    I always thought a ring of attunement would be a great gag magic item, Allows for one additional attunement slot :Requires attunement:

    • @felixrivera895

      But it could also carry some funny rules that allow an elf to pass attunement to a dwarf for restricted items

      Just having an attuned item might be useful though, like a default magic resistance thing provided for being attuned.

      Just give it some crappy side power that nobody would be able to figure out. "You can not be sure, but it seems there may be an additional effect. But It is impossible to tell for sure."
      At some point, the item magically makes a 'kick me' note appear on the wearers back. >.> AND ITS CURSED!

    I made a powerful magical hammer called Voldruumjir which uses "runes" instead of traditional spells or charges. A creature attuned to the hammer uses a spell slot of 1st (lesser rune), 3rd (greater rune) or 5th (master rune) to empower the corresponding set of magical effects the hammer can produce. After the spell slot is expended, the rune doesnt require concentration. Additonally, in order to cast a rune of a higher level, you must first cast one of a lower level.
    (The runes were inspired by warhammer fantasy by the way haha)

    There is only ONE magic item needed by any adventurer: Polk's Magical Flask.(Paul Kidd book) Given to him by a Faerie King, it pours out any liquid upon command word for an unlimited amount of time or until it is corked. Every liquor, every beer, every wine you can imagine. You need not be attuned to anything else.

    Best intro to date! Been awhile since I last commented on your videos, been horribly busy with work.
    Still I recall awhile back on one game session, our DM actually allowed us to attune to more than three magical artifacts. However he did warn us that there will be consequences to attuning to more powerful artifacts if we do this carelessly.
    So what happen... well one of our party members attuned to a few really holy and good items but then as she gripped a mantle to try it on before identifying it. She was cursed because the mantle belonged to an evil god that was an enemy to her patron god. Well... she is a cleric by the way, a battle cleric, and well... her god thought she betrayed her, the evil god was baffled why an acolyte of his enemy god was wearing a mantle with his blessings, and the other artifacts reacted to the evil power at close presence.
    In short... Our war cleric lit up like the America's Fourth of July fireworks display.

    Love the idea of centaur horseshoes needing a command word, or saddles attuning to the mount, not necessarily the rider.

    I’m assuming players can make they’re own magical items? A champaign where the players were gathering ingredients (including very rare and valuable ones) and creating a powerful magical item for themselves sounds like an awesome idea! “To those dangerous abandoned mines to get that rare ore! A hair from a specific unicorn! A magical dragon egg-shaped artifact in this dragons lair! Climb that mountain; we need the large red pearl at the top!” Sounds awesome to me! Maybe they have a special connection to the item(s) they made that lets them benefit more than others from using it?

    • @felixrivera895

      Definitely a high caster type process.
      Rogues are already inclined to potions and poisons as are Warlocks.
      Druids, Clerics, Wizards, and Sorcerers would be very inclined towards rituals and processes that imbue some of their abilities into an item.
      Druids would be master staff and wand makers, and dabble into magic wooden shields. Clerics would make amulets, talismans, and armor over days through prayer and ritual. Sorcerers would be the best at making some of the most unique wonderous items through a twist of thought and weave. Wizard colleges 100% have no reason Not to make a profit by selling common magic items and janky uncommon items made by their students, so not only would Wizards be capable of making just about any magic item with time and practice, but they'd come equipt with things like self repairing clothes and minor wands.
      Depending on the level of magic in the world characters might even learn to create stronger items, though with janky rolls the item could end up cursed.
      Also, I imagine that Wizards would specialize by their college. No self respecting Illusion Wizard would be without a deck of illusions made by their own hand. Any Conjuration Wizard would be remiss if they were experimenting with making a Bag of Holding and they haven't mastered the basics of the common magic spice pouch

  • @spikegilfer1997
    @spikegilfer1997 6 років тому +7

    I feel like instead of just having three slots, no ifs, ands, or buts, There should be a larger pool, (That increases with level.) but some items are more costly than others.
    For example: In the Chaotic Card game you had a deck of twenty attack cards. The best attacks would cost five points, while some cost 0 points but were basically stocking-stuffers. A Staff of the Magi or equivalent would be a five, whereas something like boots of levitation would be a 0 or a 1, a wand of fire-balls would be a 2 or a 3. (Not exact numbers, but a general idea.)
    Working from that, you could have characters get discounts to attuning different kinds of items. So a Red Dragon Sorcerer spends one less attunement point on the aforementioned wand of fire-balls. Perhaps that would come at the cost of a higher attunement price for frost-based magic?
    Or vary the attunement cost on whether the character class counts as Martial, Divine, Stealthy, Arcane, etc. So a wizard could have an axe enchanted to cast Tenser's Transformation when the command word is used, but because the physical nature is so opposite of what a wizard normally does it would be pretty costly.
    Edit: As for powerful character getting more attunement slots in general? I think the more your character grows in strength the more it becomes a staple of the world, opposed to an adventures. I'm not saying you get to level fifteen and then throw the whole damn thing out the window though.

