- [DISCLOSURE AS OF 9/21/2015: I've been asked to play one of the "Grandchildren" in the next episode of Albino Lullaby, making me a voice actor on the project. Stay tuned to my social medias for more updates in the future!]
This game is like Roger Waters' brain leaked onto the Internet.
Store page: store.steampowe...
That moment that Jim Sterling says "That's cool" to art you made *swoon*
I saw your name in the credits! Everyone who worked on this did a kick-ass job. Can't wait for part 2.
Good job!
owo hi i'm from several years in the future and you are cool
Thoranzalar Vhazen *uwu*
Holy crap! Jim F*ing Sterling Son! You have no idea how awesome, and a bit surreal, it is to see you playing our game. I'm a big fan of yours! Thank you!
May you include subtitles please? While I love the voice effects, the dialogue is a little difficult to understand, but that might just be me being hard of hearing. I look forward to more of this!
Well, it's a good game! Looks awesome, and I'm so interested in what's going on! Good luck to you!
owo hi i'm from several years in the future and you're still cool
Update
World: terrible
You: still cool
_"Albino Lullaby is a horror adventure game that doesn't rely on jump scares or gore."_
Well, that's good to know, I guess. Sounds like the devs really took to heart the typical things people complain about in modern Horror.
Scrunklet.
I don't think it was designed as a purposeful antithesis to modern horror games. I just think it's an inspired and unique game.
+ForwardMcburn It has an inspired and unique art style. The game is just walking around and reading letters and pressing switches to open doors.
+Bungis Albondigas dont forget the keys! the never ending keys~
FatKidWithFudge Also, this game is infected with worms!
I... I think I actually quite like this. :) I think if the Milkman from Psychonauts made a video game it would look like this.
+Liezl Bohnen Ahhh, that level was so fucking good. In fact, all of the crazies' minds were good.
+CRAZYFISH Gaming | TF2! Hearthstone! Podcasts! The Napoleon level was really funny.
+Liezl Bohnen It's fortified with what the world wants. What the world deserves.
It's amazing how much time & effort you need to put into something to make it look properly "hastily drawn".
Anyway, it's always a nice change of pace to see Jim enjoy a game unironically.
I always thought Jim was a screaming hammy slug head man
"Why did you make a horror game that isnt shit?"
"Because we don't breathe through our skin"
+michaelgtho ^Triggered
+michaelgtho I kept thinking of the old Worms franchise, which coincidentally breathe through their skin...
www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/worm/WormLife.html
ma-ma-ma-maximum sass!!!
+michaelgtho Where did this "breathe through our skin" thing come from? I feel like i've missed out on some crucial Sterling lore here.
+Roronoa2zoro it cames from the jimquisition of the week, the Quiet controversy, if you skip it for the SJW issues, you probably are breathing through your skin
It always makes me happy to see you play a game you like enough to link to the store page.
these guys definitely augmented their preorders
'Cause they breathe through their dollar dollar bills yo.
+Xen Noxatron ... Is this ...
... Is this memes?
+Fission Mailure I think it's actually memeception.
They may think they're special for making a horror with no jumpscares or gore but let's not forget that Telletubbies did the same thing near 20 years ago
+LegendOfRian this is our favorite comment so far. THAT BABY SUN FACE!
+Justin Pappas and dare we speak of... the Noo-Noo?
Jee thanks I had managed to block that beast from my mind until now, sleepless nights inbound
And apparently they have a stage show, I found out at the weekend. I think I realised how big they are. Noooo thank you.
This game's art style reminds me of one of those nightmares that's utterly absurd when you have some distance, but utterly terrifying while you're still having it!
I think I'd like to see Jim do a full playthrough of this. I mean, it seems short (presumably) and engaging enough that he'd actually finish it.
Wow..... it's actually good.
That's a bit of a shock.
the sound in this game is incredibly well done. the voice acting is all good, the effects on the voices are perfect as well. the game just looks like a walking simulator but the sound design was extremely well done.
+Zakk Day It can't be a walking simulator, things happen in it.
At least it's more like the Stanley Parable instead of Everyone's Gonr to the Rapture.
