I saw your comment two years late , but here's the different ways of how he died: First, in both the novel and Donghua, WWX had gone to nightless city after they killed Wen Ning (supposedly) and Wen Qing, Jiang Yanli came there and died, WWX only then truly lost control and killed most of whom were there, then he lost his conscience and so LWJ helped him to flee. After 3 months of JYL death, Jiang Cheng, along with the other sect leaders and disciples, merged on the burial mounds in what we call 'the 1st siege of BM' and started killing the remaining Wens. So it's either that WWX destroyed the Stygian tiger amulet knowing it will have a backlash and kill him, or HE was the one to order his corpses army to kill him. (IN HERE, Jiang Wanyin was thought to be the one to kill him because he had stabbed WWX in his abdomen just right before WWX pushed him away to be buried under the corpses eating him alive) In the cql (live action) WWX had jumped off a hill, and Jiang Wanyin was rumoured to kill him because he had stabbed the rock LWJ was leaning on while holding on Wei Ying. Unlike novel and donghua, in the drama, the events of nightless city, jiang Yanli death and WWX's death all happened in one day/night. Either way, in all versions, it's portrayed that WWX suicided, killed himself however the way.
