Why You Don't Need a College Degree.

  • This is why you don't need a college degree.
In my past four years at uni, I've arrived at the unfortunate conclusion that I probably never needed to come to uni in the first place. College isn't for everyone, and in most cases the college experience isn't true. Most days, I wish I didn't go to college. I don't want to go to college, I don't want to go to university, and yet all I've been told my entire life is that you need a college degree to be successful. And that's why I don't like uni. In fact, that's why I hate uni. That's why I regret uni.
Because at the end of the day, there are plenty of jobs that you shouldn't need a college degree for. Sure, if you want to be a doctor, or if you want to be a lawyer, you're going to need to get a degree. But for most of us, we will learn much of the knowledge and skills that we'll need in our careers on the job, through experience. So for those of us who don't want to be doctors and lawyers, that's why college is a waste of money. That's why college isn't worth it.
I'm here to tell you that it's okay to hate uni. In fact, it's okay not to go to uni in the first place. And if you don't know what to do instead of going to college, guess what? There's a world of other options out there.
This video is for high school and college students who are asking themselves:
+ Do I need a degree to get a job?
    + Is college worth it?
+ Do I need to go to university?
+ Do I need a college degree to be successful?
+ Is college necessary for success in life?
+ Do I have to go to uni?
It's time to start questioning why having a college degree has become such an important measure of success our society. It's time to question why Americans are digging themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt for a piece of paper that may or may not lead to any return on their investment. It's time to discuss why you don't need a college degree.

Can we talk about how there’s little to no support for people who decide not to go to college. Especially emotionally. I’m a first generation American and I’ve always been looked down upon for not going. Whenever I’m in a conversation with someone about the future and what they should do I always say look at all your options. You can go to college if you want to, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to, no matter what anyways says. But I always get shut down for that from other people, especially adults. You’re not better than anyone else just because you go/went to college

It's so true. I do think we are moving in the right direction, and people (even employers) are starting to realize that college degrees don't mean a whole lot. But we're still too far off from where we need to be.

Don’t worry buddy I know how it feels but there are better options than college. Yeah college is a nice experience but trust me most of us need a short career to support the poeple who we loved. For me it’s my parents so yeah I did have a great gpa but instead of perusing my dream to college I took a short career as a plumber and well I’m happy when I can afford to take care of my parents. Plus you’ll be surprised most short careers really are not that bad as they seem to tell you.

Yep that's me I'm miserable and am dropping out. My sanity isn't worth this. I had a few people trying to talk me out of it, worried I would get stuck at a dead end job and saying I'd get labelled as a drop out. Since I am now legally a grown person I must fend for myself (it's gonna be an adventure) I have a plan to be able to support myself so by the time I leave I can be on my own (still don't know about my life). I feel alot of pressure from family to go to college ( every one in my family went to college or is going) and a lot of guilt for being stuck in this position in the first place.

The sad truth is that the majority of people (at least in the country where I live) think that no degree equals to failure and shameful. Especially when you have the opportunity to attend college/uni, they would say that anyone who wants to quit is ungrateful and should be ashamed. I am one of those people who want to quit. I received a lot of pushbacks and disapproval from my family who are very academic. Safe to say that I am acquiesced to keep pursuing my degree as I have no options and nowhere else to go.
For those who are also struggling to quit college and already have things planned out to survive without a degree. I hope things will work out soon enough for you to pursue whatever it is you aspire to be and to have in life. You got this. You are not your degree. You are what you do.

I don't wanna go to college because I want to persue the things that I love doing but my parents and teachers have been pressuring and forcing me to go even tho it's not for me. There is also this big weight on shoulder is that if I were to not go to college and instead persue my passions, then my parents would stop supporting me or kick me out. It's really messed up. I don't know what to do to be honest.

I’m 50 /50 in going into college. The first reason is I educated more of my teachers and peers then them ever educating me. All thanks to the internet, many videos, articles, documentaries, and such all covered me, and it was all for free. Secondly the amount of money that’s spend to attend a four year university, you can buy a car, house, or start a business with that money 80k-200k of money. For me, I can pick up a camera, an instrument, or a computer and start making something out of myself.
Many of my inspirations in life didn’t go to college or dropout, to mainly pursuit they’re real passions in life or couldn’t afford it.

