Hello, I'm from South Korea. In the early 1980's, The New Avengers had been aired on South Korea. This was my favorite TV show in my childhood. I still remember a lot of episodes.
Hello to South Korea from the UK , wonderful to hear from you !! Its amazing to know where these shows were exported too. Thanks ever so much for your comment and taking the time to write it and watching my little channel. All the very best Crab 🦀
Just wanted to say as a cult TV lover I adore your channel!!! So insightful, polished delivery, intelligent reviews - an absolute delight, a filet mignon in the abyss of excrement that is UA-cam film reviewing... After watching the Hammer Horror episode I am hooked and subscribed already!! Keep it up!!
@@TheFlyingAudiophile Thank you very much it's for such people as yourself this channel is made for. I have, later episodes, focussed on Amicus productions which may be of interest. Truly delighted. Very best Crab 🦀🍏
In moi opinion FROM THE EARLY SERIES TO NEW SERIES OF THE AVENGERS WILL ALWAYS BE A CLASSIC MASTERPIECE THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE ACTORS & ACTRESS 🎩👑😉👍💪🥰
I certainly echo that sentiment Mr Waller - weren't they glorious. I still mourn for Dame Diana now - I hate it when our heroes pass away so I aim to keep them alive on my little channel. A place in our hearts for evermore . Best, Crab x
Another fine review! I appreciate how you present the realities of making a television series, positive & negative. An argument at the time was that The New Avengers was too dramatic &, to be frank, too dull. I think, though, that a lot of that perception has to do with it's initial broadcast on American television. For its first run in the US, this brand new series was screened as the CBS Late Movie in a 70 minute slot that started at 11:30 pm...! I'm a fan of the show & its stars (all of them, every series), but I have to tell you it was difficult to stay alert until 1 o'clock in the morning, with at least double the amount of commercials at every break. It broke any tension or suspense, & when a fight or action scene finally happened, it seemed like it was over before it had begun. CBS was happy - they regularly touted the show's performance and ratings. They eventually even resurrected reruns of the original Avengers series in the same time-slot, rather than order a new batch of New Avengers episodes, sadly. Of course, on home video & it plays MUCH better in its 50 minute, commercial free glory. One quibble (& it isn't huge, I hope) is that I really enjoyed "Emily" (& the other Canadian episodes "Complex" & "Forward Base"). I found "Trap" to be the hands down worst episode of the entire series, but that's just me. I think the producers this time around took a calculated risk making the series more international & realistic. Brian Clemens said as much, indicating the desire was to reach a larger audience than before. Unfortunately, a big selling point of the original series was the very British setting. I personally didn't want our heroes to rely on other agencies, French, Canadian or American, & certainly didn't need to see them anywhere but England. Anyway, great job putting together such a concise overview. Your selection of clips, still photos & other illustrations keep things rolling along. I'll be catching up with more of your channel's reviews as time permits!
Fabulous! Well researched and informative - and a great script allied with a marvelous delivery - you have a little gem of a channel - happily subscribed, and shared far and wide!
The 2 most athletic Steed partners are of course first Blackman. As a State sider who only saw and loved the Rigg episodes the second partner that was the most surprising is Lumley! And, can she run, and in high heels too. No leather suit as climbs fences and hurtles obstacles. And, yes she did most of her own stunts. Both Rigg and Macnee used stunt doubles. And, in the B & W episodes they used a male stunt double for Rigg!
@@royandjacqueline1294 Hello, not sure why you contacted me as I never contacted you. Yes I am a fan of New Avengers. Not sure how to answer your question?
I’m really enjoying your videos, very well put together and they bring back a lot of memories and highlight how good a lot of these series were As a suggestion for a future subject - how about’The Onedin Line’? A rock solid BBC series from the Seventies
Aweeeee, thank you Mondasian - I will hope to cover at least one drama this season as we haven't looked again at a purely dramatic series since take three girls. Will definately take this into consideration if not now in the future. The Onedin Line - blimey - my Nan and Mum used to stay in for that series whilst my grandad and Dad went for a pint ! Very popular. Thanks for the recommendation Mondasian - as grateful as always - Best - Crab 😉
I saw The New Avengers long before I saw the original series. New Avengers was rerun on BBC2 on weekday afternoons in the mid 90s, if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed it at the time and never missed an episode.
I think I did the same. What a reward it was to find the original series. I think I caught the new Avengers in the late 80's on our local t.v Station- was gutted as they didn't show all of them until satellite t.v in the 1990's then I was in my element. Best 🦀
Wonderful! Great research and commentary! I remember as a school boy in 1976 being annoyed Gambit was drafted in to take away too much attention from the glorious Steed!
