lower then 100mA or 50mA then use the mA range, it will be more accurate with only a little burnden voltage drop.
      This is nothing new with DMM, even my $500 fluke 289 has burden voltage. Not as much for measuring 500mA in the mA range, but all DMM have some. Just some meters handle it better then others. Using the AMP range for 500mA was good because it was still accurate +/- 2mA
      I just thought I would mention it so you know. I just happened to notice it when I was working on something that was powered by a 500mA USB port. If I have time maybe I will do a small video on this, and I will try to make this part of any future meter testing. But usually meter are not my thing for testing, enough other people do meter testing also. I think this one impressed me for the size and value for dollar so I decided to review it.

    Thanks for the video. I'm an electrician that just graduated and is starting to get into both the construction and industrial industry. I was browsing around for a good bang for your buck meter that is more reliable that the cheapy rebadged stuff you get from the big box stores and this one along with the Fluke 117 caught my eye.

      I think the brymen would hold up just as good as the fluke 117. Isn't the fluke 117 the ones with a smaller warranty, three years or one year?
      But if you were to put it up against the fluke 87V with a 10 minumim warenty from the date purchased and proven to take a beating, I would probably go that way or some other fluke industrial meter. I'm not saying the brymen isn't good, but if your going to be doing this for a living I think you would get more bang for your buck with a fluke industrial meter and longer warranty. And better turn around time if you did need to send it out for service. After all for your job you will be counting on this every day. I think it's one of the reasons you always see an electrician and a mechanic with a fluke, they are proven in industrial jobs. Just my thoughts.

    Great review! 235 is my go to multimeter. The only thing I miss is an Autohold function........ but even without I see no reason to upgrade to a Fluke.

    I have had the brymen for a while now and love it but want to get some more probes for it. Specifically some probemaster probes. I believe they are the same as the fluke probes size wise, can you verify whether or not the fluke probes fit the brymen? Thanks!

      Well to save money I went with an updated Korad refurbished triple linear power supply from SRA-Solder. I figured since it was refurbished then it probably had the redesigned boards unlike the first version that has some issues and saved money. The refurbished one did have the updated boards as I thought it would. You can look at their refurbished products:

      In the example of the Korad KA3005D it can be a $50 savings. Mine is the
      It hasn't let me down yet and doesn't break the bank, and the display for amperage is closer then I expected for a power supply in this price range when I checked it against mt Fluke and HP 34401A. I wanted something that could do 10A for testing 3D printer heat beds, so you may not need the triple, maybe the single 3A or 5A would be more of a for depending on your needs and it takes less space.

    Thanks for this great in-depth video! Are you still feeling as positive about this meter as when you shot the video? I’m trying to decide between the BM235…or if I should just bite the bullet and get a BM869s. However your joy instilled quite a bit of confidence in me about this meter haha.

      This meter is still going hard and working great. I probably have about 14 meters and usually grab the Brymen or the fluke if I need logging. If I didn't have so many already I would also probably buy a BM869s.

    I have a BRYMEN 257 and it does not measure the ohmmeter, only megaohms, very high scales, but normally when measuring, the scale of the display flashes.
    When I turn it on I get C_ER and without a scheme I'm lost
    Do you have any idea what it can be?

      The 257 is in a different scale on how it take measument then the 235. I did a search and came up with this from the 257s manual.
      Calibration
      Periodic calibration at intervals of one year is recommended to maintain meter accuracy. Accuracy
      is specified for a period of one year after calibration. If self-diagnostic message “C_Er” is being
      displayed while powering on, some meter ranges might be largely out of specifications. To avoid
      mis-leading measurements, stop using the meter and send it for re-calibration.
      It’s doesn’t seem to be a common issue, but looks like it does a self check on boot up and has happened to a few others in the past. If something doesn’t match with the stored calibration data you will get the C_er for calibration error.
      This could be from the lithium battery being low, or did it die and you replaced it? Or internal corrosion causing a short, was the meter ever wet, even it it was a year ago. Corrosion happens over a long time, so you may need to think back.
      Is this a new meter? If not, how old is it? I don’t know the warranty period so you may need to check the manual.
      Brymen is also good at replying to emails with support, you can email them and see if they can help further.