Make sure to be honest with yourself, because LIFE IS TO SHORT TO SETTLE. Here in the 21st century, there are so many other options for figuring out a career. Skill training, as you mentioned, certifications, mentorship, real-world experiences, etc. Learning doesn't have to come from a formal classroom and as education costs continue to rise, it seems more and more apparent that the ROI from that education isn't getting fulfilled!

My uncle never finished his mechanical engineering agree. He dropped out his 2nd year due to family issues. He still became a mechanical engineer through self study and mentorship. Honestly if your goal is to be employed rather than self employed then by all means go. You’re entirely right! You cannot, and I mean CANNOT get any sort of good stem job without a degree. If you’re trying to become a mechanic you may get by because it’s a trade and when it comes to trades degrees aren’t always necessary. However, many fact based careers aren’t like that, like a historian, a physicist, etc. Many jobs even require licenses because they can’t be sure you know what you’re doing, like psychologists. If you’re doing a trade or art, it may be better to get real life experience, but this doesn’t apply to all careers.

To see the American culture around college as an outsider, where, as you said, people don't ask "do you want to go to college" but " where will you go to college", is crazy. I'd assume it's because US academia is an industry, but it just makes no sense for the "consumer".
No everyone should be an academic! People's interests are so varied and it cannot be assumed that academia is one for everyone.
It makes me sad how many young people struggle with finding what makes them happy and waste *so much* money on college because it is not seen as deciding to go to college, but deciding not to because college is the default.

Singer/performer/etc is an arts degree which is something you don't necessarily need to get good at and recognized.
Reach out to local teachers - guarantee there are plenty of voice coaches around. Performance? Get involved with local play houses. Even if you don't get chosen at audition, volunteer for stage or production crew to learn everything there is to putting on shows.
Art in general? Take local community courses through community centers or the local YMCA if you have one. And then keep practicing at your preferred media and build a portfolio.

I feel like shit daily and so depressed. But I will get through this as I know what my dream is and as I am working toward it despite the current situation. I thank you for making this video cheers. ^^

Currently I am writing my 10th grade speech on this exact topic! This year, 44.1% of college graduates are working in jobs that do not require such education. On top of this, the University of Chicago is expected to reach $100,000 in annual tuition by 2025. Essentially, there is a vast number of people who made a decision in their first year of adulthood (sometimes earlier) to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on training that they may not end up needing. If that isn't crazy, I don't know what is.

    • @MasticinaAkicta

How did that speech go? Did they even accept that possibility?
And yeah if you do the calculations college suddenly gets expensive! Sure you got a piece of paper and supposed knowledge... but you also now need to 1. find a job that uses it 2. that pays enough to pay back the huge debt.
I tell you people gone crazy!

@@MasticinaAkicta Thanks for asking! It went well, and it got me a high grade. I had a very open-minded English teacher last year, which was a good thing. I don't think that many others would have accepted that topic.
Indeed, college can be a crazy expense. One should only do it if they are sure (to some extent) of what they want to do, not because of the "parties" or "experiences."
I am planning to attend music college for piano and organ, but I do not plan on attending any school that is not worth my time just because I feel that I "should" do it.

I’m currently a senior in high school and during this quarantine it has made me question some things. I feel like college isn’t right for me and that I won’t necessarily fit into their environment but I also feel like I’m making a mistake. What if I’m over exaggerating? I mean these past three years of high school haven’t been so peaceful either. I’ve constantly felt depressed, my anxiety skyrocketed, I grew even more insecure, I gained weight and everywhere I stepped and sat down in class I completely felt exhausted. And I also question if this will be another cycle in my next four years of college. I used to have passion back in freshman year and wanted to do many things, I still do but my decision of taking many Ap classes and honors kinda messed me up. And I felt so stupid. I have a friend who’s taken the same amount of classes and works without having to try so hard which made me really insecure compared to her. I would always tell myself I wasn’t smart because I wasn’t able to pass some things. I truly love learning new things and cultures but sticking my face in a book, looking at a screen and finding the meaning of some useless quote and turning it into an essay for hours seriously exhausts me. And I have this fear of being judged by my mom and her family, I mean I took all these classes just so I decided not to go to college? The only benefit I have gotten was being in the top 10% of the school but even after all of that, it hadn’t given me a perspective on what I wanted to do with my life. Although I have a clue on what I want to do now it doesn’t necessarily require a degree but I still feel so trapped. And I can’t really tell anyone about this

