I remember it well. A Sunderland steward got arrested for battling with Newcastle fans in a melee down in the Roker End/Clock Stand corner of the pitch after the penalty. The only time I've ever seen a steward get nicked by the polis.
He never turned up for both Play Off Legs. Very disappointing from him. Sunderland were the better side, but we'd go on to have a glorious time 2 years later
Remember this game well was sat in the main stand at the end where the pen was, mental how much the game has changed since then you'd get jailed for a foul like that these days lol
Sunderland won 2-0, somehow got promoted despite losing the final, got relegated the following season and lived in Newcastle's shadow since. Although I suspect you already know this.
Sunderland beat the geordie mag fuck ups 2-0 and few minutes from the end newcastle fans invaded pitch to try and have the game stopped to get a replay. Ha ha spoilt little maggots were beaten fair and square.
Listen to the Mackems moaning when they only gained one play off promotion because Swindon were punished for financial misdemeanours. They had the cheek to belittle Burton Albion and now in the Third Tier with them.....
Actually howling here. I remember Wembley. It could have been 8-0 to Swindon! Nowt to brag about really. Especially the following seasons relegation and the 4 relegations that have followed.
Was there Man U muppet, nobody touched me and me 2 pals, we were only 15/16 probably why the Seaburn Casualties left us alone, ready for a beating outside
Enjoy yourselves, you’ve been to many a promotion/relegation party, stick to mocking your derby rivals the smog monsters. We are busy in the big league
I was 12. In the sunderland paddock as I couldn't get a ticket for the away end. Within 15 mins we were escorted to the away end when trouble broke out. Fearless back then! Good days.

I'll never forget Aitken sticking his fist up too the Fulwell end after the save. Such a shame it came back to bite him on the arse in the 2nd leg 🤣

Duffing the penalty made the return leg that much sweeter 👌
Indeed. As did NUFC almost going into Division 3 and bankrupt 2 years later to then crack on and be in Europe another 2 years later. Funny old game.
Best derby in the country

as a neutral looked a v dodgy penalty but it should surely have been retaken. newcastle no. 4 starts his run up before the penalty taker.
Yeah mate was a generous penalty. Great clip thanks for uploading
Was me n 2 of me pals we were only 15/16… smb
Good thing the Toon no 4 (Roy Aitken) was in the way of Budgie there, looked like he was ready to lamp Hardiman for that kick in the head
Aye, I think we (NUFC) were very premature! It worked out well in the end though ;-)
two mags going menta in the fulklwell when the penalty saved - class. If the makems had done that at st james's theyd have claimed they took the end!!
I was in the Gallowgate with a few mates. for the reply, much better game

Stimson won the ball for me. The direction of the ball certainly suggests so anyway.

@@emmapender6143 wow. Very adult
The penalty should have been re taken a newcastle player left encroached the area before the ball was struck

Erm...2 caught on camera celebrating. They not count? 🤔😂