I was the same and was anti gambit for a while but then the dyamics just seem to work and Steed was a bit stout by '76. The New Avengers was repeated in the late 80's regionally and along with The Champions were my favourites. Although there wasnt too many channels we didnt do too badly. Channel 4 was a god send showing The Avengers, The Prisoner and The Owl Service and then early satellite tv Bravo, UK Gold , we had the best times and at the right age too. 🦀😄
Is a video on the Prisoner planned? It's a bizarre series and would like to see a analysis on it. Great work though I've never seen the avengers but I do like a bit of spy drama and action.
Thank you for your comment YC, The Prisoner does indeed seem most appropriate for LLALA, I have no plans currently but will most certainly research it and view it again for potentially next season. I welcome suggestions and if I have the source material I will definately mould a review for it. I never really got into The Prisoner which is surprising but I have revisited a lot of programmes and movies since creating these programmes and as my viewers have learned so much and enjoyed them more on a second viewing so The Prisoner may be one of those. I also suggest a series called The Champions which you may enjoy. The Avengers is must see TV that nails the essence of the 60's and British eccentricity albeit through rose tinted spectacles. I would heartily recommend you give the Diana Rigg monochrome season a go but am prejudicial in my advice as this is/was my favourite season but all of them are good. The Cathy Gale stories are more drier due to budget and restrictions as we are talking TV nearly 60 years ago but they also have some decent examples of cultness. I will look into the Prisoner for sure. Enjoy. Crab
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN You can find The Prisoner on Shout Factory TV on the internet for free, remastered and looking great - and both The Avengers and The New Avengers can be found on the Russian video sharing site OK*dot*ru - along with many, many other films and TV series - though you may have to hunt for versions in English that haven't been redubbed - sometimes highly amusingly - into Russian, or Hindi or Turkish and even Arabic... enjoy!
I like the series. Nothing will ever match those classic Emma Peel episodes, but the New Avengers was a good show and a lot of fun. Definitley helped writers like Brian Clemons stayed on.
It was a massive endeavour especially trying to bring back such a popular, iconic show in a different time but it adapted so well. As I was discussing with another subscriber it's a shame this hasn't been given the blu ray treatment. I prefer the first to the 2nd series of T.N.A it's more grittier and although the opening credits aren't as stylised as the lion - the montage of clips with that cracking bit of 70's funk is perfection. I loved this show immensely. 🦀
After shooting a French champagne advert in 1975. Brian Clements asked Diana Rigg if she wanted to come back and play the role of Emma Peel again for the entire series of The Avengers. Diana Rigg said no for a return of role of Emma Peel. This is well before the episode called the Last of the Cybernauts. Again, she asked to play Emma Peel as one off special appearance, but a fee could not be agreed on. Also, when Diana turned down a come back to The Avengers. That was going to be the title of the series. So Brian Clements asked Linda Thornson to come back to play the role of Tara King again for the entire series of The Avengers, Linda Thornson said no. This left Brian Clements thinking he had to start a fresh with an idea. To change the title from The Avengers to New Avengers with in mind casting 2 more assistance to Patrick Macnee. In which The New Avengers would be totally different to The Avengers' 1960's series. Now, if Diana Rigg or Linda Thornson reprise their role, then the Avengers would have taken off. Instead of giving the Title of The New Avengers, it just would be The Avengers or Return of The Avengers would have worked.
Thank you for filling in a few more gaps. Maybe Rigg was due to star in K is for Kill in a guest role as she does feature in it but only in the form of a clip from an original 1967 Avengers episode. It's a shame. Many actors and actresses seem to close the curtains on their previous series. It would have been lovely to see her pop up again or Thorson for sure. I guess the only one to re-appear was Ian Hendry but he wasn't Keel. Dream episode would have been all The Avengers returning and joining the New to combat intercrime. Have a great Christmas and New Year thanks for taking the time to comment. Best 🦀
I think anyone expecting the original would have been disappointed however if people go into it with an open mind then they wouldnt as both series are representative of the decade and do it with style - New was rawer but it still had style in its own way . Glad you enjoyed it. Theres some doofers but other classics. The like of which we will never see again - a crying shame. Thanks for your comment . Crab
The New Avengers is very much the bridge between the Avengers and the Professionals, moving from the fantasy of the 60's to a more gritty realism of the late 70's. Great review.
I still enjoy watching this series. Although it's a bit hit and miss, there are some very good episodes: The Midas Touch, Cat Amongst the Pigeons, Faces, Sleeper, and Angels of Death. Also, The fantastic car chase in Cornwall, at the start of The Lion and the Unicorn . And i love Purdy with longer hair at the start of Emily, in the abandoned fairground.
