Riley’s stint at USC so far is showing he is not a great program builder. He was handed the keys at an Oklahoma program that was in prime condition. USC was a disaster and he hasn’t been able to fix it even with the talent he has brought in. Riley is an amazing offensive coach, but he is not an elite head coach.
he is not an elite offensive coach. his scheme has flaws all over it, which is why he has OL, WR, TEs, QBs and RBs leaving. He is a complete fraud, and I told USC fans this 3 years ago. He has proven me correct.
He is not an elite oc, OUs players made him look, that way, after stoops players graduated things started going down hill fast, all that kept his head above water was the weido Caleb Williams, period
@@jamesdo3086 the portal giveth and the portal taketh away.....Quick fix is very real now. October 18, 2025 is 10 months away. Lots of time to stack the roster..!!
It's a new era....NIL has changed everything. The schools that adapt and figure it out, will be able to retain players. These elite kids want to get paid. SC needs to hire an NFL cap expert as a consultant to manage all NIL deals. The NCAA also needs to regulate and cap NIL deals for every position. It's like the wild, wild west right now. NIL deals should be signed for a mandatory two years. The portal is both a blessing and a hindrance right now- it needs to be fixed. I don't blame Riley for not retaining players for two reasons- 1) The executive reasoning for all these athletes has not fully developed yet. Most of these athletes are prone to making impulsive, spur of the moment decisions because of their age. Whether or not they are being misled into making uninformed decisions- is another factor as well. This has nothing to do with coaching. 2) The athletic department needs to assign a mental health professional (sports therapist) to every athlete, to gauge their commitment and maturity level. This could help determine whether the player is going to take his experience @ USC seriously or whether he is just going on an audition with the intent of getting more money from a rival school in year 2? The moves I would make regarding any NIL deal would be to have a cap based on position and have everyone sign a two year minimum deal. No player should be able to transfer to more than 2 schools during his college career. It's going to be interesting how the fix all this? I think Riley will get it right and we'll be back on top either next year or the year after. One good thing about the portal, is that things can change quickly in the short term. Stay positive.

@@trglitzmusic927 They can't do any of those things. It is illegal. Do you think it would have gotten this far if they could have stopped it? The days of the NCAA running roughshod over players is over. Try to grasp that concept.
OU alumn and fan here and not going to mention Riley, lol. Grew up loving CFB. I remember especially John McKay at USC back in the day as a kid. Seeing The Coliseum in LA on those mild winter days and evenings seemed like paradise lol. I hope USC eventually recovers and is on the national stage again. 👍🏈
Riley has been a disappointment, to say the least. We all had high hopes for him turning SC back into a National Powerhouse. One can argue there was a lot to fix and losing Duce, Joyner, and Branch is a fallout of the current model with the portal and NIL. But he has No excuse not to be recruiting LA and SoCal. That to me is coaching malpractice.

Too many stars and not enough 🏈🏈🏈 to go around. Makai Lemon was the Robin to Malachi's Batman. We're seeing who the better player has been. You can't run the ball the way USC did and have multiple receivers with 80+ catches. Not when you have legit 5 WR that could play for any other team.
Almost every year SC has had a great receiver on the sideline while another one drops passes. I started tracking this before Riley when Pittman rarely played early in his SC career. Riley’s first year was Rice dropping passes until he became legit during the Bowl game. Kyle Ford was catching almost everything - including would be picks. This year Branch got consistent reps despite drops. Jakobi Lane had less receptions and 9 TDs to Branch’s 1. Ford had less than half the snaps and had 2 TDs. I realize that some of it has to do with the position since Lane and Ford are both Z.
I knew this was going to happen. Lincoln O’Reilly’s problem when he was at Oklahoma was there was zero physicality and culture. Lincoln inherited a legendary Bob Stoops era program rode that for as long as he could. He was never really capable of rebuilding a program. He only went to USC for money and to avoid the SEC.

USC may as well flush 10m down the drain every year.
Nah... This ain't a hot take. The cupboard isn't bare and Lincoln explained he felt like he was overpaying for some of these 5* kids. I liked Duece tho.
JD - Just wrong about the Branch loss. Zach is really limited and LR had to force it to him. This caused problems in the receiver room. Addition by subtraction. Targeting other players will improve the team. Duce was a loss, but he needs development to be what he can be. All the changes going on at USC are moving them forward. Defense will be better next year. Offense will be better due to better QB play. SC took Penn State and Notre Dame to the finish line. USC recruiting in So Cal is taking a step forward in 2026 and going to get on track. It looks like a train wreck, but is really more like a forest fire clearing out the forest, so it can be better. Agree 100% about needing to get buy-in and passion within the team.
