Because it is actually a defining word or an adjective or even a relative clause. 것 means "thing" and 는 defines it, like "the thing that...". For example 노래하는 것: the singing thing". That's how I understand it and I hope it helps!!
Remember that Korean verbs come at the end of the sentence. To "move them" into the middle of a sentence, they must be conjugated first. We conjugate them into nouns using either 기 or 는것. He teaches at a university. This is the beginning of a third class so his students have already had 6-8 semester hours of Korean before they begin to study this. 것이 is used if there is an adjective and 것을 is used when there is action verb

What the difference between 는게 and 는건 ?
는게 - 는것이 untuk topik 는건 - 는거는 untuk subject
-하는 게: = -하는 것이 --> simple statement
-하는 건: = -하는 것은 --> conveys meaning of "difference", "contrast"
e.g.

수영하는 건 좋은데 수영장이 너무 멀어서 자주 못 가.