I love those episodes you mention. Especially the midas touch - good premise. Eagles Nest is a corker - Peter Cushing, Nasty Nazis and Purdey kicking butt in a green leotard - what more could you possibly ask for. :) Crab
By the time the four Canadian episodes came to be shot, both Clemens and Fennell weee were already into pre-production on The Professionals and the rest, as they say, is history…
I have often find it interesting how many "Avengers" actors ended up in Bond films. Many know Dame Diana Rigg starred in OHMSS. She is frequently considered the best Bond girl of all time, but many people don't know that Joanna Lumley was also in OHMSS one of Telly Savalas allergy "patients".
I think it's also because Diana Rigg was one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the big and small screen. A woman who balanced feminity and emancipation perfectly. She was stunning.
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN I still have a crush on the now dead Dame Diana Rigg. I was only a youg teen when the Emma Peel "Avengers" was originally aired, mainly I remember the show being hard to find. Luckily the Diana Rigg episodes were filmed on 35mm so the still available shows are of good quality. I just watched "The hour that never was" last night after reading that the Beatles were also Emma Peel fans and the album cover for "Abbey Road" was inspired by that episode's runway scene. I know Paul Mccartney in 1967 dropped off a newly released copy of "Sgt Pepper" and told DR "I just wanted to meet you:
I thought one of the reasons they added Gambit was the realization that Steed couldn't be asked to do some of the fight scenes or more rigorous action sequences. I thought the first season was fine, and like a couple of the episodes from season 2. I wasn't surprised that the series was cancelled. With iffy financing it was doomed.
Shame it ended on a low note but i am glad they commissioned it though. Surprised it hasnt got a blu ray release with it shot on film it would be ideal. Guess its rights or low market appeal. Thanks for your comment. Take care 🦀
Oh no ! I didn't know there was a new avengers adventure kit but I have , in the attic somewhere, a jigsaw puzzle and a board game - must dig them out sometime - the artwork is pleasingly lurid. Best - Crab🦀
Great video, me and my school friend Zachary were obsessed with New Avengers and would act out scenes from the show,he always wanted to be Purdey and so did I so we took turns, apart from the episode with Caroline Munro when we both wanted to be her!
Wonderful nostalgia - thank you for sharing them with us all. Its cool how our heroes influence us as children. I always used to want to be Van Helsing as a child. We used to play in the road and i used to chase my friends as vampires and my best mate Darren used to be Dracula we even used to play in the churchyard and do scenes with our own sharpened stakes made from fence posts - something unbelievable now but life was so free back then. Also recall doing the Avengers on the beach with my mate Mark wanting to be Emma Peel - all was fun until Mark got carried away and broke another lads nose with a high kick underestimating distance and his strength. After a stint at A&E we decided not to do it again so we opted to do superheroes instead and a friend Tanya was wonder woman she spun around, made herself giddy and fell through her Nans greenhouse - hilarious memories looking back. Thanks for the nostalgic trigger. Very Best Crab 🦀 x
Ha ha , my big sis & her friend got the haircut , but I always was the bad guy who had to pretend to be dead at the end of the game😮. Me & mum & big sis used to be glued to the tv when this was on.
@markmanc-zw3td Thanks for sharing your memories. Did something similar with a mate and his girlfriend by driving to the beach and recreating the opening of the programme with the music theme blaring out of the car once we were stoned. However my mates girlfriend was no Purdey more like a 12 bore how we laughed when she did a high kick and ended up in a rock pool twisting her ankle. She had a kind of bob i recall but alas the cut made her look like Mike Flowers. Best 🦀
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN Thanks Crab, that's so interesting to hear and I forgot to tell you that Zachary kicked me in the eye doing a Purdey kick and dreading going to school with a black eye I splashed cold water on it for an hour and luckily emerged unscathed, we were fascinated by the idea of a pretty girl who could beat up men! We also did Charlie's Angels! It's great to know there were other kids doing the same thing because at school we were considered odd to say the least xxx
I loved both the originals and the NEW Avengers as a child browing up in British Columbia. A little more than a decade later I was working with a company in Toronto associated with Alliance Atlantis and we began work on a restoration of at least the Canadian episodes. I remember securing 2” TV Master Tapes, reviewing some of them and getting ready for scans, as a fan and being a part of my growing up, it was rather exciting to be a involved. But there were hiccups in both the financing AND determining who actually owned the Canadian rights any more. Sadly my boss, Derek McGillivray, who had hoped to re-sell the series to Specialty Channel TV and on DVD died suddenly and I lost track of what happened to those master broadcast tapes after that. Of course those 2” video masters were produced from the filmed originals.
