This is my favorite type of Oculus video. Just taking one thing - just one aspect of 40K's massive history, and picking it apart in an academic lecture.
I was literally coming here to say that. Their original scheme was actually an attempt to copy the pattern of one of the creator's real life pet salamander :3
I *really* love your work on the Unification Wars. Your words evoke the abject horror of John Blanche's paintings and concept scenes. And it's utterly terrifying. Part Mad Max, part Matrix, and at times part psychological horror story. Your excellence is unmatched in your field.
I love these pieces, however, one thing I wish that we'd see more of down the line, is in the description a list of sources/references that you used to put this all together so we know what to be reading if we want to experience any of this for ourselves in some fashion. Whether it's Heresy novels, or the 30K sourcebooks, or a White Dwarf article, knowing where you're picking this info from so we can look for ourselves would be great whenever practical.
I wanted to rewatch this great story, only to pull my hair out as I couldn't remember the name of the video, nor does it show up in the playlists. I thought I'd imagined the entire thing until I found it again today!
I love the focus on this particular part of history. It's fun to imagine the horrors that walked the earth prior to unification. Great video man, as usual.
I wonder if any Salamanders successor Chapter has taken up the name of "Fire dragons" the precorsor name of the Salamanders legion during the great Crusade before the Imperiam rediscovered Primarch Vulcan.
I think not. "Fire Dragons" are a unit in the Eldar Codex, so I suspect Games Workshop has not used the name for a Space Marine chapter in order to avoid confusion. There are however the Black Dragons and Star Dragons Space Marine chapters. The Black Dragons are a Salamander successor chapter, but it is unknown who the Star Dragons are descended from.
You picked a great topic. Early formation of the Imperium, I think, holds much fascination for many interested in 40k Lore. Everyone is trying to suss out information, and theory craft, and the most compelling bits are at the beginning. Example...if the Big E was prescient, it's clear that his military cadre had no idea of it...and if that's the case...then maybe at that time...he didn't.
I really wish GW would expand on the Unification Wars more. Like I’m not asking for 20-year long book series covering every minute detail, but like… idk, a supplement for Age of Darkness for armies/units during the Unification Wars would be pretty sweet. If only to see Thunder Warriors.
Another beautifully crafted narrative by Oculus! I believe we all wish you genuine thanks, as We revel in pure wonder & much needed escape, while you regale us with the more obscurre, esoteric & less-lauded tales of the grimdark; Where there is only time for... LORE
Hell yes!!!!! I been asking all the Lore channles to do this for like 4 years! Great, great story. Someone should animate it. Preferably NOT games workshop, unless its the Astartes dude.
I still say that he should have at least sent the rest of the thunder legions in with the salamanders, if not, just replace them with the thunder legions. This would allow the thunder warriors to go out like the bosses they are, instead of needing to have them executed himself. Hell he could’ve just followed the original plan. Send the dark angels, the custodians, and the thunder legions into the gallery. That way, no matter what happens down there when only the DAs and the custodes come out the other side, the “ they died, heroically killing the final boss” story makes a lot more sense and is a lot harder to question.
Great video as always. Would love more stories expanding on the unification wars. Please take creative license! It's an almost mythic area of the imperium that is ripe for expansion.
Old Horus Heresy Lore was so cool, it is over now, it’s creator rests in peace. It is high fantasy now during Siege of Terra. I wish Heresy had more of this!
Something funny for an April Fools Day video: The Inquisitor and the Oculus read Mass Effect lore (and the Inquisitor is for some reason unable to burn it or delete the recording)
Enthralling as always. I do have wonder who was in those dreadnoughts, given how early in the chapter’s history this was. Critically injured during initial training?
I've watched since shortly after you started. You have made quite the Library of reliable and enjoyable lore videos. I recommend you to all my friends who prefer audio to text for lore.
Thank you, I'm fairly new to 40k and fell in love with the Salamanders. I've heard of this story a bunch but, I only heard it mentioned. Side note: if anyone knows the book this story is in, I would love to read it. "It's also a Hammer!" -Vulkan
@criticalcommenter thanks, I'm about 1/2 way through the HH novels....embarrassingly, I don't even know what these rule books are but, I'll look them up.thanks again!
Because the Unification Wars were just that brutal. Even for Astartes, shit even for Thunder Warriors, the enemies of the fledgling Imperium were facing nightmares of Old Night that either had to be killed beyond hope of resurrecting or locked in the Dark Cells. When you face things like that, Space Marine or no, you are gonna get casualties.

Love the reference to their old color scheme as being a special camouflage used in the Unification Wars.

@@NemFX Oh, I love that!
Love Unification War stuff. When The Imperium still had a chance.
Love that callback to the gaudy cammo paintjob of the Salamanders from Rogue Trader.

Unification Wars content is some of the best content on this channel. On a sidenote, I hope we get another Chaos god video soon. Great work.

The Salamanders being such hardy badasses from day one. (Even if their paintjob needed some work)

Absolutely love that you are presenting us events that are never mentioned by other lore channels.
This is pure art. I was really moved by what you’ve made. Your best video yet.
Don’t ever doubt how great your work is.

PRAISE THE LORDS ANOTHER OCULUS IMPERIA UPLOAD
The brutal and beautiful vistas you paint of the unification wars, are the best part of this channel.
Would love a video "it would likely be more then one really" on the Sabbat Worlds crusade.

My favorite battle during The Unification Wars. Pure insanity.

Amazing, love it, love all your content. More Pre-Unification and Unification videos please!
"Operation Transhuman Shield, my ass!"- Legionary Che'f, upon hearing about his genetic inclination towards self sacrifice.
Finally got some painting time tonight. Thanks for keeping me company.
Love everything you put out and this is another great choice. I would love to hear more about battles of the unification of Terra.
Just when I thought I had decided on my choice for Legions Imp, Occuls goes and drops this !😅
the greatest story rarely told, we need more in depth unification lore and this is a FANTASTIC start.
Into the fire. Onto the anvil. 😤
What a pleasant surprise on this beautiful Friday!
Anything with hopeful Imperium is great. It makes the Heresy so much more crushing because that was the end of the hope for the Imperium as a whole.
I love your videos. They are well produced and voiced. Concerning this video, what do you use as references concerning the Unification War?
I have been dreading the day we finished the legion series and now we have this. Praise be to the Corpse Emperor

Best part for me of the imperial history great presentation, salamanders are so under rated.

This is why we need a Unification wars series from GW
Thank you loremaster this was fantastic. Please more of Unification War lore that is locked behind an eBay paywall

Is this the first of a new series or is it building off the other videos regarding the unification and the solar reclamation?

The unification wars are by far the best parts of 40k...without equal...
Why did the Legions already have dreadnoughts? Seems a bit weird to already have combat cripples.
@randomcenturion7264 Even if they had unofficial deployments. Dreadnoughts being a major part of initial official major actions. Seems weird.
Great job so interesting
Nice video !
Records must be kept.
Another gem
Could it be that the Trifoil Legions were to later act as a Pacification Force, when the Great Crusade would’ve finished?.
Great stuff
Outstanding!
I love your work keep it up
