    Jim, you have a pretty good idea of what your garden will look like in 2024. I on the other hand, still don't have a clue. However, once our temperatures warm up in the spring, I need to get my new raised beds, 4' x 8' x 2' tall filled with a good planting medium, and then I'll finally be able to make plans. That's a lot of good looking veggies to be growing. I bet you can't wait until spring. It's that time of year to start thinking about what to plant here in Florida too. We're having our winter right now. 40- degrees to 60+ degrees. I like warm weather so much better. Winter crops are slowly getting started. So many choices, have fun deciding which ones to grow. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    Do you have a cold frame going this winter with hardy salad greens? I have a few cold frames filled with hardy greens and they are still doing well despite a low of 0F so far. On the very coldest nights I covered some of them with scrap foam board to keep the internal temperatures from falling so far and that definitely helped. Right now I have: Landis winter, Outredgeous, Speckled Trout, tatsoi, mizuna, arugula, spinach 'Space', baby red Russian kale, cilantro, hon tsai tai, Tokyo bekana, wasabina and a few carrots and leeks buried in mulch. I would enjoy seeing a short video of your winter garden if you have one growing right now.

    Good Morning Jim - thanks for your 2024 crop list. Still working on my list but need to get my seed potatoes ordered if I hope to have any this year. I plan to grow just 3 varieties of dwarf tomatoes, peppers, onions, carrots, beets, and some spinach/kale. Due to my space limitations most will be started indoors to get a jump on growth before going outdoors. Your garlic looks great and hope to try that next fall. Seed catalogs are stacked up and waiting..

    Thanks for the update! I started my first batch of pepper seeds Dec 31 but I'll save my pepper comments for your pepper video.
    I'm planning to start my first batch of tomato seeds (the most cold-tolerant) for Jan 28. Boronia is on my list this for later this spring along with several other dwarf tomatoes that are new to me, plus "42 Days" which is an incredibly early semi-dwarf (but as I've learned not very cold-tolerant -- earliness and cold-tolerance are quite independent). Last year Mountain Magic was the biggest new tomato success. I also grew honeygold and honeycomb which were successful in the cherry category.
    My top two pole beans at present are Northeaster (long, wide, and flat -- tender even when huge) and Fortex (long and round) and also tender. Last year my butternut squash did poorly because I planted it in poor soil (in 2022 it volunteered in an established bed and did much better). I'll be starting peas in 3 gallon pots sometime in the next month, when there is good weather in the forecast.
    My area has been reclassified from zone 7a to 7b. I took out one large white oak because it was too close to the house and the solar panels we since installed; I'm hoping that I'll have a bit more sun in my Old Garden as a side effect.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for sharing some of the things you are growing, and the additional information on them. That is always very helpful. We went from 6b to 7a, but I doubt if I will do anything different than I always have. We got down to 17 below zero F. just a couple of year ago, so I think changing our zone status might have been a bit premature. Hope you like the solar panels. My son has had some for 6 or 7 years, and he loves them. He even installed a couple more last year. I have one tray of pepper seedling that are about 3 weeks old or so, and one tray that is just now sprouting. It's gonna get crowded in here.

    • @davidniemi6553
      @davidniemi6553 4 місяці тому +1

      Crowded with seedlings is what happened to me last year -- way to many pepper varieties and both peppers and tomatoes were started too early. So I had too many plants that were too big and stuck indoors for too long, even though I did a lot of other things right. This year I'm starting peppers 5 weeks later, and tomatoes 2 weeks later. Peas in pots outdoors, earlier once we start getting some warmish weather mixed into the forecast.
      The coldest I've seen here was -15F back in about 1992. Haven't even seen below 0F in several years and have had almost no real snow for several years. This winter, just extra rain so far.

    I forgot to report back to on my harvest of the Huckleberry Gold potatoes. I live right on the edge of zones 6b/7a. Technically I am in 7a, in the high desert of SW Idaho. We had a terrible weather year and didn't have consistent access to water, which really hurt ALL of my crops. Out of 14 micro tubers, 5 grew. I only got roughly 4-5 lbs of potatoes. They were relatively small overall, with a few being fairly nice. None were what I would call bakers. The skins are thin like a Yukon Gold, the flesh much the same, moisture content high and they were very flavorful. I have dysphagia so texture is extremely important to me. They cooked up very creamy with a buttery flaver. I found them to be even easier to swallow than Yukons. These potatoes were developed with diabetics in mind and I will say that I never noticed any increases in my blood sugar like regular potatoes might cause. I will definitely try them again in hopes of a better crop. This time, I will use grow bags or buckets or something rather than direct, in-ground sowing. My husband cooked my baby potatoes that I planned to use for seed 😂 so I'll have to buy them again but I do think they are worth it.

    I came 15 years late into a tomato project that crossed wild ancestors to rrstore the lost genetics from centuries of inbreeding with them. The stigma on these tomato plants are exerted a long time before the flowers are releasing pollen. So the stigma isn't going to get self-pollinated while growing out of the anther cone. These tomatoes need to cross with other exerted stigma tomatoes so there is lot of shifting of genetics finally from plant to plant. This would help in future disease protection breeding work. From this genetic landrace mix I hope to see a lot of new varieties developed by other breeders in coming years.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  Місяць тому

      Crossing tomatoes is fascinating. So is crossing peppers and other things to. There are so many ways to go with crosses. Getting some wild genes back into the gene pool sounds like a great idea.

    You know, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that "dark" tomatoes or "white" tomatoes.... doesn't mean much. I've had very good Krims and very average Krims. I think the impact of the environment, country, weather, is so significant the very name "Krim" means less than we think in terms of reliability.
