We live in amazing times where any one with a couple of thousand dollars can make a professional looking short movie. Well done and thank you for posting it.
They are completely different things. One is a steadicam system and the other is a shoulder rig. A lot of people have both in their kit. It all depends on the type of shots you are trying to get.
Well, it depends on exactly what result you want. If you want nice depth of field, you can pick up a prime lens for relatively cheap. There are also some nicer but inexpensive zooms made by third parties (like Sigma and Tamaron). I don't like to give an exact recommendation since I don't know what kind of shooter you are or what result you are looking to achieve.
I don't remember the exact settings, but I definitely had the lens stopped down a lot. Probably about f/11 (there was an ND filter on as well, so in actuality it was at least a stop lower). I always shoot at 1/50" for the shutter speed since I'm using 24FPS.
I never tire watching this film. You did an amazing job! I obtained a Canon 60D and I'm still learning and applying the amazing features this camera has to offer. Would love to see the "Prequel" to this movie. Love the concept....
A lot of the sound was added in post. For the dialogue I mixed it to reduce wind noise. While I was shooting I didn't do anything special except manually set the audio levels.
I watched this without the sound, and it still gripped me, so very much a cinematic story. Great camera work, great edits and super sfx. Well done Mr Spielberg!!
No, I was not going for that at all. Probably my biggest influence is the Dogma95 school of filmmaking and shows such as Battlestar Galactica. Many high budget production use handheld. A recent example would be Hunger Games. Its a very conscience decision on the filmmaker's part on how the audience should perceive the piece.
so dope so im using the canon eos 7d and want to film dialog with 2 cameras you think this camera will match up also i like the color grading good stuff
firstly, an xcellent work on the video.. i wanted to know with the CANON 60D, are the video "TV ready" ? for example if i intend to record music videos with a CANON 60D, would the specifications of 60D allow it to be played on Television/ TV Channels ?
In the shot where the woman is running in the field, the blacks seemed too crushed and there was too much vignetting in my opinion. The river scene was great though, colors and stabilization looked great! Your cinematography and composite looked great as well! The only thing I'd recommend looking at is the color grading of the midtones (a little flat) and the color grading didn't have that traditional 'film' look but it's just a artistic choice :) Nice work.
Hey Matt, your videos and tutorials have been helpful! Just upgraded to Final Cut Pro X & have always wondered how ppl got shots where the background was defocused like 0:46 in this video (where Shannon is focused & the landscape is blurred out) and 1:24-1:36 in your "Parked" video (when the focus transitions from person to the car). Would you be able to give me some insight as to if that can be done in FCP? Or do you just do that manually on your camera? I use a Canon 60D with a 18-135mm lens.
Great video! I have a Canon 60D but its all about the person running the camera. Your quality is amazing! Im still learning so my clips never turn out this good! Any advice?
I was definitely not expecting the end part of it. It caught me off guard haha. Very beautiful video. Thanks for sharing it. And please make more haha :)
Wow, really well done! I've seen so many bad shortfilms pop up, but this one was actually pretty good! It is really well shot, very well edited, and the colors are amazing! Very well done!
Wow. This is really awesome. I just wanna ask that in the waterfall scene. Did you use the sound of the waterfall from an website and sync it or you used your boom mic to record it from the hill spot ?
Hey ! What do you think about Canon 60d ? Are you pleased with it while making videos ? I'm hasitating about 650d and 60d ( a lot of people say that the biggest disadvantage of 60d for videos is that it doesn't have autofocus ... is it hard filming without it ? ) . I still want the 60d but i'l be thankful too if you give some advise : )
hey Matt, I have been making short films on my family mac but I am begining to use up all of the space on the mac. Is there any way I can buy an external hard drive and save all of my projects on it? Thanks and amazing video!
Good job. Quick comment about the composited holographic UI: should be blurred a bit, because it seems to be rendered at max resolution (1080?) w/o blurring, yet the surrounding visuals aren't nearly as crisp. It needs to be "opticaled" a bit ... ( maybe a slight Camera Lens Blur ? )
I'm looking to get a 60D and just thinking of just using it for Video. Your lens is beast but i simply can't afford it. Can you recommend a good alternative?
This was amazing!!!!! I have two questions 1) What did you edit this on? iMovie or fcp x And You know the thing she pulled out the ground was that a pre keyed thing or was it real????
man you pimped out the camera.. did you shoot all of it with that lens? and yeah I wouldn't mind to see your work flow. Also does your canon 60d jitter when you pan?? cuz mine does that and I have no idea why!! thanks
Hey Matt. I want to get into film production, where can I go to learn that stuff? Also, where can I learn before I got to a school for that kind of stuff. Thanks, Matt
For better integration, I recommend you getting the suite if you plan doing some effects add really focus in on title work and motion graphics. But if you are just a basic editing person, fcpx will do the trick. and whats better, if you still have 300 bucks after getting the suite, you can go ahead and get fcpx along with it, and you`ll have the more the merrier as they say.
Dude what the hec???!!! That was awesome!!!! lol... and I just sold my 60D! Well it's because I got the 5dm3 now but I miss that swivel LCD! Great job on this!
Well i may pick up a prime in the future, most likely a 50mm 1.4, but for the time being i want a lens which is very versatile as i will likely just be using this lens for ever scenario. A lens which i have been looking at is the canon 15-85mm F/3.5-5.6 EF-S lens which has very good reviews and is about £550 or the slightly cheaper Sigma 17-70mm F/2.8-4 which is only £350 but the reviews are not as good.
We live in amazing times where any one with a couple of thousand dollars can make a professional looking short movie. Well done and thank you for posting it.
The waterfall sound was recorded in camera using a Rode Videomic. Some of the splashing and drop sounds were added in post.
Please add more to this short, it was captivating, everything about it was superb!
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
It helped that it was a really clear day. I also did a little bit of color correction to it.
They are completely different things. One is a steadicam system and the other is a shoulder rig. A lot of people have both in their kit. It all depends on the type of shots you are trying to get.

