  • I have been planning on doing this timing chain and clutch job for a year or so now on the Golf but had to get various other projects finished first such as building a car port for the car I had stored in the garage, and sorting some storage space out for the parts as I remove them. I'm no mechanic and only have DIY experience but as I felt like a challenge and as I don't daily the car I thought why not.
I was always planning on documenting the video anyway and keeping it for reference so I thought why not just do a little bit of editing and upload it to UA-cam? Hopefully someone will find this useful to see perhaps what I've done, where I went wrong and how difficult it was to help them decide if they want to have a go at this themselves.
I'll be posting part numbers and so on in the description as I use them. Please feel free to offer any advice or have any suggestions as I say I'm no mechanic and so any constructive advice is greatly appreciated.
This part is removal of chains and fitting of new plastic chain guides.

I just wanted to drop a HUGE THANK YOU comment. My son just bought a used Mk 5 R32, and it needs this job done. Your videos have been incredibly helpful for him in understanding what needs to be done, and how to do it correctly. Your videos have been incredibly helpful.

Hats off to you, I have a 2006 R32 with 80k on the clock and was contemplating having a go at the chain but after watching all 8 parts I don’t think I’d have the balls so well done and I look forward to seeing it go back together. Also if you have any snags during the rebuild with the odd hose, clip, electrical connectors I’d be happy to photograph mine for you

Much appreciated. It's all back together at this stage and the actual chain part of the job went fine, done a first start and so on. I'd say if you have a bit of mechanical common sense and some time it's totally doable. I was a bit daunted by it at first I'd never even done a clutch but it's actually not that bad. The main thing are to have is all the info regarding timing and torques all written down to hand, and secondly to also be methodical storing parts ensure you catalogue everything for the rebuild. The rebuild itself was very quick.

Just the black liquid gasket stuff, you can also get it from VW its what engine is put together with in the first place. You will see that you will have to clean all the old stuff off when you get to that stage.