Thats a shame and a sad story. I am hoping that the New Avengers will make it on blu ray however interest fades until retro becomes popular again. Thank you so much for your comment. Crab 🦀
You're right - when writing this I never changed the voice over error. He was indeed Frederick his gigolo alter ego was Alberto so my brain thought 'Albert' . My error thanks for pointing it out. 🦀
Nice one again thanks you👍 Please i would like to see your take and info on the following shows The Guardians (1971), 1990 (1977-78), Beasts (1976), The Stone Tape (1972), Dead of Night (1972), Mystery and Imagination (1966-70) also The Frighteners (1972) Keep up the good work 👍 ❤️ it
Definitely. Lumley was a superb choice. I like her as an actress as she never takes herself too seriously and is up for most things seemingly. As the Avengers is tongue and cheek her casting was spot on. 🦀
You are more than welcome - I tried my best to improve the quality however this is the best I could do. I am so pleased and thank YOU for watching my little programmes and taking time to comment. 🦀
Great stuff! I've definitely upset friends by saying that I prefer The New Avengers to the original, but it's probably my age - the stories are very deep in my psyche
I do find it hilarious that Clements and Fennell would go on to create The Professionals, which is about as far from Avenger Land as you can get. Funnily enough, Lewis Collins tried out for Mike Gambit, but ended up in Obsession opposite Martin Shaw, while Gordon Jackson was in Castle D'eath.
lucky enough to grow up at perfect age for both Series - like Doctor Who, some episodes were more than a little eerie.. Shall never forget the sound of the electric milk float, or cybernaut karate chop, or... Theme tune for original Series was epic...annoyingly modernised / dummed down in the second series Diana Rigg and Jo Purdey were epic - apparently I slept in same bed as Joanna...but not at the same time :( - in Peter Gabriel's old 'Big Thatch' Patrick? - Uniquely debonair, the archetypal true British gent :)
The Avengers belonged to an era. It was hard to recapture the bizarre / surreal effusion of the previous three incarnations in the mid 70 s. I watched the n New Avengers on Canadian TV and t it did have it's moments.
You're correct there Mr Anderson - like most 60's TV ; The original Avengers was very unique although The New Avengers , as you say, had it's moments and embraced that grittiness that was emerging not only in adult but child programming too. The new Avengers almost got there but due to hit and miss stories hindered by the headaches of production - it always seems to be the bridesmaid and never the bride, never reaching it's full potential ; it's well overdue for a re-appraisal. I sincerely hope my little programme made people refreshed with this smashing little show. Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. Best - Crab
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN For some strange reason I loved Tar King. The thing about the Avengers was that Steed remained Steed. The sidekicks changed. I am writing from Canada my Aunt Lois played Miss Moneypenny. Her last movie was From A View To A Kill. She told us that her Miss Moneypenny role was very minor. In all the Bond films she appeared on screen less than 1 hour in total. Seriously. She was more a stage actress.
@@iananderson7883 Greetings to Canada from Look...Look and Look Again in the U.K. Wow - thank you for the comment. You're Aunt Lois seemed very humble especially when Miss Moneypenny is integral to the Bond franchise . Although less screen time than her co-stars I firmly believe miss Moneypenny is just as integral as she is pivotal in shaping the wonderful world of Bond.- especially in those endearing tag scenes. Bond is another passion of mine especially, as you will no doubt guess, the 60's and 70's versions. Stage actress or not - she gives a fine performance in all the movies and it was very noticeable when the franchise changed and although less than an hour in total - she was very conspicuous in her absence. I really appreciated you sharing that with us here. Enjoy the retrospectives as I enjoy creating them. Best - Crab
I loved the original Avengers especially the Linda Thorson episodes, which I watched again and again when living in France. I was disappointed with the New Avengers which almost came across as a regular crime series even though some stories were more original. Steed had lost his smiling charm, the show had lost its tongue in cheek humour, even the humorous little scene at the end of each orignal Avengers episodes had been cut out, leaving the endings of these new episodes quite bland. Gone were the eccentric and often humorous characters that lined the original episodes. For me, the New Avengers did'n't live up to the style of the originals, even the sound quality seemed to be under par. Having said that, Purdey was attractive, but Gambit always seemed like the servant in Upstairs Downstairs, I could never shake that image of him out of my mind, hence, for me, I could never get used his character, it's a pity they didn't choose another actor. I would like to have seen it continue and hopefully get better, but I fear that wouldn't have happened. Maybe one day they'll bring back another new version of The Avengers with two (not three) new characters, hopefully bringing back that tongue in cheek humour once more. One can only hope.
I was in junior high when I first read that they were doing this series. Having already been my favorite series ( since grade 2!!), I couldn't wait for it to be broadcast. I remember being sad that Linda Thorson wouldn't be back, but about 2 minutes into the first episode, I knew Joanna Lumley was a great choice and that Purdey was, indeed, a true " Avengers Girl"! I can't say which season I preferred as there were episodes in both seasons, that I quite liked. I think that the episodes shot in Canada were actually quite good ( though I do agree with you regarding " Emily"....ugh!). However, I must admit " Forward Base" is probably my favorite as it reminded me the most of the original series. I hated " Killer" from season 6 of the original series but thought " Complex" was a far better take on that theme. This series should have had another season at least. Either way, we got to see Steed for 26 more episodes....and that ain't bad! Cheers! AND JOANNA JUST BECAME A " DAME". BRAVO JOANNA!!
