Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it. Your description was spot-on, and I'm impressed with how you talked about the gameplay based on just the visuals and description, even referencing other similar games. As for why I released 001 Earth on Steam with minimal progress, my goal was to generate revenue to fund animators, sort of like a Kickstarter approach. Unfortunately, that plan didn't work out, and the stress of tackling a complex animation set me back on updates. Plus, my lack of experience and poor planning added to the struggles.

As someone who's been working on a romhack for years now and advancing at a snail's pace, half because of real life getting in the way and half because of artist's block, i fully understand what it's like to feel like you're making no progress at all and that you just have to put something out there, as unfinished as it may be, just to feel like you're making any progress whatsoever. Putting out something this incomplete, though, is something you only do out of impatience, when you're tired or your project taking so long, and it gives you a false sense of fulfillment because you didn't actually create anything worth playing yet. I did the same thing for a while, releasing individual levels that almost no one cared to play, and once i did get out a full playable demo after 3-4 years, it felt incredible just because i can genuinely, truly say that i have created something that people have played and enjoyed, even if the full thing were to never get finished
Long comment here, only because This developer reminds me a lot of me as a child. I got out project that's not complete on the store page only because I thought I could get it done and to get fans. Yeah, Steam doesn't feel like the right platform for a game like this. It's something I'd expect to find with 0.5 star rating on NewGrounds back in the day
It's kinda wild that the unfinished pac-man clone I made with a buddy on the free version of gamemaker (that was just us following a tutorial step by step) had more game than this.
Yeah definitely sounds like something that shouldn't be on Steam, especially not for $5. You could get both Hylics and Suits with less than that and they're both fully fleshed out and very artistic games.

I think there are slightly more states in the development phase. Well, what can I say about this game? --------------------- Update: This is in May, not in March or April, but I will still give my thoughts. This is what should be a good foundation, but it is less than that. There is something to be had here, but it still needed something in order to be properly presented. It's not that there's nothing, there is SOMETHING...it's just not easy to see. That being said, it's not that it's bad or anything. I am actually pretty intrigued at what else there is to come with this project here. At the time of this update, there actually has been an update for the game. That doesn't say much about how frequent it will be for these to happen, BUT, it's better than nothing! Here's to more updates in the future.~
It's games like these are the reason why I kinda wish the Steam Greenlight is still a thing. Heck, it's also a testing ground while it is still being moderated within that area.
guys the developer will work on the game shortly he just can't right now, he was just stuck in a car crash while his wife was giving birth but the local hospital was closed due to a cyclone and a magnitude 8 earthquake smh he'll finish making the game playable after then
Not this time! I was going to, but it didn't work with the narrative flow, and this was being done right when the revisions to the memberships happened. Never fear though, Larry is never far away
Late on this, but I think not using Early access is a good idea. If you do it, you may be able to cut down the potential lenght of this series to a mere 234 years!
I'am 13 years old, and i have (somewhat) learned C++ using the internet, and I am working on a game like terraria, and i tought that my game was bad, but after seeing this (and I don't wanna be mean), I am really happy with my project! (Also sorry for my bad english, I am not from that country)
The current stage of the game is described on its store page as "The current state of the game is still enhancing the world generation and character basic movements". Well, it feels like they should mention what they *don't* have, not what they are currently working on. I think there was no ill intent from the developer, though. Life gets in the way, and sometimes it is hard to accept the fact that you won't finish that project. I think, this is what is going on here
I agree, I don't think anything was done with malicious or ill intent, it just ended up this way. But the dev should be more honest about the state of the game in the store, not in the game itself. Currently, it feels like a bait-and-switch
I want to say I started this series a week ago and as a complete stranger, I am so proud of you for getting this far. I can't wait for you to actually start the alphabet 😂
To be fair, this doesn't feel like a scam. This looks more like someone with a Steam Dev account that just uploaded big ideas before they had anything fully cooked already. Should the game me taken down? Yes. Is the dev lying to make a quick buck? No, they're just trying to make big promises in hopes to motivate to create big results.
The Dev is kind of lying, somehow. The description suggests that a lot of features are in the game... Which obviously aren't even in the slightest implemented. It's kind of a scam and kind of not...