I say follow your heart ❤ if high school is making you feel less than and depressed, I suggest don't go to college because those feelings will be intensified. I hated college and I only went for a year, I felt like I was wasting my time and I only went cause my high school pushed it so much and I didnt follow my own mind. I'm deciding now to become a self taught software developer and learn code because I'm a tech geek 😝 and save up money at my job to maybe get my degree at a later time, cause employers could care less about a degree they care about skills and experience. It isnt hell military can get you so much further in life than college. To get government jobs that pay six figures they take former members of the military before college graduates. Even something like military intelligence, something you only need a high school diploma to enlist for, pays 80-130K out of the military. They get paid as much as people who get an engineering degree and even if you went to college if you dont have experience in that profession you will not be hired. So basically without military the chances of getting into an intelligence agency is almost nothing. Same with law enforcement and many other government jobs that can pay 6 figures.

I'm 19, I didn't listen to the advice in the video and went to uni anyway, then dropped out after 4 months (only because I forced myself to, i wanted to leave on my 1st day of classes). I'm not sure how to phrase this, my perspective has evolved, I feel like my opinion is torn through different lenses:
      1) My idealistic self who imagines what an ideal world would look like. For instance one in which schools weren't businesses or factories of the state or childcare, one in which i would have been more free to study what i like, where i would have received much more support, one in which i would have been valued for my natural love for learning instead of feeling excluded due to my high creativity/different learning methods/lack of interest in the "exammy part" of school.
      2) My self who has had to adapt to our modern world and educate myself extensively on its functionning and my place in it. One where digital relations are the norm, where nature is endangered, where everything goes through beaurocracy, one where EVERYONE GOES TO UNIVERSITY and where existing outside of it is rare/challenging, one where access to most satisfactory professions rely on a set of stupid documents you have to pay thousands for.
      3) My eager self, highly emotionally driven, highly connected to what people call "inner child", passionnate and energetic, who believes in what it believes and chases dreams and wonders.
      3) My indifferent self or depressed voice, who doesn't believe that any of my dreams can be reached, and that it shouldn't matter too much anyway because no my environment I can always find means to create happiness and to be productive/have a positive impact highly focused on my values.
      4) My more rational voice, who asseses all these factors and synthesises them into something else.
I listen to the fourth when it comes to bigger decisions like these. For smaller ones, i alternate between different voices and perspectives. Why? Because I've met someone who had a very positive impact on my life and they always thought in very rational ways, and because I've learnt that rationality combats anxiety better than anything else (and anxiety is the fucking death of life). Rationality means I am free to go volunteering and travelling and do crazy shit any time when I'm out of uni, but that I have to go to uni UNLESS my circumstances change. And that I am allowed to be a terrible student who only does what they want to do PROVIDED i pass my exams and get that degree and all that.
Yet nonetheless, sometimes, doubt clouds my thinking. Am I doing so just to get a false sense of safety because I am too affraid to look behind the curtain? Or because deep down I believe I am too incompetent to take care of myself, my career, and my friendships outside of a structured system called uni? Yeah, most likely. That video certainly brought that feeling back up again.
However it seems to be very little documented and doesn't fit the general narrative of the world we live in, one in which being unsatisfied with ones life is THE NORM, where the job market + housing market are in a crisis, where loneliness and anxiety are so rampant. For fuck's sake, I have an israeli friend who will have to serve several months in jail because he refuses to do his military service (mandatory by the state, not doing your service is also HIGHLY frowned upon by the israeli people), in other words because of his beliefs/personhood/existence. He's MY AGE. One of my favourite youtubers works as a cashier even though she studied at Oxford. Some of my friends have to work full time alongside studying because of their upbringing. I think it's unreal to discard all of that.
I'd be interested in knowing your perspective on what I said, what you are experiencing and what has been said in the video.

Fantastic video! Your point about never applying your college education in your work is so real. As a college senior "studying" media studies, I have taught myself more valuable skills for my future career than college ever has.
As a side note, one of my biggest gripes with college is the idea of the "core curriculum." In my experience, it's an excuse to force students to pay for college for an extra two years taking classes that have little to nothing to do with what we want to pursue. All under the excuse that it makes us "more well-rounded individuals."