I liked complex very much - probably my favourite of the canada series is The Gladiators as its quite gritty but am a fan of Forward Base for sure. It would have been great to see a 3rd series but funds and poor syndication scuppered that - i guess in its latter dsys something was better than nothing at all.
A classic series and fondly remembered , although the intermediate series with Linda Thorson , Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg were undoubtedly the best . Series 2 of TNA were definitely on the wane , and the episodes filmed in Canada were absolutely dire . I know TNA was in part sponsored by British Leyland , but Steed's Jaguar apart ( which got a good showing in The Three Handed game ) , most of the vehicles were pretty dire too , and looked even more out of place in Canada than they did in the UK based episodes . Steed should have kept his Bentley , or possibly been given something like a Bristol 411 , Gambit ought to have driven something like a Jensen Interceptor , Purdey might have driven something like a Mercedes Paoda SL , or perhaps an E-Type . Although Patrick MacNee is sadly no longer with us , someone like Benedict Cumberbatch could potentially pick up the bowler hat for a 21st century revival with a suitable female lead , perhaps getting back to being a twosome and closer to the successful 60s format .
Aaah great memories. Those were the days of few tv channels, but good and great programs (At least in the UK LOL). I grew up watching all of these type of series, from the Avengers, Dr Who, Thunderbirds, to name just a few. Even Crossroads with it's wobbly sets lol. Beats almost any of the rubbish they put out today. Anybody remember Saturday night tv sale of the century lol. And if you want to see Joanna Lumley stunning as ever, check out Sapphire and Steel. WOWWWW......Just my memories lol....
Patrick Macnee did say years later he wish he hadn't done The New Avengers, It had lost its way a bit i think and was very European and not the stylish British show anymore but it was also a new decade..The 70s, Still well worth watching though,
Hi thank you for the positive feedback - inspires me to bring you more. I think , in answer to your question, Thorson wasnt. By then she probably went onto other things. I think the producers wanted to emphasise The New and at one stage were thinking of doing it without our Steed (unforgiveable) . Unless of course anyone else can help - but thats as far as i know. Take care and once again thanks for taking the time to comment . Crab 🦀
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN thanks for the reply. I’m working my way through all your videos, started off with the ones that were favourites of mine like Avengers, Sapphire and Steel, and now delving into ones I didn’t watch as much…and yes, please do more!!
The French wanted Linda, but it did not work out, though a single episode where she retired for some reason would have been nice. She does show up in an episode of RETURN OF THE SAINT with Ian Ogilvy, who showed up in one of her AVENGERS episodes, so it was a nice reunion
I 've seen at least half of The Avengers dubbed in French (my second language:'Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir' was very popular in the French part of my country as well as in France). Funny to learn that the reboot from the seventies started of with a French commercial...more than 40 years ago
The Avengers was very chic - BCBG as the French say so it is no wonder how successful it was over the water. Arguably one of the U.K's biggest visual exports. If it wasn't British I would say it would be French - if that makes sense. Probably not the very early ones but certainly when Emma Peel donned her leathers and Steed had his clothes designed by Pierre Cardin a further nod to that exquisite French charm. It would've been great if Steed and Emma or Tara King had at least a couple of face offs with Parisienne diabolical masterminds! Best Crab 🦀
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN I got to know the New Avengers from Dutch TV back in 1977 or '78: On Thursday evenings. I was 8 or 9 back then. What fascinated me about it was its 'fantastic' streak. In retrospect, a bit Doctor Who-like: it was supposedly a spy series, but there was always this bizarre, fantastic unexplainable aspect to it. I only learned a bit later from my parents, uncles and aunts that there was an earlier version in black and white of this series, which I got to know a bit later on, from French and Belgian-French TV (with Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson - if I remember well the Thorson version was also in colour) Having (re)watched it (the New Avengers) several times as a grown up, I think - unlike these 'others' - that the chemistry between the 3 leads is obvious and awesome and the dialogue is extremely witty and funny. Purdey's wit is so close to Joanna Lumley's , imho, they couldn't have made a better choice. Moreover, if there ever had to be a female Bond (Roger Moore style), It should have been Lumley. Anyway, thank you for this video!
