I think that items like this and the Mirrors of Life Trapping change the game alot, they don't get rid of the monster, they just shunt the problem down the road and potentially can create a momentary ally to use against bigger threats. Such a cool item. I jury rigged one so that could be carried by my friends character. He is a warlock bound to Asmodeous. He wanted to be a ghost rider style bounty hunter. So now he collects marked souls as they go, and has a devil handler he calls "Acountant". I love the dynamic between the two. It is always empty though. Killed that meta excitement right there.
One of my favorites is having the demon inside be the only remaining eye witness to *world shaking plot event* and the party needing to question it to learn how to prevent *world destroying plot event* - damning a member of the party in the process ;-)
"If the creature is native to any other plane than the one you are one." Demons carrying these lesser flasks to deal with Paladins who crusade into the Abyss lol
I imagine creatures of the prime materium have a resistance to this sort of thing. Though maybe it's just that mortals "go bad"(die and rot) too quickly for outsiders to find these objects useful
@@marvalice3455 this items explanation does not indicate any sort of limitation other than it does not work on creatures native to the plane it is on. Elves can live a long time and dragons can live even longer, but Fey could technically be immortal. Also could be a handy way to deal with a powerful summoned creature in a fight.

With summoning classes like the Alienist being among my favorites, any knowledgeable caster should know that you never summon something without a contingency plan to either banish it, control it or destroy it completely. It also might be a good idea to bring any object to a scryer or magic user who can determine what properties it may have before it’s opened or used.
If D&D introduces summoning classes either it will be part of the mystic class or divided among the other classes. Yet a Barbarian who could summon monsters every time he rages and tap into their powers would be cool.

I so rarely hear or see any Lore that Involves Oerth and Greyhawk. My uncle read the Greyhawk Saga of old city to me as a kid. So that was my introduction to D and D. So an artifact that can turn someone into a murder hobo... or that's how the chaotic evil alignment can be. Yet there's probably several ways to play chaotic evil without being a murder hobo.
Gotta catch them all. (I wonder if we can make more accessible versions of this item, maybe with a CR limit or an easier Wisdom Saving Throw for the one captured, or that only creatures with a lower intelligence score can be caught).

You could also just have a bard go around finding orphanages to tell sad stories at. You're given no time limit or amount of tears needed per child. It's even possible an enchantment spell (even Tasha's hideous laughter), tickling, or even just a little dust in the eye could get you what you need. Going from town to town, city to city seeking out orphans to get the tears from could be an interesting side project or something for some adventurer who is all but retired to do _or_ for a temple running an orphanage to work on slowly over time.

The first signs of the existence of the artifact the players run into may be a suspiciously well-guarded temple with a large connected orphanage or a ruler trying to collect all the orphans in the realm in one location without giving a reason why (because the last thing you want is the wrong people knowing where it is).
I'm curious how the experience inside of these containment artifacts. Is it cramped, are there extra dimensional furnishings (I doubt it). I assume its perhaps just a void.
I heard that . Loved Oerth and Greyhawk. Grew up reading Gygax novels. If you like Oearth and Greyhawk as a setting then you should check out Greyhawk Series : Saga of Old City. love that book. Most of the following Gygax novels are pretty good just a bit mixed up Chronologically. And the ending is a bit subversive but i still will always love Gourd the rogue. Chert,Curley,Gellor and Leyda.

No amount of "good intentions" will save you from intentionally murdering the parents of 1000 children (I'd say that's between 90 and 2000 people depending on family size) for the intent purpose of making them orphans.

Do they need any particular type of storage or is it fine as long as it's salty water that came from orphan eyes? Additionally, if you harvest ordinary child tears than kill the parents do they become orphan tears? I would say no, but that opens a new option. If they only have to be orphans for the harvesting, could you kills someone, harvest their kids tears within a few seconds, than use the cheapest resurrection spell on them? Or does it take a longer amount of time for a child to develop into an orphan? Or alternatively, does resurrecting the parents denature the tears even after they have been harvested? What about adoption? If you take too long and the first batch of orphans grow up does _this_ denature the tears? So many questions....

@@AJPickett it was a planned thing he did it to hide from his wife in game it was an abusivish relationship. She was a barbarian who now has to stay at home with the kids and gets mad when he goes out for adventures.

Iron isn't toxic - but get one with a ceramic liner / glaze inside so any slightly acidic liquids inside don't eat it away (iron rusts REALLY fast when exposed to acids like tomato juice, orange juice, or most soda pops)

Or even limiting it to a particular type of creature. Anything specified by the spell Protection from Evil and Good should work.

Time doesn't pass for the occupant of the flask, so, a wizard could be stuck inside there for Centuries and not age a day.

11 years old, for humans. And yes, I suppose you could.
