  • The Sony RX1 & RX1R delivered some of the best images we'd ever seen when they launched, but they suffered from painfully slow autofocus. Now, Sony has launched the follow up, with a number of major improvements. How does this new camera fare when put up against the outstanding Leica Q? We went to the Glenbow Museum to find out!

    Also this episode, Jordan takes a look at the Turbo Ace Jockey Gimbal support.

    A quick note for using the Turbo Ace Jockey:
    We were unaware at the time, but the jockey is designed to be removed from the waist support while filming. Doing this will reduce vertical movement dramatically. If left in the holster, the jockey works great as a support, but will not get you the benefits of the fourth axis stabilization.

      Honestly the size is perfect, but if they had to increase physical size to add features, that's fine. The Leica Q's handling is fine. Sony should make a Leica Q-styled body with those features I mentioned.

    The in-shop video sequence comparing the Sony RX1 to the Leica Q had quite a sickly green tinge to it that wasn't very pleasant to watch. Apart from that another great review. The museum in the opening sequence was very nice. I find museums very tranquil places to hang out in...which I suppose is the intention!

    This about the 4 Axis Jockey Stabilizer at the end of the review. When it is locked into the cup, it acts much like a Steadicam and would require a heel-toe walk. Set the locking cone all the way up so you can easily pull it in n out of the cup to walk around and it should work wonder. If you wish to have the 4 Axis stabilization and still be mobile without worrying about your steps then I would recommend adding the Ready Rig on top of it.

    I use my camera for my vlogs, and some photos. I currently have a canon SX160is. I'm super outdoorsy and I travel a bunch. Any recommendations? I tried the a Sony HX50V and I feel like the frame rate.. at least that's what I think it was, didn't suit me. I walked my the camera and did a hop to side to side and it couldn't keep up with my motion. The stabilization wasn't very good either. I also feel like Sony has it's own filter of sorts because everytime I see footage shot on Sony it seems to have the same colorcast. I guess I'm looking for something idiot proof and adventure friendly.

    Thank you for the review. I am soon to be one of those people torn between "one or the other" as I am going through a purist phase photography and, given limited time due to work and other commitments, I am finding it a real drag carrying around heavy DSLR gear that actually puts my off from, as opposed to encouraging me, to go and shoot. I love prime lenses, and have always used them on DSLRs in favour of zooms (weight, more inconspicuous, sharper, less distortion, faster and better coma control all being major considerations).
    So the RX1R MkII and the Leica Q - tough, tough choice isn't it? In many ways a shame there aren't any third or fourth options out there to smooth the way forward a little, but, these two it is. On the one hand I like the sheer value for money of the Sony and the incredible matched sensor / lens combo. It has that pop up viewfinder, which put me off the Sony RX1 models. It has excellent dynamic range and low light performance. I don't personally care about this 4K waffle right now: until TV can transmit seamless 4K high resolution broadcasts (and that takes a lot of bandwidth to do so), I am still not going to care until then... 4K is, for me, a gimick at the moment and only really useful if you use a 4K display permanently at home, or love sitting in watching home videos all day at 4K, or, are a dedicated pro (and then you are not going to buy one of these for that purpose anyway). 1080p is more than adequate. On the negative side, I wish Sony had given the camera a 1/8000 sec shutter speed instead of 1/4000 - the idea of having to fiddle with ND filters is a bit annoying, and the Leica shines there with its superior lens speed and fastest shutter speed. The viewfinders: Sony more than adequate, the Leica exceptional, of course. The intuitive feel, handling, menus and lack of buttons is an appeal on the Leica, and the all important very subjective "Leica look" to images in the colour, contrast and life Leica images seem to all have.
    The thing that is tearing at me most is the lens: 28mm on the Leica, 35mm on the Sony. If the Leica had been fitted with a 35mm lens with the 24 megapixel sensor, I would have immediately have been sold, no questions asked. The trouble is, less bokeh on a 28mm than a 35mm at close quarters, and the further away your subject gets, the less bokeh very quickly. 28mm is far less useful as a portrait focal length too. Also, cropability: you will need to crop more severely at your 24 megapixel image to extract close details you may notice in shot, whereas the Sony with its 42.4 megapixels, cropability is immensely powerful an option. But on the flipside you might sometimes miss that extra 7mm of width! I dunno, the decision is so tough and a big choice it is given the prices of these two. I think I am going to have to have a major play with them first and go through the grinder! The Leica is going to be a massive temptation, I know it will be - I have used an M before. But I know I am going to have to apply more than heart to this purchase, and add my head in there too. If there is any further advice from anyone who has been through this painstaking decision, I would really like to hear your experience and your reasons for making the choice you did.
    For the record, I love doing street/ urban, family/ friends, general photography, portrait, occasional landscape (I know I can stitch Sony images if the width proves a problem, but out of camera would be easier in the Leica), some close up, etc. Many thanks again.

    If Sony improves battery life like the Q (400 shots) and adds a touchscreen I will buy one. I'm just afraid if I bought a RX1R2 right now an updated version would come out a few months down the road & the price would go down $500-$700. I'm gonna be honest Chris I thought the Sony from looking @ the two would have a better grip.
    ps: Does anyone know how many Sony has sold since its release of the RX1R2 vs the Leica Q?

    The big question is... will Sony support the RX1R II by way of firmware updates to tweak this body or simply keep releasing more bodies thus bypassing the value of such an imaging tool. I, as an RX1 (mki) owner am very happy with my camera but if we could have only a few percent more focusing speed (and EYE AF) it would mean a lot. These tools are not cheap. PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS SONY!