@@-Shinoray- The thing is that there are scam games out on Steam, but you can tell something is completely off when you find them. As an example, there's a game called "I'm Looking for 3024 People" which basically unlocks the game when 3024 people pay for the software and complete impossible ARG segments. (impossible due to things like needing 300 people on a discord server entering codes one at a time with a timeout window that's shorter than a Bot API can poll the chat for updates.) If this game was on Itch or mobile for the same price, I would see it as someone's first game that is trying to ask for money to help work on it. Steam continues to have the "finished or nearly finished" games presigte that it honestly doesn't deserve anymore. Because of that, it looks like a scam when it's just someone biting off more than they can chew.
You cannot just list features that actually aren't in the game in the game description, then want actual money for the game. I'm not sure if the dev has ill intentions, but the dev was indeed lying about game's features on the store segment that's entire purpose is to convince customers to buy the game. In that sense imo it is a scam for the buyer. Okay the dev is okay with refunds, but like that doesn't change anything because buyers could have gotten a refund from steam no matter what.
@@TomaszRyszkowski It's usually better to attribute things to stupidity rather then just assume malice. If the screenshots looked different or if you had a situation like the Gardenscape "pull the pins" ads, then yeah that's clearly a scam. Both games are lying but one of them clearly is someone way off their heads and the other one is actively trying to trick people with ads and other malicious features.
I mean i guess that it's not fraud, just really bad neglegience. Still from buyers perspective this game is a scam. Intentional or not. Also dev has been notified of the fact that his store page is deceptive and hasn't changed a thing nor did he put the game off steam.
This would be totally fine if they didn't ask money for this. But it's hard to be lenient when someone thinks their work is worth money and their work is... well that ^^'
The Vagrant by O.T.K. games (a lovesong to Vanillaware games) costs less than this and it's really damn good. Like, really good. This absolutely feels like a scam. Thanks for showcasing this so we know to never trust this dev's releases.
Sounds like an interesting game! And yeah, I think what the dev really achieved here was shooting their own reputation in the foot. Releasing a game, promising features and then not updating for 2 years isn't a great way to build a fanbase.
Seems like the dev tried to make too much games at the same time... He should just focus on one especially since he have a wife and a fulltime-job. Nothing wrong with being a gamedev as a hobby, and working on your game 1hour a day or something, but not giving updates in 2 years... Yeah that game shouldn't be on steam yet! They need to add so much, but they don't wanna/can't spend time on it.
Yep, probably a result of bad timing with real life interrupting work/hobbies... but if their intent was to start building fans of the game, they should respect those fans by providing realistic project updates
“The slowest part of the game development is making graphics.” Oof. As someone who dropped off RPG Maker in large part because I got overly ambitious with my sprite art on my last project (which I still consider open), I feel this so bad. This hurts. This hurts a lot.
Very succinct review, I think you summed that one up as best as possible, hopefully the dev takes your advice. Something I kind of wanted to ask, you also write steam reviews for each game as well, and they are just as fun to read as well! Although I've noticed, I haven't seen any for .fall or .g. I understand that the steam reviews probably don't get as much traction as the videos, and for good reason, but I'm curious if you want to write any for those games, in case some poor soul stumbles upon those games, and isn't too sure. But either way, onto numbers, we are one step closer to 10,000,000! After it is completed though, my thoughts and prayers go out to you, so that you don't utterly lose your mind with the 50 different "1001 jigsaw puzzle" games. I am admittedly looking forward to it though, since a longform video where you cover a bunch of games would be cool!
Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't realize that I had somehow missed those reviews, I'll need to get on those ASAP I usually try to put them up within 24 hours of releasing the video for the game but must have missed those ones
Happy first numbered game! I certainly wasn’t expecting a “sandbox” game from that art style. It’ll be sad if you have to quit reviewing the Early Access stuff, namely because Against the Storm is amazing.
I plan to continue with the Early Access ones for now, but hopefully we don't find too many more like this. There's only so many times you can watch the same song and dance, but there is always something funny about discovering how truly broken a game is
i feel like a game - or rather, interactive game concept - like this shouldnt even be on steam, let alone for a price. early access is for games that are 80-90% done and just needs some finishing touches and bug catching. i wouldnt even call this 10% done; its the bare minimum of a program with no chance of actual development, considering everything going on in the dev's life.
I'll happily take a lower done % if there's still something enjoyable/interesting, and it provides an opportunity to give constructive feedback and guide development. It's hard to be constructive here when the most constructive thing to say is: Make more of your game before you sell it.
Gonna be honest, this looks like what someone might make to quickly test how a game engine is to use, not something you would share with people. I have seen more complete games with more features called barebones, and agree with you that there is basically nothing to give feedback on.