I use it fairly often. Maybe 6 or 7 times a month. For most of my projects, though, it just makes more sense for me to use FCPX.
I don't remember the exact settings, but I definitely had the lens stopped down a lot. Probably about f/11 (there was an ND filter on as well, so in actuality it was at least a stop lower). I always shoot at 1/50" for the shutter speed since I'm using 24FPS.
Of course you can. In fact, that's what I do, since storage space can go really fast when dealing with HD files.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
. . . Wow . . . this could be the start of something absolutely awe inspiring.
I'm absolutely going to do a web series one day. Its not really going to be related to this, though, except that it will be SciFi/ Fantasy based.
I never tire watching this film. You did an amazing job! I obtained a Canon 60D and I'm still learning and applying the amazing features this camera has to offer. Would love to see the "Prequel" to this movie. Love the concept....

What after effects did U use? Cs6? Please let me know for my videos. I like the holographic effect u used.
Thumbs up
OMMPgrower
sweeet i literally recent planned to get a canon 60d so this just supports its awesomeness
Oh Matt, you never fail to impress me.
Love the sound design!
Is there a part two to time runner? Fantastic video, we want the story to continue!
Good video effects and concept. Opens a door to a new series...Nice
I was looking around for Final cut videos found yours sunday night and almost watch all of your videos
Yep, its a partnership thing to be able to change the thumbnails.
Beautiful cinematography!
Shot beautifully man, and the communicator graphics were awesome as well. not to mention great job in casting. :)
No, I was not going for that at all. Probably my biggest influence is the Dogma95 school of filmmaking and shows such as Battlestar Galactica. Many high budget production use handheld. A recent example would be Hunger Games. Its a very conscience decision on the filmmaker's part on how the audience should perceive the piece.
lovely colours.
What programs/software did you use? I'm kinda excited after seeing this video, because I have a Canon 60d too!
another quality piece from a great filmmaker. Keep up the great work man!
what lense did u use matt
great video!
No, I didn't use a glidecam. All the equipment I used is in the description.
Looks pretty good on 60D.. I shoot on the same and its sometimes struggle to get a great image.
so awesome whee do u get your music from
Really nice work, nice places, nice shots with 60D and nice work on computer cutting an effects, il like very much!
Thanks! Since I switched to the 5D3, I miss the swivel screen sometimes too.
Yep, I had to so the close shots wouldn't be blown out.
so dope so im using the canon eos 7d and want to film dialog with 2 cameras you think this camera will match up also i like the color grading good stuff
Really liked the sound design, very professional!