You're very welcome and thank you fir taking the time to comment with your memories. A few weren't keen in the lumley-hunt-macnee dynamic but I , as you, feel there was a decent chemistry and I feel The New Avengers is just as good as it's 60's era. It's great to know how these shows were received, if at all, overseas. If only we had exported more to Europe then we probably wouldn't have so much classic TV missing from our archives ! Best Crab 🦀

THE NEW AVENGERS U.S. AND U.K. DVD Sets are now both out of print with no sign ion reissue and LAST OF THE CYBERNAUTS...? was issued on Blu-ray via a single disc containing all three Cybernaut shows from the two Peel seasons and LAST, but that is now also out of print. Someone needs to pick up the show (maybe the great Via Vision label in Australia, who has issued spectacular expanded Blu-ray sets of all the filmed original AVENGERS seasons) and finally give NEW AVENGERS the HD treatment. Unlike the Technicolor of the last few seasons of the original show, Rank labs processed NEW AVENGERS, giving it a slightly darker look, but a good look that is pretty consistent and unique to itself, for whatever reasons. If the 35mm negatives hold up, then the set could look as spectacular as the original show, or other shows made at the time like KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER and even (to mu continued shock) BUCK ROGERS with Gil Gerard. It may not always be a great show and did not have huge budgets, but WOW was it shot well.
As you I am very surprised TNA hasn't had a blu ray release and was hoping that canal would follow the classic peel and King adventures with a blu ray version of our fab trio. Love the idea of slightly darkening the episodes and maybe CGI 'Gnaws' as a bonus. I am sure the return on investment would be there. IF only Look...Look and Look Again did its own label !! It may happen but as everything is being streamed now to control what the masses watch and because its cheaper then this may fade further into the distance. Thank you so much for your comment, as always much appreciated. Let's keep hoping. 🦀
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN NEW AVENGERS, RETURN OF THE SAINT and especially shocking, THE SAINT with Roger Moore are long overdue for Blu-ray release and both 4K and Blu-ray are selling very well despite what you might have heard. episodes of the two SAINT series popped up on three compilations in the now also out-of-print RETRO-ACTIVE series. Shout! has SAINT rights here, while maybe A&E/Lionsgate somehow still has U.S. rights to all AVENGERS, but Via Vision may surprise us all yet!
Some years ago, I was fortunate enough to purchase volumes 1 -2 of the " New Avengers " at a used book and video shop of all places ! However, you might still be able to acquire 😮 the series using these resources : Amazon; Ebay; Scarecrow Video; or Critics Choice Video! The last time I checked, they were selling most items on DVD only ! Have fun and good luck 👍!
True but I feel New had its charms for sure - it went for corny rather than sophisticated and the style of the 60's paved way for a grittier time (and challenges) for our duo. It was a brave attempt for such a hard act to follow for sure.
I have always been fan of the Avengers, but what seems kill series, The Steed/Tara King Original series. And the New Avengers( 2nd Season) was scheduling by networks. Also moving New Avengers out of Britain to Canda was terrible idea. After all this series 100% British.
I disagree with the King/Steed series although it did have some doofers but it was longer than previous seasonsc- featured worst episode 'Pandora' imho. I agree with the 2nd series it became a bit naff but thete are some highlights, enjoyed Complex and The Gladiators. Crab🦀
It was o.k but by the 2nd series they abandoned it and opted for relationships outside and above. Thats where the show took a dip. Can remember that awful one with Purdey and her ex - think it was 'obsession' ? Awful. 😬🦀

Thank you for that I was totally unaware that The New Avengers is being broadcast on SKY in the U.K - I wonder if these have better prints in broadcast than the DVD releases - this is definately worth a blu ray release. I will check this channel out and hopefully get the chance to see the next one.
Sorry, but if think The Prisoner is rubbish, then clearly you don't get it. In any case, The New Avengers is not serious, a bit slapstick and a completely different type of series. But I like it a lot.
I remember thinking that this was awful when I was 5. I watched it the other night and I was right. Posh talentless money laundering. Britain at it's best.

If you've run out of paper bags then I need a bucket of water for my swelling head. All my subscribers comments give me the motivation to carry on as you will no doubt realise this is a labour of love and time consuming but I enjoy it so very much and there are, fortunately, a lot of appreciate people out there such as yourself. I can see you've had a Look...Look and Look Again-A-Thon and I am delighted. I will definately consider a review of Department S but am currently stacked with lots to take into consideration. With exception of Sapphire and Steel my coverage of ITC shows is rather spartan. The Champions could also be a contender maybe ? Anyway I hope I haven't exhausted your synapses with a nostalgia overload. Best - Crab x
@Crab Apple Sapphire and Steel were on every night at 2300hrs last month. I remember The Champions, Sharon Macready, Craig Stirling and Richard Barrett. I remember their boss Tremayne with the beard. I saw him later on in a black and white Alien Invaders movie. He was the scariest thing in that movie, half man half dog. The Protectors are still on this month. Too late in the night for even me. Harry Rule, Paul Buchet and The Contessa. For nostalgia we watch a lot of The Sony Channel with The Persuaders, Danny Wilde and Lord Sinclair, The New Avengers and other greats, ITV4 with Randall and Hopkirk deceased, The Avengers, It's Tara King at the moment, The Forces TV, UFO and Bless this House 🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️
Hi Sweetie. Listen i have a question....since Linda Thorson was a fave in France, and had alreaday made the commercial, was she even asked if she wanted to do the new series? I'm just curious cos i liked her, and i know Clemens did not. TY X
Hi Princess, I believe that due to the fresh approach that the producers felt was needed and to get away from the 60's vibe to a more grittier 70's style I would of imagined they'd have passed her by. Also based on how Thorson was treated as Tara King initially would have made her think twice. By the time casting was taking place Thorson was also busy on other projects seemingly. So I guess the New Avengers had to evolve into what it became without her. 🦀x
Have to admit I did like the scenes in Paris and Diana riggs cameo appearance in one episode when he phoned her for advice
I loved that Benny Hill parody of The Avengers how delightful to hear it inspired Patrick MacNee to get back into character!