I'm no dev or teacher, but this is the kind of thing I'd expect from a student who was learning how to create basic world gen systems, as an assignment where nothing else matters
This really just seems like a case of overambition mixed with some poor business decisions. I don't get the vibe that it's *intentionally* a scam (Especially with the dev's response here), but in the state it was at the time of recording, it's hard to argue it as anything else, intentional or not. It's kind of a shame tbh, it's really not a great way to start your game dev stuff. I wish the best for the dev tho.
i will definitely create a game and place it so that it shows up in the next episode haha. Im definitely not writing this comment purely because i couldn't find a real one haha haha
Early access is abused by so many devs to release unfinished games or avoid criticism with the defense of "it's early access, stop being too harsh, they'll improve it" that being lenient seems unfair to people who actually put in effort. There's so many "early access" games that end up abandoned or broken because any criticism is shut down or because people are lenient that it's frustrating. If you put a game on sale for actual money then people should be able to fully criticize the product. I understand making a game is difficult and takes time, but games like this that get abandoned with nothing to indicate that set a bad standard.
I agree: if you think it's worth being sold for money, then it's fair game for criticism. Devs sometimes forget that what they make, how they make it, and how they sell it, has an impact on the wider gaming landscape. Sure, it might be small in the case of 001Earth, but when it occurs on a large scale it becomes death by 1000 cuts. You just have to look at the reuptation of RPGMaker games to see evidence of this
I wish they would just remove EA games from Steam, Super Indie carts is a good example, it was released back at the start of EA, and 9 years later is not even half finished. Wasted money on a game that likely will never be done, and my Experience buying multiple EA games is the majority never get fully finshed, they stay in that half state like Indie karts or get rushed at the very end and still end up only partialy finished. Rare expections tho Like 30xx and 20xx which ended with very good Megaman clones, but they are the outliers. EA is supposed to be a functioning beta, eg a 66%+++++ done game but Steam lets them post proof of concept alphas and its not right.
To be fair, Steam will let you publish almost anything to the platform, as long as you pay the $100 fee to do so. I want the old Greenlight voting system back
I think one thing could help was with EA games finished is that they still have payed for Steam entry fee but couldn't be priced, so people would have all the reason to finish the project and only use Early Access for testing stuff
@@GreiH In fairness, I wish EA removed their own subscription service in order to play their games on Steam myself. Otherwise, I'd be down to play the genuinely good EA games made there on Steam like the Dead Space Remake as a more recent example in mind.
I haven't yet, but I've soon some gameplay footage from other content creators. Looks like a fun game, but I know the devs have a habit of keeping their games in early access for a long time. At least there's something to actually play in those games though.
Well that's a first the first game I ever made is more complete than that and it only had two levels... And the dev needs to learn some focus I get it he wanted to show how big his game could be but wouln't be better focus in one or two biomes fill it with things for the players to do and find and slowly put new biomes?
That sounds like a much more logical approach. Create the core of you gameplay loop, and then use the different biomes to expand and iterate on it. This might be the result of trying to do too much at once
in game development I'd say something like this falls into prototyping. Prototyping is the stage where you are programming code but you're just figuring out the bare basics of if an idea would work or not, and the fundamentals of what you want to add to later. For example, if you wanted to prototype a racing game, you might make a very simple track and a car that moves. Prototypes don't need to be extremely simple but they usually lack tons of features that would make a game actually playable and fun. I feel like whoever made this INTENDED to do more but yeah, it seems like they made a prototype, and jumped ahead and put it on steam, which isn't great. LOTS of games never made it out of prototype or a game can change so much from prototype to even alpha, so publishing it that early is weird to me, you're basically asking people that play your game to be bored or disappointed.
This feels like it's pre-prototype, as I'd expect the prototype to at least have functioning interactions and maybe some basic combat. But it's probably the closest description for whatever this is.
You also probably shouldn’t start four more projects when you’re too busy with life and not working on your first project you’re currently charging $5 for that’s essentially a template.
maybe they don't have bad intentions, but it is their fault for continuing to have the game up on steam for actual money and essentially scamming people out of their money. when they realized they can't make much current progress on it they should have taken it down or made it free. yes, directly in game it says if u did not expect this level of progress u can refund. but if the buyer doesn't refund bc they have hope in the project and miss the refund window? thats just not fair to them and leaving it up for a cost will allow more ppl to throw their money into the void
Good video as always, though I think saying it belongs in the trash rather than "in its current state belongs in the trash rather than on Steam" might've been a bit harsh. I also think it's good practice to ask or at least mention that you will be using their words in your video, because if not, it will make people hesitant to speak to you off the record.
Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it.
I'll make sure to check back by then to see if you've edited the comment!
@@Graeldon And if the comment is not edited by then, there is always March or April of the next year!
@@Graeldon Comment edit has happened.~ Not March or April, but still happened.~
Now I wish Pray Game didn't start with a P, it will take a long time until you'd check that one.
Not sure I'll be able to cover that one, looks like it has R18+ content...
It's games like these are the reason why I kinda wish the Steam Greenlight is still a thing. Heck, it's also a testing ground while it is still being moderated within that area.
guys the developer will work on the game shortly he just can't right now, he was just stuck in a car crash while his wife was giving birth but the local hospital was closed due to a cyclone and a magnitude 8 earthquake smh he'll finish making the game playable after then
Once that's done he just needs to pop out for milk and cigarettes, and then he'll be back to work as soon as he returns.
The Suffering Continues, Holy shit the call out in the End Graeldon Mean xD
The truth hurts sometimes
@@Graeldon okay Steam Sequence Boy

4K monitor FTW
what, no name for the protagonist this time?
Not this time! I was going to, but it didn't work with the narrative flow, and this was being done right when the revisions to the memberships happened. Never fear though, Larry is never far away
Late on this, but I think not using Early access is a good idea. If you do it, you may be able to cut down the potential lenght of this series to a mere 234 years!
🤣🤣
I'am 13 years old, and i have (somewhat) learned C++ using the internet, and I am working on a game like terraria, and i tought that my game was bad, but after seeing this (and I don't wanna be mean), I am really happy with my project! (Also sorry for my bad english, I am not from that country)
Practice, Practice, Practice! And yeah, absolutely be proud with what you can do - and use this an example of what NOT to do
The current stage of the game is described on its store page as "The current state of the game is still enhancing the world generation and character basic movements".
Still got a long way to go for that to happen, but thanks for checking out the journey so far!
In my head canon this guy was trying to make it as a solo dev, then his wife got pregnant and forced him to get a real job
(impossible due to things like needing 300 people on a discord server entering codes one at a time with a timeout window that's shorter than a Bot API can poll the chat for updates.)
If this game was on Itch or mobile for the same price, I would see it as someone's first game that is trying to ask for money to help work on it.
But it's hard to be lenient when someone thinks their work is worth money and their work is... well that ^^'
since the "next update" was planned on releasing 2 years ago im not really shocked that the games mechanics are non-existent
001 Earth, also known as the baby who hasn't been conceived yet
The Vagrant by O.T.K. games (a lovesong to Vanillaware games) costs less than this and it's really damn good. Like, really good. This absolutely feels like a scam. Thanks for showcasing this so we know to never trust this dev's releases.
Sounds like an interesting game!
And yeah, I think what the dev really achieved here was shooting their own reputation in the foot. Releasing a game, promising features and then not updating for 2 years isn't a great way to build a fanbase.
Glad we've arrived at such a milestone, and congrats on 30k subscribers.
Thanks for the kind words! 50k is the next target!
“The slowest part of the game development is making graphics.”
Oof. As someone who dropped off RPG Maker in large part because I got overly ambitious with my sprite art on my last project (which I still consider open), I feel this so bad. This hurts. This hurts a lot.
"and unique entities that spawn in specific biomes"
That's every randomly generated game with biomes...
The true question is, what does larry think of the game.
Larry was the planned name for the player character, but the ability to name characters was still in development
I didn't realize that I had somehow missed those reviews, I'll need to get on those ASAP
I usually try to put them up within 24 hours of releasing the video for the game but must have missed those ones
@@Graeldon No worries! I'll be sure to check them out :)
This is my favorite currently running youtube series.
I'm honored to be a favorite anything!
omg. in the numbers era! the first of many, many, many more milestones to come XD
It feels like a huge step forward, but it's going to be a looong time before the next one
There's only so many times you can watch the same song and dance, but there is always something funny about discovering how truly broken a game is
The way you narrate, reminds me a lot of the narration in Slay the Princess.
Thanks! I think?
I've not played Slay The Princess (Although I've heard good things) so I'm going to assume this is a compliment =)
Lets go numbers!
w00t!
The game hasn’t changed even once since this video, and the developer literally saw it, wild.
It's definitely disappointing. I was hoping they would update the store page description at the very least
Whoooo! 001! Number of the Gamer!
Welcome to the Binary Era!
Well, there was an update in May. So there is that at least.