    I have a new brymen 235. I measured the resistance of the resistance of a Microwave megnetron to be .2 ohms then quickly goes to zero. I was expecting a consistent measurement of .8 ohms so when the reading went to zero i thought the part was bad. The new part measures the same. Now I'm not sure if the meter can handle a low ohm measurement.

      Im not sure what the claimed specs are for this range? The manuals I just checked starts off at 600.0 Ohms to 6k Ohms with 0.3% +3 digits. But it does not mention the tolerance for under 600 ohms.
      So I decided to run some tests on mine for a comparison to yours. That said, I never measured a megatron before, or what the megatron is made of and if the resistance changes when voltage and a low 2uA current is passed through it.
      I just tried a few resistors in the low range. I have the original probes it came with and removed the banana adapters. Since it averages the readings and auto zeros out in resistance modes I usually hold the probes together for a few seconds first. It’s a little slow reading lower resistance, so I held it for a few seconds, maybe 5 to 8 seconds to let it average. I know the update rate is 5 readings a second, I assume that’s the same for all modes on the meter.
      Mine is running the original released production firmware “C”, you can check this with holding down the “Hold” button and turning it on. It will display the firmware version.
      This was my results:
      0.1 ohm = 0.1 it flickered to 0 once then came back and held it.
      0.5 did ok at 0.5
      0.75 showed 0.8 , probably rounded up since it doesn’t have the resolution to show that last digit.
      0.85 measured at 0.9, also rounded up.
      1 ohm was 1 ohm Note: I measured the same resistor in the video.
      And 1.2 ohm was 1.2 ohm.
      It’s beeen over a year, when I did the video and then my 1 ohm was 0.99, so looks like it drifted but in the correct direction
      The resistance of the Brymen probes measured with my 4 wire miliohm meter was 028.8mOhms and 024.7mOhm. So the probes are about 25% of the lowest reading it can display with 100mOhm. Maybe this is how it knows to zero it our or what to ignore. Then again the probes have such a low resistance it wouldn’t show up on a meter with this resolution anyway. I would think cheaper probes with a higher resistance might confuse the meter auto zero feature and give bad reading with lower ranges like in the mili Ohms.
      We’re you using the original probes?
      Maybe test the probes with another meter that can read a higher resolution to ensure one doesn’t have a beak in the wire.
      If you have the banana adapter on you need to make sure they are screwed on all the way, and if you measure with the banana part it takes a little more pressure since the one part on the adapter spins. This is why I just remove them most of the time.
      If you still notice low readings you can always email Brymen and see what they suggest or say.

    Just wondering: Is the date 11/02? That's not "November second"... In most parts of the world including Australia, that means the eleventh of February. Would that make more sense/align with the date you placed the order? The year I can't explain.

    Hi GRV. Can I ask how life with the BM235 is going 6 months on? How is the quality holding up? Are you still happy and using it as a "go to"?

      Hi, yes the BM235 is still going strong. It get more use then others, but each meter has its own strong points. I would say the BM235 replaced the garage and on the go meter for its size. The fluke has its strong points with other features, and o can take the bench meter with me to help a friend with w car that won't start. So it takes the most outdoor weather beatings more then any of the 6 portable meters I own. The variable drive frequency feature came in handy once, troubleshooting an AC motor and I never thought I would have needed that feature.
      For basic lab and house use its works good. I still have to take another if I need PWM or when building led flashlights. If it had the PWM it would probably be the main meter. As for being my first Brymen I've been very pleased with the durability and accuracy.

    Drat, watched what I could to see you test the milliamps, you went from microamps to amps. I need a new MM that can get to 600 miliamps to bias the mosfets in an RF amp. Decent video though. I've added this MM to my list now. Thanks.

      I can’t believe I missed that. Maybe I was showing low and high range, usually if that’s accurate so it the middle range. The data sheet for this meter sates it will do up to 600mA AC @ 1.0% accuracy and 600mA DC @ 0.7%.accuracy, both +3D with 1.9mV/mA burden voltage. Most DMM’s will ready slightly higher then spaced allows the user to tune something at the top range before it shows over limit.
      I did a short and fast test for you, just leave a comment once you watched the video and I’ll remove it. I hope this helps.

      No problem, I found another video that walked current up from about 400ma to a 10A and it gave me the resolution I needed. Mine arrives tomorrow. Also, the mA port is rated to 600maA which is all I need.