      @spikegilfer1997 6 років тому +1

      @@commenter1430 I've just been frustrated by the idea of lower-key magical items never getting used once a straight upgrade is found. Boots of Levitation? Who's going to use them when they take a third of your attuned slots and the Wings of Flying are better nine times out of ten? Most people will use the Wings of Flying even with this alternative system in play, it just creates a benefit for using a niche item for people who would rather have a slower vertical move speed in exchange for another ring.
      The additional ideas were just things I came up with on the spot, so whether they would work is pretty hit or miss.

    I would say that attunement is a pretty good way to make a limitation for magic items easily workable into fluff. And honestly, after one seen 3.5e artificers, just covered under amount of magic items that is ridiculous even for "magical engineer" concept. To be fair, Unearthed Arcana Artificer does grant bonus attunement slots.
    And, funny you mention The Net Libram of Random Magical Effects. This great netbook, as they were called, was made back in good old 2e, when arcane spellcaster was "one with the book". As it is no longer true, one has to be more creative with many effects that target caster's spellbook. Despite that, I made it into a simple program that rolls for effect, amount, and escape clause anyway. I reserve it for natural 1 and 20 in wild magic areas.

    Never did like Attunement. Other versions had like alignment restrictions, class restrictions, or a maximum number of items per limb with no duplicate effects (IE two rings of protection +1 just grant one, null the other.), and so on and so forth. Attunement seems restrictive and laughably bad in ham-string'ing people.

    • @nullpoint3346
      @nullpoint3346 6 років тому +2

      Attunement should only be used on artifacts or extremely high level items. *(Continuation Pending)*
      The "multiple same item limit" makes sense, but I only use it for sufficiently powerful items 18 +1 rings vs 1 +18 ring set up. (I allow multiple rings on one finger under specific conditions, namely other rings effects) (9+2,6+3,3+6) The point here is that if you have the (whatever) power you need from one you might as well swap out to expand your "effect capacity".
      And items of higher quality than that one ring will require attunement regardless, 'ell, the ring itself might need it.

All thanks to 'A very attentive individual'
      On a more serious note. I suspect the key reason for attunement, is to prevent loot hoarding by 1 member of the group. Or a Rouge killing or at least stealing a couple of rings, a weapon, armor and a glove from their fellow players. As long as the GM have given the dude 3, the motivation to steal more will at least be a bit lower.

    People seem to see attunement as just balancing, which it is, but in terms of lore, you are kind of making the magic item a part of you. It is where the sentient magic item's become of interest, AJ mentioned that character learns some things about the item, so the item can learn things about the character. A cursed item is like a virus.
    If 3 does not seem enough, I did make something like a series of magic item's that might take up only one attunement slot.
    Someone else mentioned a joke of a magic item that gives an attunement slot when attuned, but that gives me an idea. In truth you would not be attuned to it, the second item is attuned to the first item, which if sentient could choosing the effect works or not. I imagine a more useful version that could give 2 attunement slots, which gives a play a total of 4 slots. Sounds like only a good thing, until you realise you are not just attuned to it, but it is sentient and is attuned to the player with one of its own slots. The two slots the item gives to the player are its other two attunement slots, that the item could choose whether to give to the character. The player then has to placate the magic item's whims to get its benefits of extra slots.... this is of course before you reveal further something like it is a phylactery.

      I think its less about balance really, and more about preventing one player from stealing and nabbing all the good stuff for themselves. Ok genius, you have 10 rings now. But you can only use 3 so f you. Give those back to your party members right this instant young man.

