Not sure if you still monitor the channel or not, but I greatly appreciate you syncing up what they’re seeing and all the additional edits you do. Makes it so much better! I don’t believe they record anything in the studio but it would be awesome if they hired you to do an official channel for them.
Rocky’s cornerman in the first two movies was a famous cornerman in the 50s. I think he worked with Rocky Graziano. He’s in the clip where Ray Robinson blew him up with the greatest combo in boxing history.
While they keep insisted he should have thrown the towel… Draggo had already shoved a referee to continue the beating, do they really think he’d have stopped like ‘ohh ok now it’s over, that threw in the towel’
How much better if a movie would it have been if the focus was on the Creed Estate v. Balboa, the State Dept., and that referee who was clearly on the take.
Having obtained a useless PhD in Semiotics, I can tell you that the towel represents tacit admission of genetic uselessness and, therefore, cannot be thrown without emasculating and, thus, deleting the Self-ness of his friend Creed. As professional fighters, they represent to the male audience the struggle for virility and efficacy that defines their societal utility. Thus, Rocky and Apollo live by a code that necessitates death as the punishment for failure to fulfill their duty of Male-ness. Apollo, being past his prime and, therefore, having no utility and virility, would rather die than be a liability to young virile fighters like Rocky, who, himself, must also question his societal fitness, the quest of which begins after the death of Apollo, echoing the classic departure-initiation-return cycle of the Odysseian "Hero's Journey" trope. Thus, Jay and Dan's thesis that Apollo would have later appreciated that the towel was not thrown is not justified. This is especially true in the face of the threat of the Other--the enemy USSR. The protection and, ultimately, survival of the State is thus shown to depend upon the Male-ness and aggression and utility of men in the face of the Other.
Apollo Creed, the Muhammad Ali of this universe, perhaps the most famous sportsman in the world of Rocky, gets punched to death on live TV by a Soviet soldier and there's NO investigation??? Fuck outta here!

Something I never knew about that movie until I learned Russian is how bad the translation at the end of the movie. Though an interpreter, Rocky tells the crowd how we can be fri mds and that's worth more than all the money in the world. The interpreter, however, tells the crowd in Russian that he said something like I feel like a million dollars. Once you know that, it doesn't even make sense that the crowd is cheering for him.
Rocky should have purposely got himself arrested in order to follow Drago into prison following Appolo's murder. Then Rocky could've shanked him in the chow line...
I think Apollo didnt want to give up because of the tension the soviet union had with the US at the time. Like, Apollo was wearing an uncle sam outfit , james brown just performed living in america, if he had lost it would have been the ultimate humiliation. And it makes sense thematically because at the end, Rocky puts his pride aside and forgives drago, building a bridge of understanding and brotherhood between the USSR and the united states.
Jacob is completely wrong. This was no exhibition in the traditional sense. This was the height of the Cold War. Apollo came out to 'Living in America' dressed as Uncle Sam because the match was an extension of the ideological battle between East and West, as were ALL the high profile sporting events, matches and games of this era (i.e. Bobby Fisher traveling to the USSR to defeat the Soviets in chess). In other words - Apollo died a patriot. Neither he, nor America, 'throws in the towel.' Get it now?
"Apollo's dead!? Oh shit.....BEWILDERED!!"
"Give a big hand for Saddam Hussein! He's fantastic!"
Such great o&A bit
Holy shit that "Throw the damn towel!" Sync up is fucking hilarious 😂
THE MAN IS BACK
"They killed who? They killed who? They killed Apollo Creed who you think next?"
Glad to see you back
I can picture Racist Philly Guy in the background of the scene in Platoon where Kevin Dillon says "he's laughing atcha, that's how the ____ laughs."
You know thw KGB had a field day taking names of those who shouted Rocky's name at the end of Rocky IV !!!

I think Drago would have been in serious legal trouble after pushing the ref away. He would have been disqualified for that.

"Round one, he's at death's door." 🤣

its an Exhibition fight..... no Boxing Commission needed ... the Ref could just be some Celebrity like Don Rickles or Rodney..