    Hi Gadget Review Videos. Nice video, thank you for making it. Question (don't know who else to ask, kindly, please). ¿In the Diode Test mode, does this Bryman/EEVBlog 235 DMM light up an LED, in particular, the White & Blue (requiring higher voltage [~2.5 to 2.6Vdc]), AND, display their voltage on screen (when in Diode test mode) please? I know it's particular, but I'm trying to replace a certain Radio Shack DMM that fails to power up when ambient temps are ~77ºF & above/~55% RH & up. Said Radio Shack meter does light up said diodes, dimly, but does do so, and displays their voltage when doing so, ~2.6V DC or thereabouts). I use this feature and would like the DMM unit I purchase to have similar characteristic. (Don't want to get the wrong DMM). Any help/suggestions much appreciated. Thank you much. tonyd\.

      Both are great meters. I would go with the Brymen (eevblog) 235 for features/functionality included with the price. But the fluke has a good build quality, although the BM325 also holds weight. I guess it comes down to the little differences is specs and how you plan to use the meter. Get the one that will best suit you, both are good choices.

    Thanks for the video. I was thinking about doing ardiuno projects, would this be a good meter for that. I would like to just have one good meter, and if I really get into doing more things with ardiuno then maybe getting more if needed.

      That depends, this is a good meter but is missing one feature you might want to understanding some ardiuno projects. But when you say arduino projects that is a lot of stuff you can do with an arduino. I would suggest looking up PWN (pulse width modulation) and get an understanding of PWM and how it might be used with some ardiono projects. The only ones I can think of would be LEDs as for flashing or controlling the brightness, and motor related projects for the speed of the motor. This is something you may want to have a meter that does PWM. Other wise this does everything else really good and is great for measuring low currents in the uA and mA range.
      Once you understand PWM you can decide if this would be the meter for you or not. Some people don't need or use it. It's mostly used in mechanics more then anything. So you may be ok without it, or you might want this feature. Maybe join and ardiono board and ask others if they use this a lot with their projects and if it's something you will need?
      This is a brymen meter, and other brymen meters also have PWM features and everything this has for about the same cost. They are a little bigger and the one thing I like about this one is the small size. But if I was looking for just one meter I would want to get as much features as possible even if it meant the meter was a little bigger. Maybe a different brymen would be better.
      On the other hand you will realize you will probably want more then one meter eventually. The other meters don't have to be expensive ones, just to measure voltage and just about any meter these days can measure D.C. voltage pretty accurately.

      Thanks for the info. I have an understanding of PWM it is used in PC to control fan speed, and it can be used to dim leds and probable more.
      I will look into other brymen meters and try the ardiuno boards.
      I am not looking to build anything just to learn some programing and electronics. I have time on my hands and the price to get into this as a hobby is not to expensive, so just looking to see what I would need to get started.

      I forgot about this one, it's the same size and accuracy but includes PWM. Plus the price is about the same since this is free shipping and I think the eevblog one was about the same after shipping. It has an optional data logging ability with the data logging kit you could buy later if you decided this is something you would want. The seller is one of the most trusted sellers also, even Dave on eevblog did an interview with him.

      Thanks for the info. From my current look into doing this I am going to get a less expensive DMM to start with and see if I like doing these projects and see what I can learn.       To start with and then if I like this hobby move to something like the BM257.
      I think this was one of the budget DMM from eevblog. This way I can spend a controlled about of money on a new hobby and have a good DMM to start and with it see what I will need in the future.
      I have a cheap $10 DMM no autoranging to use as a second meter can use the EX330 to see how accurate that one is.

      I'm personally not a fan of extech, I've owned two and the both ended up in the trash shortly after the one year warranty ran up.
      I wasn't going to mention this meter since I'm not done the review on it, but if your looking for a good meter and little cheaper to start with I would try this one. It's been accurate with all my testing and for the price it comes with the ability for data logging to USB on your computer. Plus Frankie's shipping has always been faster then anyone else I've ordered from overseas with. I usually get his packages in about a week.
      It's the same resolution as the extech your looking at with more features, accurate and a little cheaper.
      I hope to have the review done in a couple weeks, but I like to test items for at least a month before recommending them and I have used this for a couple weeks now without an issue. For the price and to include data logging it's been impressive.