A very short film, but I loved it. The cinematography is great, but WE WANT MORE!
Maybe a potential short web series?

How do you get such a good film look? It would really help if you could tell me which video you showed us how to do it in.
I used a Rode Videomic and did some audio adjustments in post.
Ok, Matt. The opening shot with the sun then panning down to the ground. What exposure and f-stop you used there??? VERY COOL SHORT!!
The Location! WOW!

Amazing! Great camera work and script.
WOW!
told an amazing story and the scene was incredible.

The color grading is a beast! Wouldn't mind a tutorial on your workflow for color grading!
Hey ! What do you think about Canon 60d ? Are you pleased with it while making videos ? Man! AWESOME work Matt! Keep it up!
Dude when is your new video coming out? I cant wait!
awesome! I could see that being developed into a story.
No, I mean I made adjustments to frequencies.
hey Matt, I have been making short films on my family mac but I am begining to use up all of the space on the mac. Is there any way I can buy an external hard drive and save all of my projects on it? Thanks and amazing video!
Very nice! Filmed in Santa Rosa Valley, CA??
Dude that was really really amazing, great work. Props to you sir, you can do what I could never do. :)
Hi Matt, I need an advice about audio equipment for video. Should I buy a Rode videomic and a zoom h1 or the zoom h4n alone?
Wow.. Just wow. That's amazing
This......Is.......Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Matt, this is great! Can you tell what mac computer did you use to edit & color grade this film?
I wish there was more to this.
love it wish it was a full movie
I used CS5 for this because CS6 wasn't out yet when I made it.
So freaking creative… Congrats...
No, not really. I used a follow focus, so that helped.
I used Final Cut for the picture/sound edit and After Effects for the effects.
I think he means what export settings did you use on premiere/sony vegas/whatever was used.
This is an amazing short. What ISO speed did you use when you shot thos film? I have this camera and your cinematography was perfect! Matthew Pearce
Had no idea you did this kind of thing...impressive!
So I was just browsing through Canon 60D videos to see if I want it or something else (limited budget), but I liked this video... cool $*** dude.
One more thing, make it a full length movie. This would be far better than some of the garbage on the sifi channel.
Matt, where did you find the soundtracks used in this video? They were great.
It's a modified version of "Top Secret" from Dropdrop.
Good job. Quick comment about the composited holographic UI: should be blurred a bit, because it seems to be rendered at max resolution (1080?) w/o blurring, yet the surrounding visuals aren't nearly as crisp. It needs to be "opticaled" a bit ... ( maybe a slight Camera Lens Blur ? )

And You know the thing she pulled out the ground was that a pre keyed thing or was it real????
AWESOME AWESOME!!! Sweet color grading!!!!
Yep.
Great work Matt, Keep it up!
Dude, can you explain how you got sounding so clear? What settings did you use?
I have EXACTLY the same RodeMic you're using.
Help!
can you do an instructional video on how you got these colors with fcpx? pleaaaaase!
man you pimped out the camera.. did you shoot all of it with that lens? and yeah I wouldn't mind to see your work flow. Also does your canon 60d jitter when you pan?? cuz mine does that and I have no idea why!! thanks
the term export is used for windows movie maker and mac software like final cut and imovie (instead of 'rendering')
Really great short, man. This convinced me the 60D was worth it. Especially for the voice, how did you get the audio sounding so great? Thanks!
Hey Matt. I want to get into film production, where can I go to learn that stuff? Also, where can I learn before I got to a school for that kind of stuff.
Thanks,
Matt
Was not expecting that ending!!!
Do you use anything in particular to store all your camera equipment? You seem to have a lot! Sweet video though.
NY-ice. Thank you for this.
For better integration, I recommend you getting the suite if you plan doing some effects add really focus in on title work and motion graphics. I'm sort of new to filming; would you recommend a Jag35 Rig or a Glidecam HD 2000 for a DSLR. I'm not sure if those are even comparable but...
mind blown ! Great Channel ! Thanks MATT
OUTSTANDING , HEY DO U THINK THE 60D IS BETTER THAN THE NIKON D3200
Dude what the hec???!!! That was awesome!!!! lol... and I just sold my 60D! Well it's because I got the 5dm3 now but I miss that swivel LCD!
Great job on this!
