Just put a 512 GB SSD on my i7 w/ 16Gb RAM PC (under Windows 8.1) and it boots now for 15 seconds only! Just before I moved to an SSD my old drive was spinning like forever even after loading up the Windows. Now after a full and fresh installation it is lightning fast - 15 seconds for a cold-start boot-up!
I just installed the Samsung 840 EVO 120GB last night. It is my first SSD and my god where has this thing been all my life. Ran some benchmark tests. My old hard drive had a Sequentail read of 26MB/s and Write at 68MB/s Random Read IOPS 198 and Write at 267. After i installed the SSD my Sequentail Read is now 4311 and Write is 3535. Random read IOPS is 105,800 and Random Write is 65903. Windows 8.1 now boots in less than 10 seconds. :O This is with the rapid mode turned on (It is off by default). It came with cloning software and moving all my OS over to the new drive was super easy. It was well worth the $79 from amazon.
He is NOT Bs'ing when he says "the most single important upgrade"! I went from a WD black 500g to a samsung evo 850 500g and it is night and day. EVERYTHING in much faster, start up,load times for games, surfing the web,etc for the $180 i paid the samsung evo is a no brainer!

I found out my PC is slow because of the harddrive when i opened up Task manager and started opening apps. My CPU was on 15% and my HDD on 100%. With an SSD my 2013 i7 laptop is a beast!! :)
Usually when you have that low CPU usage/high hard drive usage, you will almost always find that your ram usage is also high (like 85% on up). This is because you're maxing out the ram, and so the computer is compensating by writing the excess to the cache file on the hard drive (your ram will always have a "buffer" that will keep it from absolute max of 100%). If you see this, you'll probably still benefit significantly from a RAM upgrade, because RAM is still A LOT faster than the SSD you installed. Once prices drop again after COVID 19, you might want to check that out.

I just updated an old Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 with a Samsung 850EVO 500gb. Used the Samsung migration software and it copied 465gb of data from my old HDD in 1hr 10 mins. Installed the new SSD and zero issues booting up. I went from minutes from boot to being able to use a program to 32 seconds (including time to type in my login credentials) On accounts that don’t require login it takes 12 seconds from power on until I can open Firefox and start searching. Guys don't migrate your data like guy on this video if your system had set IDE mode in BIOS, if u had set AHCI everythings good. Or just change it to AHCI and make clean install other way u will get BSOD. And of course YOUR SSD WILL BE FASTER IN AHCI.
+RaZziaN1 No need for clean install. You get a BSOD because Windows doesn't automatically load the AHCI-Drivers during boot, if your SATA-Controller was running in IDE-Mode before. But you can tell Windows to load the driver with a simple change in the registry: If you want to change from IDE- to AHCI-Mode simply open regedit, go to "Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci", doubleclick on the entry "Start" and change the value to 0. After that reboot into your BIOS and change your SATA-Controller to AHCI-Mode. Your Windows will boot up normally, automatically re-detect your SATA-Controller and drives, reboot again and everything will work just fine ... or even better because AHCI-Mode is faster :)

When I had my 2011 MBP I upgrade to an Samsung SSD. Best upgrade I've ever done. You can open programs like Illustrator and Word instantly. I think this might be the most important upgrade anyone can do for their computer. You can take a computer that's 10 years old and make it like new with this one upgrade.
Better than new!! I've put the SSD drives into all my old and new Laptops and now they are all SUPER FAST!! I had no idea..!! Even my dusty old Netbook is fast....
Nice, that's an awesome deal. I just got the Evo 1TB for my desktop. Its awesome but i had to pay quite a bit for it. Then the price went down a week or two later. Still the performance is awesome. I'll do a review of my new computer as soon as i have time.
I dropped my laptop on the corner of my table and it hit exactly where my hdd is and now my hdd is damaged and im.in need of a new one..can I just buy the ssd and put it into my laptop or do I need a new hhd before installing the ssd?
I just installed the Samsung Evo 860 (250Gb) + 16Gb ram in my Dell Xps L502x (by my self, watching youtube useful vids though)..and I just got a new computer! Temperatures are almost 20 degrees below the former standard!
Depends on whether you have physical space in your computer if it is a notebook. Many notebook computers can substitute the CD/DVD for a hard-drive. For a desktop computer, it is a very normal procedure...
Thanks Jurgen, Yea its hard to give up that kind of space in a laptop especially if you have a lot of media. For me the laptop is mainly used for surfing and office work. Only about 150GB was being used so the 250 made sense. I have a portable 2TB i can plug in if i need more but yea If i was using all my media all the time I wouldn't want to carry the 2TB around. It was like getting a brand new laptop the performance increase is so big.
Depends on the maker but typically Hard drive and Ram replacement does not void the warranty. They are well aware that these are parts that get replaced. But damage due to these parts may not be covered. .