      +Chingus696 You might have the same power supply I have. Mine just a triple output. It's the KORAD KA3005D-3S - 30V, 5A DC Triple. It's the same as a single KA3005D except it has two 30V-5A rails and a dedicated 5V-3A rail making it a triple. The two 30V-5A can run in series or parallel for a total of 60V or total of 10 Amps. The one other difference is one rail has a chassis ground to earth (green post) on the left side. The two extra post on the right is the 5 volt 3 Amp dedicated separate rail.

    I know this is almost 5 years old now, but did it turn out that the high-pitched whine from the backlight was because the backlight was an EL panel instead of an LED?

      It was a ceramic capacitor that made the noise as I confirmed in this video. ua-cam.com/video/TfNuTmqtiD4/v-deo.html. Since then the manufacturer Brymen changed the supplier for that capacitor and fixed this a few months after this review.

      UA-cam isn't full time, it just when I can't sleep LoL. I'm technically, hmm? Let's put it this way, the company treats me as a retired engineer but from health issues I can't work anymore doing 50/60+ hours a week. But I was a full time engineer, and part time consultant for other tech companies in the past when I lived in the Silicon Valley for 18 years.

    Just an observation, I thought multimeter manufacturers wanted/planned for you to wrap the leads longways around the meter when using the probe holders? For example, the brymen 859s has little rubber clips built into the rubber boot to assist in keeping the wrapped leads in place. My other meters work out well doing the same thing. This is what I've always done. (Flukes, Agilent, Brymen, Hioki,...). I just thought I'd let you know as it seems the intended way. Also, no problem with your meters sitting crooked or your probes coming out. To each his own though, however you prefer. Cheers!

      I think I saw that with my fluke 289, but I usually fold out the stand first and wrap them the other directions so I can stand the meters up on the bench. But whatever works, wrapping leads isn't a wrong or correct way kind of thing I guess. As long as you don't stretch them out with to much tension.

      Thanks for the info.. I have 3) HP 34401A 6.5 digit bench counters in the lab as well as other handheld multimeters made by Fuke. However, there are often times when it's great to have additional meter when I have 3 or 4 projects going at once.. Also the 34401's are not the type meter I would take out of the Lab for field work.. Happy Holidays to you and your family..

      I don't know if you will see this message, UA-cam comments seem to be messing up again. You seem to have the same same main meters I also have. I have a ho 34401A and a Fluke 289. The brown southwire I gave away and I keep some cheap one around for DC voltage reading only. But my top three are the Hp 34401A, the fluke and this brymen.

      Yes, we have some of the same equipment.. I don't have a Fluke 289 yet but have been interested in that instrument. I have an ole Fluke 77 which is very close to the 34401's, close enough to do most adjustments and checks with a great deal of confidence.
      A good bit of my work is with vintage receivers made originally for the military but now coveted by Ham radio op's and Shortwave listeners. In that work, I often need to peak circuits for performance and I use analog VTVM such as the HP 410C and 410B.. It is much easier to follow a needle moving up or down as opposed to interpreting fluctuating numbers..
      just watched Dave on the EEVBLOG teardown a 7.5 digit Keithley Multimeter which samples 1M x/second.. Yikes..
      I have not posted any youtube videos yet since I am busy with work but at some point, I may get involved with that too..

      To some people maybe. Some don't have a need for the bar-graph, but other might. It's hard to find one meter to meet all needs and wants sometimes. Probably why most people have a couple meters. I personally don't have much need for the bar-graph, it does depend on what you use the meter for. It's still feature rich for the cost and a lot more accurate then most meters in this price range and smaller then most also. I still give it a good bang for the buck rating and find myself using this more then some of my other meters.
      I've even thought about buying one of the bigger Brymen now that cost a little more.

      +Anonymous Nameless Not all of them have it. Not even all the BM235 are as loud as the one I received. I've been told Brymen looking into it and other videos were done explaining it. It's been traced to a single capacitor C44. I just did a fix video that worked also. Or you can replace the cap with a thicker one like a 25V-10uF capacitor.       They made version two that has gaskets arround the extention to remove the little wobble and increase torque control, but it doesn't flick out like the old one.

      Why are you shopping for a 5 year old meter? They have some new ones coming out that have better specs.
      FYI: That $%#@ whole was a desk in my house office with a shoe rack as a shelve. I was in the middle of building out another room with proper benches in my house at the time. This is a hobby in my house, not a profession. Why am I even mentioning this? What ever, don’t believe anything I said in the video from 5 years ago. I really don’t care.