It's ALMOST like if you put a lot of love and work into a game, create something unique, and ensure everything is competently handled... people will like it.
I hope the rest of Steam takes notes. This is beautiful.
The really tactile feeling of the scenery moving around is something I've only seen before in Portal 2.
This game was abandoned by the devs AFTER they sold season passes for chapters that would never be made.
A horror game that takes place in the afterlife dimension from Beetlejuice. I can get on board.
Wow once it opened up into that city it was gorgeous. I wish more games would use unique art styles like this vs. the more technically demanding realism.
I love the art style, its gorgeous. The grandchildren look so freaking cool, I'm really impressed with this. With all the asset flips and unity store games seeing a indie title, and especially a horror game, that has actually designed and created original art and assets is such a breath of fresh air.
The use of buttons and signs reminds me of some latter sections of certain branches of The Stanley Parable. I like it.
+Andy McAwesome Same here. I cant help feel like your escape was planned. Like 'Mother' wants you to find her.
There's barely been any updates to this game over the last 8 years since Jim covered it. Not only that, but for the longest time the MSRP for episode one was $10. Now in 2024 they increased it to $20 and put an artificial sale for those who buy the season pass.
I don't expect any coverage of this game on the Jimquisition since interest for this game died long ago, but I'm posting this comment as a warning to those who're watching this video now and thinking "Yeah, I'll buy that." Don't give apelaw any of your money. I'm not even going to follow up with "until they release episodes 2 and 3" because they never will.
Holy fuck this game actually looks very intriguing and something I'd actually spend money on.
+Mr.Beast Rebel of the Hellscape hahah! I LOVE your avatar pic. TOO MANY COOKS! If you end up loving the game you can really help us out by writing a quick steam review!
We are a super small company and need all the help we can get to spread the word about our game!
Thanks a ton!
Justin Pappas I'll be sure to write a review when I play it (need a new pc first, working with a Windows Vista still) and spread the word! I'm more than happy to support a company who will actually put time, effort, and creativity into their product rather than all of the crap churned out on steam and even in the games industry at large.
+Mr.Beast Rebel of the Hellscape Thanks for saying so much Mr. Beast!
Totally in love with the art design, It's like if tim burton built a stage for a pink floyd concert. Those are definitely worms from hell, risen to avenge all the poor sods who get punched, shot, drowned and exploded for our entertainment. Fear them!
Jim's videos are slowly becoming the ones I most look forward to every day
OK that's on the "to play" list - I'm actually bailing halfway through to avoid spoiling any of the fun
I really like the way losing your sight factors into your 'health', and the eye removal theme in general - sight is obviously the main way video games interact with the audience, so having it central to the horror element works great.
+Vorpal Kitten Thanks Vorpal Kitten! SNICKER SNACK----time! mmmmmm yummy kitty treats.
You know it's going to be a good game when Jim links to the store page in the description
I cant believe i haven't heard about this game before, the visual design is amazing. Its so good to see developers put this kind of effort into their product.
19:08, that pool has a diving board even though it's barely three feet deep.
+Dr Shaym Jump on in! You'll be fine!
I don't think they scream so much as gargle.
This kind of reminds me of American McGee's Alice
+bloodrunsclear Alice was a huge influence on Albino Lullaby. We love that game! If you end up loving this game you can really help us out by writing a
quick steam review! We are a super small company and need all the help
we can get to spread the word about our game! Thanks! ...as her vorpal blade went ..."____________"
+Justin Pappas snick-a-snack
+x1StapleGun ten points for YOU!
Justin Pappas Why is a raven like a writing desk? ;)
I'm honored, especially if I'm speaking to one of the developers! This is inarguably one of the most creative and genuinely creepy games to come along in awhile!
+bloodrunsclear wow, thanks so much! you make us feel all warm and cuddly! ... and screaming and hammy.
It's a giddy feeling, watching you enjoy yourself.
It really nails the most important part of horror - making the player feel unsettled and disturbed.
I went to check this out and I got this: "The Steam Store is experiencing some HEAVY LOAD right now. Please try again later" heehee "heavy load"
These game looks pretty neat, I like the art style.
I breath through my skin
Some of the people who read this are so stupid....