(Also made it to the numbers! YAY!)
I actually claimed a code. It's literally been about 10 hours, and I was able to claim a code.
I'm amazed they still work after almost 2 years
Sometimes I miss Steam Greenlight lol
I wish they'd bring it back, as it did a great job of filtering out the trash on Steam. But, each store listing is $100, which is more money for Valve
When the assignment is due at 11:59PM, you realize it’s 99 percent of the grade and start at 11PM🤣
i feel like a game - or rather, interactive game concept - like this shouldnt even be on steam, let alone for a price. early access is for games that are 80-90% done and just needs some finishing touches and bug catching. i wouldnt even call this 10% done; its the bare minimum of a program with no chance of actual development, considering everything going on in the dev's life.
I'll happily take a lower done % if there's still something enjoyable/interesting, and it provides an opportunity to give constructive feedback and guide development. It's hard to be constructive here when the most constructive thing to say is: Make more of your game before you sell it.
i lov da niko oneshot person at the end
Gonna be honest, this looks like what someone might make to quickly test how a game engine is to use, not something you would share with people. I have seen more complete games with more features called barebones, and agree with you that there is basically nothing to give feedback on.
I'm no dev or teacher, but this is the kind of thing I'd expect from a student who was learning how to create basic world gen systems, as an assignment where nothing else matters
🎉🎉NUMBERS LETS GOOO🎉🎉
Here we are!! Congrats🎉
🥳🥳🥳
This really just seems like a case of overambition mixed with some poor business decisions. I don't get the vibe that it's *intentionally* a scam (Especially with the dev's response here), but in the state it was at the time of recording, it's hard to argue it as anything else, intentional or not. It's kind of a shame tbh, it's really not a great way to start your game dev stuff. I wish the best for the dev tho.
i will definitely create a game and place it so that it shows up in the next episode haha. Im definitely not writing this comment purely because i couldn't find a real one haha
haha
👀
Early access is abused by so many devs to release unfinished games or avoid criticism with the defense of "it's early access, stop being too harsh, they'll improve it" that being lenient seems unfair to people who actually put in effort.
There's so many "early access" games that end up abandoned or broken because any criticism is shut down or because people are lenient that it's frustrating. If you put a game on sale for actual money then people should be able to fully criticize the product.
I understand making a game is difficult and takes time, but games like this that get abandoned with nothing to indicate that set a bad standard.
i mean yeah 0gravity is also a good example of this
I agree: if you think it's worth being sold for money, then it's fair game for criticism.
Devs sometimes forget that what they make, how they make it, and how they sell it, has an impact on the wider gaming landscape. Sure, it might be small in the case of 001Earth, but when it occurs on a large scale it becomes death by 1000 cuts.
You just have to look at the reuptation of RPGMaker games to see evidence of this
The game is not even in Alpha state, what was the developer even thinking?
According to the dev, they wanted to get feedback and attract an potential artist/animator. I don't think it worked.
this, in my eyes, isnt even pre-alpha. this is currently equivalent to a test project.
CANADIAN? YOO wassup
My dumb butt thought you meant the game company instead of early access lol
Have you played palworld?
I haven't yet, but I've soon some gameplay footage from other content creators. Looks like a fun game, but I know the devs have a habit of keeping their games in early access for a long time.
At least there's something to actually play in those games though.
A contrôlée only game still with a mouse cursor? That’s a pretty big red flag on its own
I don't think they know the controls of their own game. Partly because they haven't made them all yet
This might be the result of trying to do too much at once
got the second steam key at 8:29 thanks for the key giveaway /s
Make sure to savor your 5 minutes of gameplay
in game development I'd say something like this falls into prototyping.
Thanks for the video :)
Is the next game 002
Not sure, but that means the "007" games are a just a few weeks away...
Me realizing there's no James Bond games on Steam, because of copyright expiration > 😐
It's a new game called 027 actually - released in December, so it's super new!
You also probably shouldn’t start four more projects when you’re too busy with life and not working on your first project you’re currently charging $5 for that’s essentially a template.
The first game... game 001
Here come the numbers... and the signs don't bode well
maybe they don't have bad intentions, but it is their fault for continuing to have the game up on steam for actual money and essentially scamming people out of their money. when they realized they can't make much current progress on it they should have taken it down or made it free. yes, directly in game it says if u did not expect this level of progress u can refund. but if the buyer doesn't refund bc they have hope in the project and miss the refund window? thats just not fair to them and leaving it up for a cost will allow more ppl to throw their money into the void