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE DOWN THIS VIDEO. I am getting ready to buy 5 of them and this video i favorited to come back after i buy them. I have a recording studio and i'm upgrading. I'm still saving for the drives. So please don't take this video down. Thanx.
That would be a great addition for an android pc with the fact that it comes with the usb connector. Especially if its usb 3.0. Just my .2. Great vids man. will be ordering a minix or mad catz mojo soon because of your reviews. It will be my everday comp!
Nice video. I have Toshiba P500 I installed Toshiba 250 GB SSD and upgrade RAM to 8GB so my boot up is 15 seconds. my laptop is 3 years old but it's so fast love it. All my laptops have SSD including MacBook. Toshiba P 500 is much faster than MacBook when booting up lol I edit videos as Videographer and love this laptop :)
Good catch. Yes I am on SATA 3. I think the laptop is the limiting factor not the drive. And yes SATA 6 would be helpful but the laptop doesn't have it. It still made it incredibly fast compared to what it was before. I can't wait to do my desktop. I'm going to get the Crucial M500 960GB.
I can vouch for the jump in performance. Recently upgraded from a WD Black 7200 rpm drive and when I ran the Win7 performance test [scale of 1.0 to 7.9] the hard drive performance went to 7.9 (max). Boot up time is cut by about 2/3.
Yeah it's crazy how fast SSDs are. I mean the WD Black 7200 is a high performance hard drive too and you still see a big boost. Thanks for letting us know.
One thing to note is that most laptops use sata 2, which would bottleneck most SSDs at around 200~250mb/s. Having a faster SSD in a sata 2 config is however still useful since the speed for small files will be increased significantly. Also, sata 3 drives can be used with sata 2 connectors, it only means that they might hold more performance than you'll get with it in sata 2. There is also no config to make it work in sata 2, just connect and it'll work. (even with sata 1 probably)
Im still blown away that you even own a laptop that takes long long to fully load. My patience is non existent, any longer than 20 seconds in today's tech world is absurd.
It took a long time because I had to use USB 2.0 to CLONE my old drive which was 193 GB. A fresh install will go much faster or if you have external SATA port the clone process will be way quicker too.
You guys are so lucky there in the states and western Europe because firstly you have access and diversity and BIG competition between sellers and because there are REAL deals. In my country, for example for a mid tier gfx card we have to pay like 40 dollars ,hell I've seen even 90-ish $ more compared to amazon founds, and when there are deals going on(usually 2-3 percent, u rarely see like 20%off), the prices are the old prices cause they rise them before the deals are on.
SSDs are a great subtitute for HDDs in laptops, no more worrying about damaging it from drops or severe bumps that can possibly cause you to lose your important data. The only issue i have, the majority of laptops only use sata2 ports, so using a sata3 SSD will not run its full potential, but its still alot faster than a mechanical drive by far, you cant lose, so its a win/win situation.
SSDs are amazing. They are so fast and efficient. If you ever want to upgrade to a larger drive you can use this tutorial i made ua-cam.com/video/s1cUJDElJio/v-deo.html
When finally buying a new pc did go the SSD route for windows and some of the programs and yes. SPEEEEED! In the past windows would just go slow after a while and oh geesh time for another coffee. But now, if I start a program it is there.
Thanks for the great video very helpful. Should i buy a sata 3 cable with mine and hook that up or do i just hook it right up to my sata 2 cable thats already in my tower? Does it make any difference? Also my motherboard is a few years old its a X58 series does that mean the sata connectors on it are sata 3 compatible. Sorry if thats a noob question this will be my first SSD drive and im hoping for a quick clean installation with out any problems.
Just ordered the 256GB 840 PRO last night when it was on sale for 145 at Newegg and had 13 bucks worth of eggpoints to use so I knocked the price down to list 132, will be great to get rid of the bottlekneck of this ROG G750JM (the 5400RPM hard drive).
Hey! first of all nice video.. I wanted to ask my current hdd is SATA/300 will this ssd work moreover I also wanted to ask how did you go about installing the OS did you reinstall it again or the magician software installed it? And is it really worth paying so much for an SSD?
There are other options: a) If your laptop has an mSATA slot you can buy an mSATA SSD. b) If you don't use your optical drive you can take it out, get a HDD caddy adapter for the DVD bay and plug it in there (just google "laptop hdd dvd bay"). You can buy the caddy for something like 10$.
it was on sale for under $160, but i returned the laptop i was going to install it into. Instead I ordered a Sager with the same ssd in it already. Way better choice. The performance is amazine.
I got sick of my 5400 RPM slow HDD on my Acer TravelMate 5720 last year so the solution was to get an SSD. The old hard drive had 120 GB and the SSD has 128 GB which isn't too bad. I also upgraded my RAM from 2 to 4 GB. SSDs for old laptops with useless hard drives makes a real difference. For a desktop though (which I have), I would still recommend at least a 7200 RPM hard drive, maintaining it properly to maintain it's performance.