"The enemies are to slow and not scary."
So, do you want fast running zombies? Is that what you want?
"The game entails walking around and pressing buttons."
The only other way this could be a horror game is if it was a shooter.
So all of the negative reviews are upset this game wasn't resident evil. WE ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH OF THOSE!
LOL. I love the noises those things make. They're creepy but hilarious at the same time... Props to the developers of this game. Not really my kind of thing but they did seem to create an interesting world and put a lot of effort into the actual design of everything.
I thought I was oficially done with first person horror games but this thing looks really damn good!
Wow... that is certainly something, keys aside this has so much personality and imagination to it, I am digging it.
Someone with an irrational hatred of chairs just looked at this game and whispered "Jackpot..."
The one game that needs subtitles gets none. Dang.
+Viking the Shambling We're working on adding subtitles to our next Albino Lullbay' patch!
Thank you for repeating what they said, I love that they're an accent I can understand, but the watery effect makes it difficult to understand and I wish they'd added subtitles.
Hopefully when they release the next two episodes they'll put them in, and I can't wait to hear you in it!
This is a great game, I love how original in design (of both childishly-coloured environment and creature) it is.
What a chairful game.
+Lofty Skinner definitely had it's legs, this one.
+Zakk Day alright sofa so good with these jokes.
+Billy McGhostChilli those are some really suite puns
+killslay I guess they needed to get them off their chests.
+Billy McGhostChilli I don't know, it sounds like we're just lampshading the real issues here. Maybe we can table this for now?
This is actually very nice looking. And the pacing is far better than almost 90% of the "horror games" you usually play. I totally could picture you as a voice actor in a sequel if there ever will be one.
Thanks so much for the vid, Jim!
10 minutes in and I'm really liking this game's style. Interesting stuff.
+Mellow Gaming Shiiiiiiiiiiit.
Dis good.
+Mellow Gaming i r8 8/8 skyrim with horror
+Mellow Gaming Already 1 minute in I was thinking that this looks as if Mateusz Skutnik went 3D. However, that sentiment is destroyed when the enemies shows up.
Very under rated game :P
It's been 3 years and still no sign of episode 2 on the horizon...
I just added the game to my steam wishlist...
Here is me hoping the game will be released at all -.-
Jim, I saw this video when it was first released, and I FINALLY got around to playing this game last night... SO GLAD I DID. One of the best games I've played in ages. Definitely the best I've played since DOOM came out.
You nailed the Pink Floyd comparison, I was thinking the same thing when I heard that dude yelling.
I could absolutely imagine a Pink Floyd style prog rock album being set to this. Reminds of The Wall, the art, the sound design. Could be a fascinating game.
This game looks as though it should have been a Psychonauts level where we dive into Jim's mind.
So this is the Jimquisitions true form, eh?
I think that it's interesting Jim subsequently mentions he feels (in a very positive way) that this game is like "Roger Waters spunked onto the internet", because the beginning, with the indistinct screaming, somber music, radio news voice, and vehicle noises is REALLY FUCKING reminiscent of the introduction to The Final Cut (The Postwar Dream), the lyrical allegory about sliding out of control into an oncoming big rig from Two Suns In The Sunset from that album, and a lot of the feeling of his subsequent works. Spot on as always, Jim.
Edit: After watching this, if Roger Waters, Gerald Scarfe, and the animators who work on the Borderlands franchise made a game, it'd be this. Wow. This is awesome.
The narrative and level design give off an Alice: Madness Returns vibe, very cool
i like how the lights look like skulls till you get close and look at them
Man, watching this hit a little close to home for me. It really reminded me of nightmares I would have as a kid. I dunno, I might end up playing this just because of that.
I can't help feeling this game would have been better with rock umlauts.
Albïnö Lüllabÿ
+Mirandorl what about, "Äłbïnö Łüłłäbÿ"
+jmyetman1999 You are what the game industry needs.
Mister Lamp why thank you.
+Mirandorl haha! That works surprisingly well.
The aesthetic to this...puts me in mind of what the inside of the Ecto Containment Unit from Ghostbusters might look like.
