Solid roller 400 SBC sketchy Valvetrain Geometry issues! How to correct without shaft rockers 👍

- I have had the worst luck with large springs on a 210 AFR cylinder head. Honestly, if AFR made a -.050 lock you could most likely get away with not using lash caps on the 23 degree SBC AFR heads. Spring clearance issues are a big problem most people overlook on 23 degree SBC heads.

If you use the .080 inch lash cap you also have to use a longer pushrod
To correct geometry and i also use isky adjustable pushrod guide plates
To centet rockers on valve stems.
Appreciate the share my friend, I had no idear this could be an issue
Very good demo! I have been trying to find a video for this so I can set up my new 406.
Man You DO Nice WORK Thank You ! Was at Barber motorsports Park this weekend on the track Camaro In friends vengeance prepared 140 into the corners ..Lap 1min 40 .....Fun FUN The TA IS Getting The Work Done To Go back Soon ... Barber motorsports Park is the most beautiful track in America Bar None I was told they all look.. like that in all the countries in Europe
this is such an important part of the engine build most just slap on parts and hope for the best ....
Yep and then wonder why a valve droped.
We found .024 thou. Diff. Between 7.8 and 7.9 pushrods on an SBC, also .021 thou. Between rockers from 2 different companys !!
Looks like an easy method, could see what pushrod lengths you can buy and set an adjustable one to that size and test. Just that you are only as accurate as your eyes. I'm a machinist though so I'm good at that, I'd say you cant see a .005 deviation at the min, maybe a little less if you use a magnifying glass or something.
GREAT VIDEO THANK YOU
good stuff
Glad you did this video most people won't measure the sweep they just center the pattern. I also like that you debunked Scott Foxwell's measurement geometry video. He is a know it all and will argue with you all day long about how he is right. I have no use for that sawed off little Napolian MF. It's cool you have all those pushrods. I wish I did I am always doing it with test springs and a dry erase marker. Even with the dry erase it is sometimes hard to see the pattern. Doubling up the test springs helps but it doesn't simulate a running engine like you demonstrated. Good luck with the S 10. Looks like a runner!
One of the next things to do on my 388ci stroker build. Just finished up the ring trimming.
I have a 389 Chevy stroker engine and I wanted to know what you gaped your rings to mine is N/A

Awesome thanks

Are you checking your valve to piston clearance as well while your are doing this? Are you going to a longer pushrod or shorter to get the lesser sweep? Asking as I am a newb and it is just a question.
Well you can shit can those springs & retainers and just use the Beehive spring with baby retainer and like magic you have truck loads of clearance
Is what size lash cap
what size lash caps did you use
My number 3 and 5 cylinder in my sbc 383 seem to require longer pushrods than all the other cylinders. Literally a full additional turn on the rocker cups to get them within the .019 spec. I have 7.900 in pushrods for all the other cylinders but those two require like an 8.10 to keep it under the two turns for these shaft rockers. Any idea why this is? It's a solid roller cam.
I really wonder why I’d love to know if you found out by now
I’d be willing to bet not all the valves are the same length. Manufacting inconstancies
I know the point of this was to avoid having to go shaft mount rockers but why not just get the jesel shaft mount rockers for those AFR heads. Not only would ya avoid this entire issue but it gives ya the room to run a 3/8 .135 wall pushrod.
I have a Dart lil m block with AFR 220 heads so this isn’t something that I think would work. I get it’s not exactly cheap but running a solid roller with high lift on the street the shaft mount rockers keep things a lot more stable and is well worth the money.
Shafts would be "WAY" better for sure. I just can’t convince myself to spend that cash on a 210 head maybe a bad a$$ 245. I ran this same head on a 355 and it worked well after clearing the rockers. I had those rockers on multiple combos and they felt a little sloppy so I ordered a new set and then decided to make this video.

Is the sweep of the rocker harmful?
The less the better but sometimes you got to work with what you got and are willing to spend. $ Worn out guides are the end result of a large sweep.

Would u say a short sweep that is a little off center is better than, a larger sweep that is perfectly center??
@@edwardojr2838 Yes
Tyler- I agree
Tyler find a 75-77 Vega GT and put the LT1 in it.
The pushrods you have in the motor are too short.
Lash cap. Not lashing cap.