Yes you can use your old HDD as a back up. That's exactly what I did. You might have to enter the BOIS one time when you replace the drive so it recognizes it first.
Used the Samsung 480 SSD (Under $60USD from Amazon) had a 2 gig stick, bought a 4 gig ($35 USD eBay) this 2007 MacBook 3.1 is faster them my now deceasted 2012 MBP. Definately reccomend this mod.
Will SSDs like the Samsung you reviewed here work with older SATA II or even SATA I interfaces? If they do, will the performance improvements still be enough to justify using them?
yes, you can use sata 3 drives in sata 2 without any other implications than that read/write will be bottlenecked at 200~250mb/s. note that 500mb/s drives can still be useful since slower drives might only have 20mb/s read for 4k files. The only two SSDs I can vouch for are Crucial M4 and Adata SX900(I have also used SP900, which is much(!!) slower for non sequential reads/writes) Everyone please look for benchmarks on many several options before buying an SSD.
Do you know what? A couple of days ago, I have upgraded my Acer TravelMate 5720 laptop from: 2.00GB DDR2-L RAM, 120GB 5400RPM HDD (HITACHI GST) To: 4.00GB DDR2-L RAM, 128GB SATA SSD (SAMSUNG) Before, I was so pissed at how slow it was, but now, it is so fast, although the 1.8GHz dual core processor, the slow graphics card and the slow internet is keeping it slow. But still, at least an SSD will enhance the performance of my laptop to a decent level. Not to mention that I got the whole 4.00 GB to use compared with modern computers which often takes off a couple of MBs off the RAM.
i always focus on the upgrading RAM and the processor and never though HDD is big deal ....till today when it crashed and i lost all my files during 2 years ...and never thought about making a backup ..

I got the Samsung 840 Pro of your drive and I"m using it in a Dell Latitude E6400 Dual Core System with Windows 7 and runs way fast even on mine. It's a great drive and got mine under $100 brand new! Cheers! :D
Nice! thanks for sharing WolfPaw.
legends says it's still loading lol
One of the best how-to videos I have heard. I like your style. Very informative and friendly.
i have a laptop that doesn't have a ssd and it boots in 3.5 seconds, love you future
which windows are you using?
Jeet Sharma Windows 10, was the same when I was using windows 8.1 If I remember correctly.
Alinutz Alin What optimizations you did to get that boot time?
I don't have any start up when it goes to desktop, maybe is that or I don't really know anything else
Alinutz Alin 0 Startup programs can't do that good on HDD anyways Thanks actually I am a person who is never satisfied with boot time and I must say you're a lucky person😊
Samsung says read write should be 540/520. your benchmarks are sad. check your BIOS. LOOK for AHCI
Like my motherboard his is also probably cutting that speed in half :+
@@coppercanyonhealth4594 ?
This is a really great review! I'm surprised you have this little subscribers. You should be i the hundred thousands!
m8 you are not using that new ssd full speed. plug it into Sata 3 6gb/s port and you will get 550 read speed.
Excellent info...I saw this video on Sat and added the product to the cart and on Sun I found it 10 bucks cheaper! Your trick works :)
SSD is a nice shit^^!
*****
Warranty is the only word I have to say. The non pro version has 3 years and this pro version has 5 years.
***** If you check out the Tomshardware article on SSD vs HDD reliability, their failure rates and return rates are actually really good.
***** you can replace ur ssd with samsung since its warranty is 3 years
Nice, that's an awesome deal.
Just get an SSD straight
I just installed the Samsung Evo 860 (250Gb) + 16Gb ram in my Dell Xps L502x (by my self, watching youtube useful vids though)..and I just got a new computer! Temperatures are almost 20 degrees below the former standard!
can i have a hard drive and a SSD in a computer?
Depends on whether you have physical space in your computer if it is a notebook. Many notebook computers can substitute the CD/DVD for a hard-drive. For a desktop computer, it is a very normal procedure...
Yur mother loves my hard drive! Lol
An SSD and RAM upgrade is the sweetest treat you can give you laptop.
SSDs are great for speed but bad for long term storage due to their high levels of wear and tear problems with the life expectancy of the drive.
You made great examples out of showing the benchmark and opening those heavy softwares.! Thumbs up
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed the video.
Samsung 840 plus Mac Pro 2010 quad rocks! Best upgrade ever.
Probably the best review on youtube i've ever seen. Perfect.
Depends on the maker but typically Hard drive and Ram replacement does not void the warranty. They are well aware that these are parts that get replaced. But damage due to these parts may not be covered. .
i saw your internet browser and immediately knew what year it was.