Also, I think the juxtaposition of mundane objects (like beds, tables, chairs, cups of tea/coffee/whatever) with the weirdness of the creature design is really effective strangeness.
Jim you made me want to buy this game now thank you for showing this amazing game.
Any game that opens with a quote from a member of The Doors is already setting high expectations.
+Harrison Holland I am the lizard king... I can do anything.
There's something cute when Jim Sterling is really enjoying himself with a game. His voice is like that of an excited toddler. :P
this is genuinely unsettling. Kudos to the devs.
Everything about this... Just fantastic.
I own this game now and It's quickly becoming a favorite. Thanks Jim!
This is the highest quality non triple A game you've played in a very long while.
My favorite thing about this is that the notes you find brief and feel like they actually belong in the world. Usually (to me at least) they break immersion because they come off as bread crumbs left behind by the developer and not part of the world of the game.
"We stared into the void, and it did not stare back." Nice Nietzsche reference. Very clever and subtle.
+Elias Liolis Good eye Elias!
If you end up loving Albino Lullaby you can really help us out with a quick, Steam review!
We are a super small studio and need all the help we can muster to get the word out about our game.
Thanks a ton!
Justin Pappas Umm sure, I'd need to play the game myself, but I'd more than obliged to help hammer out an opinion or two.
+Elias Liolis thanks so much i hope you love it! the devil is in the details...
Oh shit, I'm loving the looks of this... Definitelly will pick this one up at some point.
I met the creators at Otakon. Great guys!
+Shadowcorphish Hi shadow! Thanks! If you end up loving the game you can really help us out by writing a quick steam review! We are a super small company and need all the help we can get to spread the word about our game! Thanks a ton!
+Gulliwog Wow! Thanks man! You really made my week!
I think the only thing that could make this better would be the ability to put on subtitles, for those of us that don't always process what we hear (like me), that way we don't miss a single glorious line of dialogue.
this environment and atmosphere reminds me of some of my dreams and I absolutely love it, wish Jim would've made it longer. now-a-days it is incredibly rare for me to like a video game enviroment, there are some but last ones I Truly Loved were Blade of Darkness, serious sam, Quake III Arena, Max Payne2-the fall of Max Payne, Bloodborne and Hitman 1 and 3.
"This is one of those games I'd love to do voice acting in". Past Jim, know that you get your wish in the future.
Wow. The voice acting is AMAZING. I just love it. They are creepy as hell with that over-acting is just great. I love this. I might actually get this. The art style and colors remind me of Courage the Cowardly Dog. The voice acting reminds me of the cartoon as well.
Just, brilliant.
This is one of those times I'm really happy to be subscribed to Jim Sterling. I doubt I'd have noticed this game if it wasn't for this video and I'm happy to do what I can to promote this title and it's developer on my own channel.
An intriguing concept, that is well executed and sends shivers down my spine? Is it Christmas already?
I was sold the second the slugs were introduced
I want to play this, which is a refreshing difference.
This looks awesome, and kudos on the VA role!
Well, that looks fucking awesome! Kind of reminds me of some of the Mad Hatter's levels in American McGee's Alice crossed, for some reason, with Psychonauts.
this is more like it. this stylized artstyle far more visually interesting. like it lots need more of these games
+Christian Schmude Thanks Christian! Is that a raving mad sonic in your profile pic? ha, awesome! If you end up loving the game you can really help us out by writing a quick steam review! We are a super small company and need all the help we can get to spread the word about our game! Thanks a ton!
+Justin Pappas thank you very much I will definitely consider buying the title. as for the profile pic it is sorta. it's taken from a panel of the Archie comic series depicting a scene of him pre Werehog transformation.
+Christian Schmude ha, sweet.
welcome back to jim sterling is a big liar simulator 2015! really you said the next one wouldnt be a first person horror game
+Kaptain Kappa
it's a first person horror adventure game!
+Kaptain Kappa BOMBING RUN: HEAVY FIRE - Poopy Plane
TheApocalypsePals
that wasn't a squirty play
+Kaptain Kappa "I promise the next gameplay video I upload won't be a first-person horror game. I promise!" I didn't want to believe our lord, Jim Fucking Sterling Son, could do this to us.