    These rules definitely need a little tweaking.
    I'd want to track the understanding of the item separate from the spiritual link, both of which should be progressive as opposed to on/off.
    I definitely want there to be a chance that an item taken stealthily from an adversary too powerful to face in combat would still be under the influence of that entity, and I'd want there to be a potential for that influence to spread to the poorsoul who was courageous enough to link themself to it, hell maybe an item could have been crafted with the soul purpose that whoever uses it would have their lifeforce drained to restore the very enemy they had to slay in order to get the item in the first place.
    Three huh guess I wouldn't ask someone else to keep track of a thousand so this ones probably in there to spare the gm the extra leg work, but heres how I'd do it the weakest level of familiarity with an object would be tied to your intellect or magical proficiency just like double it or something, medium level tied to your chakra so you can have seven at that level(unless you're something funny then you get a funny amount) then the final level of attunment would actually be determined by the object itself you get 23 points to work with no negotiating on that but the average item costs 7(technically the average item wouldn't required this tear but the average legendary item would cost 7) weaker ones cost less stronger ones cost more, but at any rate you would typically be able to understand about three, I might even add items that have a number that could never be used, in fact every powerful demon should have atleast a few un-understandable relics.
    I'm thinking sorcerers dragonborn genasi and litches should all get exta mojo. Can I say that dragonborn should have extra chakra.
    So confused about warforged would they be beter or worse at this stuff you could argue that their whole nature is something akin to attunment so they should do it as easily as breathing but you could counter argue that they're using up their slots just keeping themselves in working order.
    I'm calling it on modrons through modrons are definitely worse do they even have chakra.
    Oh and one nap being all it takes oh excuse me two naps, absolutely not I mean sure for a basic understanding maybe but full familiarity should take a flash forward of several years or at least a workout montage and some raw eggs.

      Homebrew the item and remove the attunement requirement. Then players can use the item without attuning, and have the benefits properly displayed on their sheet. Takes about 3 clicks. "Create homebrew item"-"make copy of magic item"-"Requires attunement? (uncheck)"-"Save". Rename it to something different, or at least add "Attunement free". Players should then be able to find the item by searching for it.

      @@ClanIceFyre You can homebrew copyrighted material as much as you like, so long as its private (not shared publicly) For instance, if you own the DMG physically, and don't want to purchase it on dndbeyond, you can homebrew all the magic items into the system for you and your players. You just can't share them and they won't display in site navigation tools.
      These items will display in the item search bar in the character sheet. If you are a dungeon master, the items will display for players in your campaigns. To get them to show up after creating them, you have to go to the first page of the character creation tool, and click to allow "homebrew content". Existing characters can also access this page in their "edit character" option.
      Hope this helps.

    Can playing characters make intelligent weapon

    • @JohnA...
      @JohnA... 5 років тому

      Well they are certainly capable of making dumb weapons...
      But in the game there is no reason why a character couldn't make a sentient weapon, it would just be very expensive, time consuming, and complicated. As a DM you might have to have a full campaign just for them to find the items and information needed to do it as well as the skill to create the weapon to start. Or you might have multiple characters working together towards it because its unlikely that your wizard (who will probably preform the binding ritual, or whatever to create the sentience in the weapon) will also be the one who is crafting the physical weapon (something better suited for a warrior or other physical endowed character class).
      Something to keep in mind is that most sentient weapons/items are typically morally ambivalent, corrupt, or outright evil, this could have to do with how it is created or that you basically have to trap an intelligent being into an item and that can't be good for your mental health. Additionally they tend to have the power to take over people if the person isn't strong willed enough to control the item, making them quite dangerous.
      If you are however running an evil campaign this might be quite good in the higher levels.

    • @grimjudgment6527

      Well to be fair, the items used are more abstract for certain spells than others.
      The two copper rods may be a reference to lichtenberg (I think I spelled it right) figures where you put two nails into a piece of wood on each side, wet it and it burns capillaries into the wood. It may also use copper because it's one of the best conductors of electricity.