I know I want to do a career in the arts, probably something to do with crafting/creating (like maybe a craft artist or something else) and with a lot careers like that, you don’t really need college. I’m thinking either to apply to college next year and defer it for a year to take a gap year or just go straight into community college, since it’s cheaper and the CC I was looking at has something similar to what I probably want.
I agree that if you don’t want to go to college or you want to do a career that you don’t need a degree, you don’t have to go. I have a dream job that does not require college but it’s not a guaranteed thing either, and after all the anxiety, depression, mental breakdowns, and trouble i’ve had with high school I truly don’t think I’ll get through college in a healthy way.
I’m just scared that not going will be a big mistake and that I’ll end up with a miserable life. Adulthood as well is such a big change, moving out, getting a job, and all but I often feel like I’m so far behind and that I won’t adjust well.
I don’t wanna waste thousands of dollars and kill my mental health for a piece of paper i reluctantly got that I’ll never use, but most people around me are putting this idea that if I don’t go to college I’ll be broke and live a bad life.
My siblings and my friends try to calm me down and reassure me but this entire topic just raises my anxiety.
I don’t know what to do or how to do it, in terms of adulthood, but I really, REALLY, don’t wanna go to college.

I'm currently in a 3 year advanced diploma program that I don't specifically enjoy but it has some relations to hobbies and what I like doing. After watching this video and understanding what want to express I might opt to the same program that is only 2 years and a diploma instead of an advanced one. My only problem is people keep telling me the program I'm in "Electromechanical Engineering" is such a good program which stems out to lots of different careers. I keep getting mixed feelings about it but I'm going to re-watch this video and think hard about my choices and just take a leap of faith instead of thinking over and over about it.

In the past i tried to tell myself that i enjoy this and i want this, forced myself through the whole process and now i have to write my finishing work finally, but i really despise it. I even despise the general office jobs you can get with this degree, i worked in that environment for a year and i hated every second of it, just like i hate every second of this finishing work that i have to write now. This whole 3,5 years were just stuff that i can learn anytime if i want to because the information is free and accessable for everyone.

I'm attending university in Italy and what I can say is that it's super frustrating. I'm attending first year of archaeology and I always thought that I would have liked it so much. I surely made good friends but that's it. I always feel sad, depressed, burnt out, useless, stressed and I feel like my mental health is deteriorating day by day. I don't know what to do. I just want to work in a bookshop or a library.

I am currently 22 years old in the Communication Sciences & Disorders undergraduate program. I only have 4 more semesters to go before I get my bachelors. I previously went to Community College for 2 1/2 years and got my associates, went straight into a 4-year-university and had a MAJOR mental breakdown during the first semester. So, I took Spring 2022 off to get myself straight. College is NOT for everyone, and that should be respected. There are so many careers out there that do not require degrees, it all depends on what you want to do, but just know that anything you do will be important. Daycare teachers, store clerks, medical assistants, vet assistants, they all help the economy progress. Without them, the ones with the degrees would be struggling. The ones who own the businesses would have no one to work for that business. I personally want to go to school, get more of an education because I am a high school drop out and got my GED, but I tell my nieces who are in high school: college is a choice, not a necessity. You’ll find your way in life no matter what. If you want to go to college later, and experience life more first, I recommend doing that. Adults expect teenagers who have been in school from 5 years old to 18 years old, with no life experience, to know what they want to do, assume they’re going to college, and zoom through it right after high school. It’s okay to take a year or two to breathe. It’s okay to take decades to breathe. It’s okay to live your life the way you want to live it, because in the end it’s your life. No one else’s.

I'm a 33 year old who's gone back to college. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to quit college because I've done that 4 times already but this video def makes me wonder if I should finish my B.A.. I even want to go to grad school but it's at the expense of not pursuing other life goals even though paying for college is not a problem. When I'm done with my B.A. I will have to reassess if doing more college is what I want.

Thank you so much!!!!! I dropped out of High School because it began draining the very living life energy out of me. I realised that I loved telling stories, wanting to become a writer and so I realised I didn’t need college or even have to complete the remaining harrowing year and a half of this soul draining high school. I feel free now, but my creativity still isn’t back. It will come back soon, and I hope so it does in time. Thank you so much!!!!

this is the first time I'll be saying it, i can't see myself going to college, really my gut feelings my attitude is telling me not to, i already weigh the pros and cons and i still come up with the same conclusion
and i think what pressures me to go are my cousins, relatives who wants a degree and my parents that really hopes me to graduate in college.
but still in the end I'll be the one who'll spend years in college and has the higher possibility to regret every day in my life studying what doesn't interest me or really feed my desire to learn.
    responsibilities are responsibilities
but yeah I think it's really up to us. in the end it's our life we'll live into until we die... and i think stressing over and dealing with college, internships, intellectual shoots for years isn't worth it for me..
that's my opinions and perspective right now..
    there's more to life.