*****
this is advertised as a horror game... it 100% counts
Eh, for the most part it seems pretty good actually... I think it maybe needs a few more random quirks to entice exploration, more minor creepy things...
Like that chair with the buzzsaws, that could have maybe been animated and shown doing whatever procedure it was designed for on the empty chair.
Pretty sure imagination all by itself helps most of us fill in the blanks about that chair... and that type of approach is often scarier anyway. Plus it just makes more sense on a purely mechanical level if the chair only activates when other controls are hit or it detects someone put in it. The setting we saw is most likely the idle position
The Faces of Meth: Smash Bros Sandbag Edition
I played the game after watching Jim's video and here are a few points to keep in mind: the first episode is short (about 1-2 hours of gameplay with not much replayablity) you decide whether or not its worth the cash. While the episode was quite fun and challenging at times there is a big issue - the optimization. If you have an older setup as I do I do not recommend this unless you enjoy a consistent 15-20 fps in windowed mode with all quality set to low... this is especially true for the ending which seems to be bad even for good rigs but on an older one.. oh boy it was a bloody slideshow
you could say that the buffet was well...pre-paired *ducks a rotten tomato thrown their way"
It's the year of almost 2021, and episode 2 and 3 are still nowhere to be seen, yet they've been up for sale this whole time.
Congrats on the voice acting invite, I have a feeling you playing a Grandchild will be an absolute delight. This game looks brilliant, but I'll probably be waiting the year or so it'll take it to finish up before buying it. Thanks for the video, or I'd never have learned about a technicolour world of slimy thumb people and snake ovaries. Mmmm.
So Bioshock meets Worms or something fucked up. I hope there will be a review of this game. It probably deserves the full detail, especially on the fuck is going on.
There are just so many creepy things about this game. It's not really a shit-yourself-suddenly fright, but a creeping terror that makes you look twice at the shadows in the corners of your room. The game is both a literal and figurative descent into madness.
The vague explanation in the notes you find lying around about how the 'grandchildren' are created (yes, I'm pretty sure they were once normal humans) is one of the single most disturbing things I've ever encountered. Somehow the threat of mutilation is actually more terrifying that actually witnessing it.
1:22 pause to see an almost missed jump scare.
25:23 the art style, animation, and world looks like you're inside a giant pop-up book running on clockwork
this is like Puppeteer meets American McGee's Alice, very interesting game
Albino Lullaby would make a great name for a punk band.
This seems like a nightmare you know. Pretty much I picture that the dev saw this in a dream. The logic and setting seems to be something in a dream that when you wake up doesn't make sense but only makes sense to you subconscious and leaves you unsettled.
The noises that the grandchildren make remind me of 70s Doctor Who.
I'm very interested to see where this game goes, not just with this episode but future episodes. Seems like it would have an interesting backstory and might go to some interesting places. And that's something I feel that horror these days don't do that they should, make the world interesting. Give us a reason to go beyond the simple scares and go further and further into the mad world you create.
One year later and episode 2 is still nowhere to be seen...
I checked the steam page a while, sounds like they have problems due to being a very small team and having other jobs. The game is still coming apparently, the developer is aiming for the release of Episode 2 next year, so fingers-crossed. Just sad since I really loved the first episode of the game.
BodySprayMan
I hope they'll complete it eventually. The first episode was really interesting, I want to know how it ends.
They have been showing updates on their Twitter page.
AlduinGijinka
I don't have a Twitter, so unless it's somewhere right in my face, I won't see it. Thanks for letting me know, I'll go check it out.
I imagine that this is the kind of thing Terry Gilliam dreams about.
+TitenSxull I hope so! Gilliam was def a huge influence on us.
Steph! If you still check this, chapter 2 is finally out! A couple months ago in 2024, specifically. It's been 84 years lol
these things look almost exactly like a thing that was straight out of a recurring nightmare that I had as a kid.... 23 years ago
+phatbman This game is basically made up of my nightmares. I hope you get a chance to play and find some catharsis! hahah!
If you end up loving Albino Lullaby you can really help us out with a quick, Steam review!
We are a super small studio and need all the help we can muster to get the word out about our game.
Thanks a ton!
