doesn't really look that much better. the overexposed one looks just fine as is in this case

thats not the point. I tried this in rooms with large windows and outside view. In never ever blendet two exposures together that fast in my life!! Great trick in a lot of situations!

Alex, not sure how you can possibly think this. This is not by any means a quality image but it is infinitely better with the extremely blown out highlights somewhat reined in. While it won't work in situations where more details is required, (views outside a window for example) it's handy for retrieving info from blown out lamps, etc. Far from high quality as I said, but in a pinch, a quick and dirty improvement.

seems to me luminance masks might do a better job with this and not compromise the fidelity of the image rather than simple masking.
almost feels as if the blend if options muddy up the image

This is not a new technique. I recall using double exposure shooting with 4x5 film in the early '90s. The technique is the same, the tools are different.

great tuts, thanks! btw hold shift while dragging one image upper the second and it will be automatically placed at the center of canvas

were the under and over exposed pictures taken on purpose to create the blending effect?

Yes. This works great to bring out the exterior coloring in windows. I use it all the time since learning of this technique 2 weeks ago.