I'm currently halfway through my first semester of college, and I honestly can't stand it. I want to learn how to code to potentially be a software engineer. Even in the one class that actually has to do with coding (the rest being generals that just take up time I could be learning other things with), I'm not learning as much as I think I would on my own. Sometimes we're even required to look stuff up online. In addition to coding, I also want to try voice synthesizing, and get back into learning Japanese. College right now does not reflect these things that I want to learn.

A big problem with college for so many students is the bullshit elective courses you have to take in the first 2 years. You know, the ones that supposedly make you a well-rounded person. They usually involve things that you hate to do. For me it was writing essays and reading thick, boring books. My freshman English class almost had me dropping out. We had to read the IIliad and the Oddesey. I would read for an hour and then find myself wondering what the hell I had just read. I'm the math/engineer type. I like solving problems and designing stuff. I can barely stomach liberal arts crap.

Grace I agree with you completely. School gave anxiety and depression nothing more. I want to quit school but my father is forcing me to go to school and my dream is to become a UA-camr and obviously it doesn't require a degree. My father said that I will never be successful without a degree because we live in a developing country and I just don't know what to do rn. I don't have a computer to make UA-cam videos(because my father thinks high quality devices are useless at my age even though I am 16) . I want to be myself and my father wouldn't let me have freedom to make my own decisions. As you can tell I am going through a lot and I want to prove him wrong. But there are things I need to do first and the most important thing is I need to improve my English accent and I am hoping you can give me some advice on that.

I took college classes my senior year of high school, and I really enjoyed the classroom experience… but I still felt like most of it was busywork BS. My sisters have degrees and they were the saddest, sickest, and most miserable during their college years. Needless to say, didn’t make me want to enroll. I now have an entry level job at a company I really like and I’m determined to be someone that proves it’s possible to succeed and have a fully funded retirement WITHOUT a degree. 💪

the best things i got from college were the Friends i made there (all of them are still my friends 10 years later), but nothing to do with studying in itself (i am autodidact and i never needed professors to study any topic anyway). College was a good period of my life because i balanced my routine between studying, working out, and having freetime for playing guitar and playing video games. again , this can be done without college.

I'm thinking of not finishing college because online classes are more tiring than face to face classes. It increased my anxiety and made me lose my humanity because I feel like a fucking robot. Online class expect you to be online all the time, that's why I'm always anxious because of unending updates through group chats. It won't give you time to relax even though you have a free time. Those free time of yours will only spent worrying of what other activities you will have to do. Or are there new updates on gc or emails? THERE WILL BE NO MORE RELAXATION. It's no wonder that in this generation, there are more individuals with high rate of anxiety. Our wellbeing is more important!

Grace, one of life's greatest achievements is to be in control of it. And I believe that the best way to be in control is for you to have your own business. You could work in a cushy job for a long part of your career, but one day your employer will see you as past your use by date. Yes get some experience first, but by your mid to late 40's you really need to be working for yourself. I say this because I care. The richest person in my home city left school at 13 and worked hard.

excellent video. many college classes are a waste of time, many college research papers are useless, and the high price at a 4 yr college makes it a poor investment. a college degree is a "credential", nothing more. some classes are interesting, but not worth the high prices. many 4-yr college professors are too interested in esoteric, super-specialized minutiae. However, some of the best teachers are the adjunct professors at the low cost community colleges.

A friend of mine committed suicide over a letter you can find in your alphabet soup. They say college is optional, but the job market says otherwise. The need to go to college is more or less a chance to survive in life, but what's the point if a grade is devasting enough, it can drive an individual to take their own life. Not even losing a job can make someone decide so quickly to take that route, but the letter C can? College is not for everyone, it is not for people who can not take stress lightly. The option is really up to you just please make sure you know yourself and accept your own limitations, if people get upset over your decision don't worry about them they'll be okay and if they congratulate you if you decide to go (based on my experience) again don't worry about them because they know their not the ones that going to stress out.