    • @n0w3lly90
      @n0w3lly90 8 років тому

      I don't think Eye AF and faster focusing are merely firmware upgrades George: they require sensors built onto the imaging sensor, faster IPU and upgraded motors. The RX1 has just the contrast detect AF, the RX1R ii has 399 phase detect points, and that is a physical, not software, difference between the two cameras. Phase detect is faster than contrast detect, hence why the new one has hybrid AF (phase detect for speed, contrast detect for pinpointing)

    I have the sony rx1r and was very happy with it for 3 years. This was the only camera I had. I was frustrated with the AF , so I decided to buy a new camera. I pre-ordered the Leica Q, because of the 28 mm . I do a lot of street photography and always did want to use a 28 mm lens. Now I am a little bit concerned after reading steve huffs sony rx1rii reviews and your video. Is the image quality from the sony rx1rii so much better then the leica Q? I did test the leica Q and I was overwhelmed how the camera did feel in the hand. My budget is around 4000 dollar. Witch one would you choose? Jan

      +Jan Aldelhof The image quality is better Jan but keep in mind there are SOOO many more important things in a camera then image quality. If the Leica Q felt good to you and its in your budget go for it. It takes gorgeous pictures, handles well, and I like the 28mm lens better for composing. The Sony will out shine it in studio tests and tripod work and is a fantastic street camera too but if the Q speaks to you, its the best choice for you. Frankly on paper every other camera is better than Leicas for quality vs price, but its the design, feel, and enjoyment shooting them that make them worth while.

    The battery that this camera uses IS a plus if you also have an RX100 camera as it uses the same battery. Get over it. The batteries are small and light weight. Buy a couple more and carry them with you. The small battery keeps the size and weight down on BOTH of these cameras. I have yet to use more than 2 batteries on either camera on any walkabout. BFD.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 років тому +1

      +Tony Greenfield The example photo was shot with an off-camera strobe. Due to the nature of a leaf shutter, you can achieve very fast sync speed with any strobe. A more common focal-plane shutter will only sync between 1/160-250th sec, unless high speed sync is used, which greatly reduces flash output. Maybe we'll talk about it in an upcoming educational episode.

    Sony has to change their less than optimal battery strategy - way too small batteries they are using. An A7Rii with a 28F2 is so much better of a solution than this camera - even and A7Rii with a metabones IV T with a 40mmF2.8 Canon Pancake (I use both of these setups). Another great review. I was thinking about this camera because of the Leaf Shutter but to many other downsides (no IBIS, battery, handling).

    Jordan, what you shooting the videos with? Sony? and are you trying to shoot continuous autofocus with native lenses? I've been too with mixed results. I'd love to see a video on this, and a comparison of the continuous autofocus across the Sony range and in different light conditions maybe. I use the 28mm f2 by the way. sometimes 16mm pancake switching into super 35 mode.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 років тому

      +PIGMINTFILM This was shot on an A7S II on a Ronin/Jockey rig. I never use autofocus, this was all manually focused. During the take, I just try to maintain a consistent distance from Chris.
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @pigmintfilm256
      @pigmintfilm256 8 років тому

      +TheCameraStoreTV Based on principal Jordan? Have you given it a go? It's actually very good most of the time. I find low light makes it struggle. Face detection can help too if theres not a background crowd of faces of course. I think though that the A7rii actually handles the continuous autofocus better than the a7sii. More focus points I think?
      I know Dave Dugdale is happy enough to use it (when it works) on gimbals, as are some others. Give it a try!

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 років тому

      +PIGMINTFILM The speed of the focus moving has an emotional impact (fast pulls are exciting and intense, slow pulls are more natural) and I don't want the camera making that decision for me. If I needed Chris to move a large distance in the frame, I may consider using AF, but I haven't needed that shot yet.

    How would the Sony RX1R II compare to the Fujifilm X100T? Which would you guys prefer?

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 років тому +2

      +Jorgenfelt The RX1R II is a better camera in every way except for JPEGs and the hybrid viewfinder (if you like it). However, it's a hell of a lot more expensive, so make sure you really want the best tiny full frame camera with a 35mm lens on the market.

    ONCE you leave this cameras 35mm mode you lose the reason to buy this camera.......Use the zoom ( clear view/digital zoom) and lose the cameras attraction.....just buy a quality 35mm lens for your Dslr, much cheaper....You nailed this camera pretty much, great job.....

    excellent, Chris! that battery is so pathetic though. honestly I have great success shooting my eos m cameras. smaller and superb glass. canon 22mm. doesn't get enough credit. tons of videos on my channel of it. but for low light I treasure my powerful 6D!

      +DigitalPatriot, well as long as you shot 24 at 1080p or 60 at 720p in 2016 you're all set! Congrats!

      +DigitalPatriot The M is really good with strobes too. The thing is, if sony made the M, they would have gone nowhere and the Cannonites would have something to really make fun of. I read too much canonrumors but man, you guys are full of it sometimes. Imagine fuji, sony or the m43 makers pushing mirrorless with the same capabilities as any of the M's and they would be out of business.

    • @niccollsvideo
      @niccollsvideo 8 років тому +1

      +DigitalPatriot I know the EOS M gets a lot of crap, and for me it comes down to the AF being slow, and the cost being high. The new M3 improved things quite a bit but its still too much for what you get. I will say though that the 22mm is a sweet lens and Canon always have a great look to their photos. I think what upsets me most is just Canons unwillingness to really enter the interchangeable lens mirrorless market and kick some ass but at least the new G cameras are rocking it pretty well.

    pointless review for pros. perfect for consumer. on field review like the one from the Q will be definitely most appreciated. digital zoom function, auto focus test, auto focus point selection, iso performance at night with bad or mixt lighting and so on.
