in their defense, i assume using deflemask is way simpler than whatever the fuck they had back in the day considering we probably have more documentation on those chipsets
It's because the whole project was rushed to meet the 32X launch date. If they had pushed it back to spring of 1995 then it probably would have come out better while still beating the PS1 and SNES versions by a few months.
wasn't it not Id themselves that handled the audio? like for the PC version they did just slightly modify an existing OPL General MIDI bank, which wouldn't be something they'd have on the 32x unless they used GEMS

Question: what is better? Sega Megadrive GEMS or Delfemask? For deflemask you have to pay for the program, but for GEMS? Yes, you will have to buy a Megadrive and a midi converter, but it can sound good (if you are using a modded Model 2), and I think it's 32X PWD and Sega CD Ricoh soundchip compatible.

The 32x has extra channels that are able to playback samples, so I guess it would be fine.