Fabulous! Well researched and informative - and a great script allied with a marvelous delivery - you have a little gem of a channel - happily subscribed, and shared far and wide!
Wow, thank you!😉
@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN My absolute pleasure!
What a nice surprise! As always, great work. And the tribute to Honor Blackman is appreciated.
And, in the B & W episodes they
used a male stunt double for Rigg!

The New Avengers was my introduction to the Avengers world, I did love it, Steed was still the coolest of all!
Completely agree . Steed is an icon.
You did a fantastic job here, great trip down memory lane, thank you very much indeed 👍👍
You are very welcome. Great to see people looking at my older stuff too. Thank you for your lovely comments. 🦀
I’m really enjoying your videos, very well put together and they bring back a lot of memories and highlight how good a lot of these series were
As a suggestion for a future subject - how about’The Onedin Line’? A rock solid BBC series from the Seventies
Aweeeee, thank you Mondasian - I will hope to cover at least one drama this season as we haven't looked again at a purely dramatic series since take three girls. Will definately take this into consideration if not now in the future. The Onedin Line - blimey - my Nan and Mum used to stay in for that series whilst my grandad and Dad went for a pint ! Very popular. Thanks for the recommendation Mondasian - as grateful as always - Best - Crab 😉
I remember The Onedin Line. However I can't remember what it's all about. I'll have to Google it

Best 🦀
When I first heard about the New Avengers i thought it couldn't be any good. But when I saw the episodes i actually loved them.
Take care 🦀
My late uncle bought me a NEW AVENGERS adventure kit then nicked the I.D. card lol.

@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN Ha ha cheers 🍻
Crab 🦀
I seem to remember that Gareth Hunt played the role of Frederick in Upstairs Downstairs. Albert was played by another actor.
You're right - when writing this I never changed the voice over error. He was indeed Frederick his gigolo alter ego was Alberto so my brain thought 'Albert' . My error thanks for pointing it out. 🦀
Nice one again thanks you👍 Please i would like to see your take and info on the following shows The Guardians (1971), 1990 (1977-78), Beasts (1976), The Stone Tape (1972), Dead of Night (1972), Mystery and Imagination (1966-70) also The Frighteners (1972)
Keep up the good work 👍 ❤️ it
Purdey was sexy & brilliant in the series.
Definitely. Lumley was a superb choice. I like her as an actress as she never takes herself too seriously and is up for most things seemingly. As the Avengers is tongue and cheek her casting was spot on. 🦀
thank you. Thank you, THANK YOU for us fans finally getting to see the infamous French advert

Great stuff! I've definitely upset friends by saying that I prefer The New Avengers to the original, but it's probably my age - the stories are very deep in my psyche
What a great wine commercial!
Love the connections between these series. I was never into the professionals much. I admire Gordon Jackson though especially as Hudson in updown. 😀🦀
lucky enough to grow up at perfect age for both Series - like Doctor Who, some episodes were more than a little eerie.. Shall never forget the sound of the electric milk float, or cybernaut karate chop, or...
Theme tune for original Series was epic...annoyingly modernised / dummed down in the second series
Diana Rigg and Jo Purdey were epic - apparently I slept in same bed as Joanna...but not at the same time :( - in Peter Gabriel's old 'Big Thatch'
Patrick? - Uniquely debonair, the archetypal true British gent :)
It surprised me idea for New Avengers got start from Champaign commercial with Patrick McNee and Linda Thorson.😊
Me too. And that the french still thought it was in production.
I'm guessing the episode where they are all put to sleep unconcese was inspired by gold finger
Quite possibly. Best 🦀🍏
I Remember The Episode Of Steed Investigating Strange Activities At Lake Erie.Thought It Was Very Good Played On The Snowstorms At Lake Erie In 1978.