I just got my SSD installed on my macbook pro (Runnning Windows 7 only) and its SOOO worth it! i love it!
I would never run a notebook without an SSD. This video shows the advantages of this device very good.
+atmo330 I agree Atom.
Thanks and great to hear that Legend.
Very well made and informative video. Together with the text linked information, one of the best instructional videos I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Saving up for the 1TB 840 Evo.
I just Installed 2 1 TB SSD drives
awesome!
just ordered Samsung evo 250 GB for my Toshiba satellite l850. thank you for a great review
Glad I could help. Toshiba makes some good laptops. I want another one now.
Legend has it that laptop is still booting up.
Your review sounds very professional, very well done!
Im still blown away that you even own a laptop that takes long long to fully load.
My patience is non existent, any longer than 20 seconds in today's tech world is absurd.
I can't wait for when SSDs are standard in all PCs. They really are fantastic.
This was the best review/install video I have seen
It took a long time because I had to use USB 2.0 to CLONE my old drive which was 193 GB. A fresh install will go much faster or if you have external SATA port the clone process will be way quicker too.
Paired with my black magic 4k and 2.5k it's a mobile production field machine dream. As well as being able to mobile edit 4k raw.
The only issue i have, the majority of laptops only use sata2 ports, so using a sata3 SSD will not run its full potential, but its still alot faster than a mechanical drive by far, you cant lose, so its a win/win situation.
been using the 840 Evo 120GB as boot drive for a while, and it is so awesome!
I just got a laptop from Bestbuy and it comes with a 256GB SSD it works amazing.
Just got a 250 GB SSD by Samsung for $85. Thanks!
+CooledLead Nice work!
HI there, I just want to say, I was deciding to buy an SSD and this video is really useful to know if you want the new SSD or not :D Thanks man...
No problem and thanks!
Hey! first of all nice video..
I wanted to ask my current hdd is SATA/300 will this ssd work moreover I also wanted to ask how did you go about installing the OS did you reinstall it again or the magician software installed it? And is it really worth paying so much for an SSD?
There are other options:
a) If your laptop has an mSATA slot you can buy an mSATA SSD.
b) If you don't use your optical drive you can take it out, get a HDD caddy adapter for the DVD bay and plug it in there (just google "laptop hdd dvd bay"). You can buy the caddy for something like 10$.
I love this drive, I have 2 in my desktop and I can completely boot up in 18 seconds.
it was on sale for under $160, but i returned the laptop i was going to install it into.
For a desktop though (which I have), I would still recommend at least a 7200 RPM hard drive, maintaining it properly to maintain it's performance.
fuc...great details and knowledge about your samsung ssd ans amazon strategies...we need guys like you, thx so much !
Yes you can use your old HDD as a back up. That's exactly what I did. You might have to enter the BOIS one time when you replace the drive so it recognizes it first.
I got the samsung 850 SSD 500gb upgrade for my msi notebook way of a difference good vid do thnx👍🏽
Used the Samsung 480 SSD (Under $60USD from Amazon) had a 2 gig stick, bought a 4 gig ($35 USD eBay) this 2007 MacBook 3.1 is faster them my now deceasted 2012 MBP. Definately reccomend this mod.
I have several SSD's. Samsung is the best!
Thanks, You can have two hard drives if your laptop has two bays. The smaller ones don't though. Other wise you have to use a portable.
Will SSDs like the Samsung you reviewed here work with older SATA II or even SATA I interfaces? If they do, will the performance improvements still be enough to justify using them?
Awesome vid....simple, and well explained.....
Subscribed for sure!!!
Sandisk ultra plus is also a good buy at the moment, performance is about on par with this drive and it should last a lot longer.
yes, you can use sata 3 drives in sata 2 without any other implications than that read/write will be bottlenecked at 200~250mb/s. note that 500mb/s drives can still be useful since slower drives might only have 20mb/s read for 4k files.
The only two SSDs I can vouch for are Crucial M4 and Adata SX900(I have also used SP900, which is much(!!) slower for non sequential reads/writes)
Everyone please look for benchmarks on many several options before buying an SSD.
Samsung 840 SSD is nice. The new 850 pro speed is amazing..
Do you know what?
A couple of days ago, I have upgraded my Acer TravelMate 5720 laptop from:
2.00GB DDR2-L RAM, 120GB 5400RPM HDD (HITACHI GST)
To:
4.00GB DDR2-L RAM, 128GB SATA SSD (SAMSUNG)
Before, I was so pissed at how slow it was, but now, it is so fast, although the 1.8GHz dual core processor, the slow graphics card and the slow internet is keeping it slow.
Wow I'm swapping my HDD for an SSD. This is amazing. I was going buy a all new laptop.
good work and thanks for the reassurance, that SSD is the way to go even for desktop.. make full sense
