I know it had to go due to its age, the steepness of the upper deck oranges, sub standard rink size, and seating capacity. All that said, I preferred watching hockey in that building over the Key center. You were more involved in the game. Cheering was not prompted by the scoreboard and PA system, but by the action on the ice.
From the chiseled lettering, this was constructed as the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in 1939-40. Some years later, I think it was renamed as the War Memorial Auditorium.
I don't think so. At the time it was opened, it was dedicated to those who died in the world wars, but 'war" was never part of the name. There was War Memorial Stadium, where the Bills played. I've only ever known it by its proper name or as "The Aud."
What a fantastic look into the past, thanks for taking the time to make this video & great audio,I cant help but think of the Sabres(from the 60's -70's) when ever I hear it,as a WNY native near Chicago I cant get enough of the forgotten Buffalo. Now to the Aud Demolition video
I have a nice chuck of the limestone from the front facade... Many, many great games and concerts!!!!!