Aaah great memories. Those were the days of few tv channels, but good and great programs (At least in the UK LOL). I grew up watching all of these type of series, from the Avengers, Dr Who, Thunderbirds, to name just a few. Even Crossroads with it's wobbly sets lol. Patrick Macnee did say years later he wish he hadn't done The New Avengers, It had lost its way a bit i think and was very European and not the stylish British show anymore but it was also a new decade..The 70s, Still well worth watching though,
Definitely. I am glad he did. Sad it ended without direction or poignancy. There are some gems though. As you I am glad they did.
Such a great review, lots of facts I didn’t know. One question sprung to mind, was Linda Thorson ever considered or even asked to do the New Avengers?
Hi thank you for the positive feedback - inspires me to bring you more. I think , in answer to your question, Thorson wasnt. By then she probably went onto other things. I think the producers wanted to emphasise The New and at one stage were thinking of doing it without our Steed (unforgiveable) . Unless of course anyone else can help - but thats as far as i know.
I only learned a bit later from my parents, uncles and aunts that there was an earlier version in black and white of this series, which I got to know a bit later on, from French and Belgian-French TV (with Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson - if I remember well the Thorson version was also in colour)
Having (re)watched it (the New Avengers) several times as a grown up, I think - unlike these 'others' - that the chemistry between the 3 leads is obvious and awesome and the dialogue is extremely witty and funny.
Purdey's wit is so close to Joanna Lumley's , imho, they couldn't have made a better choice.
Moreover, if there ever had to be a female Bond (Roger Moore style), It should have been Lumley.
Anyway, thank you for this video!
And PS: The incidental music is AWESOME

The New Avengers. On NOW. The Sony Channel.
Dead Men Are Dangerous. Series 2, episode 1.
Absolutely brilliant
🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️
Too bad Clemens didn't pay more attention to the French champagne commercial itself, which had humor and style.
Crab🦀
It seemed like they tried to copy the chemistry that Patrick MacNee had with Diana Rigg with Gareth Hunt & Joanna Lumley but it was kind of cringe
It was o.k but by the 2nd series they abandoned it and opted for relationships outside and above. Thats where the show took a dip. Can remember that awful one with Purdey and her ex - think it was 'obsession' ? Awful. 😬🦀
TRES Cool
Merci pour le commentaire. Prendre plaisir. 🦀

Thank you for that I was totally unaware that The New Avengers is being broadcast on SKY in the U.K - I wonder if these have better prints in broadcast than the DVD releases - this is definately worth a blu ray release. I will check this channel out and hopefully get the chance to see the next one.
the bloody music is trible
Yes - it does have a funky 'savage' quality about it . Thank you for your comment. 🦀
Emily was probably done to appeal to North American audience with the then fad of Hillbilly movies and tv like Smokey And The Bandit
😖😬🦀 Terrible episode. Apart from car wash scene - quite novel.
The New Avengers.
On now. Sony Channel. Forward Base, Lake Ontario.
🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️.
First season was brilliant, second very, very ordinary, but still miles better than the hyped up rubbish called The prisoner
Sorry, but if think The Prisoner is rubbish, then clearly you don't get it. In any case, The New Avengers is not serious, a bit slapstick and a completely different type of series. But I like it a lot.
The New Avengers.
On now. Sony Channel. Sleeper.

Thank you for the updates and sharing with others where these gems are being shown. 🦀😁

Why the fart?
It just seemed to fit 🦀
I remember thinking that this was awful when I was 5. I watched it the other night and I was right. Posh talentless money laundering. Britain at it's best.
Glad you gave it another go - the memory cheats sorry to hear your childhood memories were right. Not everyones cup of tea but it wouldnt do for us to be the same I guess. Hears hoping you find some episodes enjoyable ?. Best 🦀😁
As usual hon informative and Fun, ....i will abstain from my humble PERSONAL opinion on this show since i've run out of brown paper bags....HOWEVER, you brought the series coverage right up to it's conclusion in fine style, and like you said there are many who would've liked to see it and many more youngsters out there to come. Now, i've been wracking my brains for a potnetial subject for you to think about covering IN THE FUTURE, and....i can't think of one....except Jason King & Department S. Howsabout giving those a whirl. Anyway, i've been watching several of your vids tonight and now it's time i retired off to nod. Thanks again, lots of memories and look forward to watching more later. See ya. x
I remember Jason King and Department S. Randall and Hopkirk (deceased). Anything by Spooner was brilliant
,🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️
@Crab Apple
Sapphire and Steel were on every night at 2300hrs last month. For nostalgia we watch a lot of The Sony Channel with The Persuaders, Danny Wilde and Lord Sinclair, The New Avengers and other greats, ITV4 with Randall and Hopkirk deceased, The Avengers, It's Tara King at the moment, The Forces TV, UFO and Bless this House
🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️