    I have never really liked the attunement system in this incarnation mostly because if you take a look through all the magic items in the book on what does and doesn't require attunement it is kind of wonky. All armors of resistance require attunement when in theory will have much less of an impact on game balance in comparison to + armors. Having a +1 AC will come into effect far more frequently then having resistence to a specific energy type unless there is a theme to your campaign that makes that energy type much more prevalent.
    Then you have cases like Armor of Poison Resistance requires attunement which gives your resistance to poison while a Periapt of Proof Against Poison doesn't require attunement but just makes your straight up immune to poison damage and condition. It makes no sense how the magic item with the lesser effect requires attunement while the item with a greater effect doesn't for some arbitrary reason. Granted the fact that the poison resistance armor is magical so can't be destroyed as easily but if you were to get magic armor with some silly effect that doesn't effect the game in anyway like you can make it sparkle whenever you felt like and the periapt you would have a much greater effect for essentially no cost.
    Then you have the War Wizard/Pact keeper sticks that are like + weapons but they don't add to damage just the to hit. They are more or less the caster version of + weapons but for some reason require attunement. Now yes they do add in extra effects like increase to spell save dc or ignore half cover but those additional effects really give as much as + to damage. This is even more prevalent for classes that can make multiple attacks. A level 20 fight with 4 attacks essentially is getting an extra 12 points of damage a round from a +3 weapon if they hit all 4 times. Which is highly likely due to the bounded accuracy system that makes it so enemy ACs above 20 are extremely rare and really not that hard to hit with a semi optimized build.
    Then you have some items like Ioun Stones which can be destroyed or taken away and really why wouldn't a semi intelligent enemy attempt to take/destroy the shiny rock spinning around your head, it is obviously magical. Granted it is a difficult task at a AC 24/DC 24 acrobatics check to hit or take it but with only 10 hit points and resistance to everything (which effectively makes it 20 maybe 21 hit points) it really isn't that difficult to destroy at much higher levels of play. Most CR 5 creatures have anywhere from a +6 to +8 to hit with multiple attacks or one attack that deals a lot of damage making it plausible for tier 2 creatures to take it away or destroy it. Yet every Ioun Stone requires attunement when the chances of it being taken or destroyed become much more likely the higher level you are. Honestly a magic item that has the chance of being taken or destroyed seems like enough of a counter balance to not require attunement.
    Now I do think that requiring attunement for some magical items does make sense for in some cases as to draw upon the full power of the item you must attach a small chunk of your solo or essence to it. This prevents people from just taking the big bads obviously magical weapon and using it against them to full effect so in that regard it does balance the game. Just in the aspect of limiting people to just 3 attunable magical items because the effects of some items are just to powerful and you don't need them excuse kind of falls flat on its face once you look deeply into all aspects of it from comparing individual items with similar effects to the actual math of the game.

    • @sandeman1776
      @sandeman1776 5 років тому

      Honestly, I played the Pre-WOTC AD&D and alot of these rules simply wouldn't have flown. You NEEDED to have a magical arsenal at high levels if you wanted to do some epic level stuff. The class xp system was much more rigorous and rewarding. I love watching Critical Role, but Attunement is one of the dumbest things. I guess it goes in with WOTC's attempt at streamlining the game to a video game level of mass production. I don't know how many of the new generation of players knows about the old game, but I bet you'd be amazed. Yes, the math was sideways (if not backwards at times) but the possibilities were much greater. It seems like they bumped up the Hit points and DPS to give the game a more inflated feel. I don't have so much a problem with skill checks and saving throws are borderline to me. Combat seems inflated and xp is nerfed. Drastically. But I'd put my AD&D 22nd level mage/16th level fighter against any character from 5e. "Streamlined" doesn't mean better. It just means easier. I just can't bring myself to update to 5e.

    Magic item Attunement is such a crappy game mechanic. Supposedly, it's there for balance reasons but that's nonsense. Balance is maintained by the dungeon master. Also, why only 3 magic items for everybody? It seems to me that that kind of stuff should vary by class and also very with intelligence, charisma and wisdom. Attunement is there for half ass DM's who can't maintain balance themselves and rather than learn balance they Nerf the game for themselves and their players. It's sad.

      So if your characters get frisky with their magic items you're either gonna prevent them from aquiring more of them, limiting their fun and rewards, or you're going to forcibly remove/have them sacrifice their magic items when You decide they're too strong for the good of the game?
      It sounds like this was a halfassed complaint that didn't take into consideration that limitations and easly understood rules are to the benefit of the players and dm, especially the dm who has plenty to manage without having to stop and worry every time they want to reward their players.
      Not to mention if the dm wants to make the party more powerful around the attunement rule they can just give out non-attuned items.

    I actually don't like 5th Ed. attunement or the concentration by most spells. Much prefer playing Pathfinder, as no one plays 3.5 ed. anymore. I started with the blue book and the paper chits [for dice] that the game came with. There were no dice that I knew of at that time other than your standard six sided. As far as I'm concerned the game has gone downhill since first edition, where the casters power was basically unlimited -no dice caps on the spells, just your level to determine power [a 25th level fireball did 25 die 6 damage].
