From the Vault: The Makarov Pistol

  • Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford tells us about a Russian gun almost as "iconic" as the AK-47 - the Makarov pistol. The Soviet Army made do with the Tokarev TT-33 pistol and obsolete Nagant M1895 revolver as their standard-issue sidearms in World War II. Post-war trials seeking a new service pistol eventually led to the adoption of the "Pistolét Makárova". Nikolai Fyodorovich Makarov's design borrows from the Walther PP, but it's chambered in its own cartridge, the 9x18mm Makarov, a round similar in size to - but NOT interchangeable with - the 9mm Luger (9x19mm Parabellum). Typical of Russian firearm designs, the all-steel Makarov is robust, reliable, and elegantly simple. The double action / single action pistol has a decocker that also serves as a manual safety. The barrel is permanently fixed to the frame because the Makarov has a straight blowback action, with the recoil spring around the barrel, like the Walther. A mag release in the heel of the grip drops the 8-round magazine. The Makarov outlived the Soviet Union and stayed in service with the Russian military and police agencies until 2003, when the MP-443 Grach pistol started supplanting it. Plenty of Makarovs are still in daily service in Russia, former Soviet Bloc countries, and the Middle East.

    I've been carrying a Makarov so long I can't remember when I started. With the DA, SA action and a safety that locks the trigger it makes a reasonable addition to my pocket.

    I have a friend who owns a gun store, showed me one, and told me about them in 2007. He handed it to me and for a moment, it was like I was holding my Dad's old Walther. I told him I would try it. I did; I bought it, and would buy 5 more at twice the price, if I could find them. Mine is the double stack with one extra magazine. Each holds 12 rounds; I in the pipe, and 24 to follow up with. If you can't shoot your way out of a mess with 25 rounds with a pistol that shoots this good, you've wandered into someplace you shouldn't have been to start with...and yes, I also own an M-1895 Nagant, and love it for a good wheel gun to carry.

    • @penchant1972
      @penchant1972 3 роки тому +3

      100% agree. The only drawback I would state is that after you put 20 rounds or so through it, you won’t want to pick it up again. The recoil focuses solely on the webbing in your hand between your thumb and first finger and gets sore quick. I thought it was just me until I let my friend shoot it. His guns are .44 Mag, .454 Casul, and .50 AE. He deferred after a dozen rounds - he didn’t like the recoil in his hand.

    I use to see these at gun shows for years and pretty cheap too , but always passed on them because I was into the high capacity handguns like Glock's and others at the time, then back around 2008 when ammo prices and availability became a problem ,I saw the ammo for Russian surplus guns was always available and cheap and so were the guns ,so I started giving them consideration as a range toy , but by then everybody else must have had the same idea because they started becoming harder to find and the prices more than doubled ,

    I do complete disassemble and assemble the Makarov without any tool, including extractor. The only two parts I live in place are barrel (to remove you need a press) and trigger guard. Great, most reliable pistol I ever had. None of modern pistol can come even close to Makarov's reliability. My second choice of ccw. Just lack of power compared to 9x19 that's all it has in disadvantage. Capacity can be issue as well comparing it to sig365 or hellcat.

    I got into handguns in 2015. This was a time where the gun stores had two guns (mainly). Glocks and 1911s. It was a fight between old school and new school. Commie guns, such as: Makarov, Tt-33 (and clones), BHP, CZ-75B, and CZ-52 were scoffed at. The last couple of years we saw major newer and older American gun manufacturers turn out quality control turds, and people started scooping up all the tried-and-true military commie guns. Now you can't find them, and if you do, they're no longer in the $200 lower corner area of the glass display. I'm glad I got a couple of the ones I mentioned above before this happened.

    My "EDC" is actually a (Polish) P-64 in 9x18 Makarov. It functions flawlessly with all 4 magazines I have for it!, And NO I do not feel "undergunned" using "ball ammo", Wars were fought using ball ammo! It's a simple design (results in reliability!) that's easy to maintain. And easy to shoot! I'd recommend either the Russian Makarov or it's Polish cousin anytime! 👍😊👍

    • @cameronbartlett856
      @cameronbartlett856 2 роки тому +1

      Well, ballammo is plenty lethal, the problem is in a crowded area you will be putting others at risk if you aren't careful with your back drop, something that can't always be helped. Hollow points help reduce the risk with energy dump. In wars you are shoot towards the enemy's side so it's almost always a non issue to have them using ball ammo. Also if I remember right, you are not allowed to use hollow points in war, (for dumb reasons I'm sure)
      Makarov's actually feed hollow points very reliably too, at least from my experience. Now you do have to be careful using hollow points in a 1911, that I do know.

      @@cameronbartlett856 You are not wrong, And I do house hollow point ammo in my P-64, (Silver Bear, 94 grain). I just wanted to point out that I do not feel "underguned" using "ball" ammo. Many people do feel that way.

    For the pistol (with out a magazine) total parts count is 27.
    Most parts serve two and occasionally three functions!
    Truly a great design! Was made in Russia, China, East Germany and Bulgaria! I'm told most of the German made guns have fantastic finished quality. But they are also the most expensive to acquire.

      I can back that claim. I own a Russian civilian but my coworker who convinced me to buy it at the time owned a east German model and a Polish P64 radom. The East German one felt smoother and shot more accurately than my Russian civilian model and I thought it was already a nail driver.

    I recently got one in .380 with the adjustable sights and stuff. It's such a great little gun and it'll be my first conceal carry before I get one of the newer double-stack compacts like a Sig P385 or Hellcat. I'm into milsurp so not having it in 9x18 mak hurts a bit, but I was still able to find a good little stash of 380 during the ammo shortage, unlike 9x18. I'll probably get a 9x18 in the future when ammo shows up again.
