Sir - My odd (but informed) reticence to sign in to Google means this is the first video I have commented on in years. I’m 68 years old, and a true life ver of cinema since I made my mother take me to 2001: A Space Odyssey (in Ci 0:02 nerama!) three times. I watched an actor, in the span of 3 years (?) play Sid Vicious, Ludwig van Beethoven, Count Dracula, and Lee Harvey Oswald. Who was this guy? Thank you for this video - I certainly see where you’re coming from. You are not wrong - certainly Smiley and Gordon were heavy lifts for an actor. Perhaps I am bamboozled by my own history as an historian. But I think, if you watch closely, you may see that he actually became Beethoven - at least for the camera. Thanks again.
4 mins in, really enjoying this video. Incredibly well made for your sub count, a lovely surprise! Big oldman fan. The role that's impressed me the most of his was probably Joe Orton in 'Prick Up Your Ears'. If Smiley impresses you most, I'd recommend checking that one out.
Thank you for such a kind comment! These videos are taking me ages to make, but I'm having a great time doing it, so I'm very glad you're enjoying them, too! ☺And Prick Up Your Ears is now on my list. Thanks!
Like your analysis. He’s certainly a top actor. Recency bias points to Jackson Lamb - one of the highlights for me of the last few years. Must give Tinker another viewing.
GO's greatest performance, bar none, can be found in the film "Tip Toes" where he assumed the role of Rolfe Bedalia. The courage, the intensity, the method! Brecht and Strasberg would weep, were only they were alive to see it.
Nice video and I completely agree. I would add an addendum nothing he also had to live up to Alec McGuiness's masterful performance as smiley in the BBC TV series from the 80's. Highly recommend a watch of these if you haven't seen them.
Addendum gratefully received. I have not seen Alec Guinness' portrayal of Smiley, but I will endeavour to do so! From the stills alone, he seems to have vanished into the character, and seems to visually resemble le Carré's Smiley more than Gary's one. Thanks for the recommendation!
Be sure to share your favourite Gary Oldman performance/character here in the comments! 🍿🎬
Great video about some great performances. Thanks.
How are you on 17 subs? This was an incredibly well done video essay. Thank you very much for bringing this question and perspective to me, today!
Absolutely agree! I watch the show for Jackson Lamb

Agreed, 100%. I was wondering where the Smiley clips were at first.
I'm still figuring out the best way to go about editing these videos, but I hope you enjoyed it all the same! 😌

Gary Oldman's most profound performance was in, "Immortal Beloved", where he plays Ludwig Van Beethoven.
No objection, your honour. An extraordinary performance in a great movie. 🎥
Subbed
