- HYDE PARK, Ohio (WKRC) - After countless applications and job interviews, a Cincinnati man with Down syndrome felt like giving up, but he didn't.
When a brand new restaurant, Mesa Loca, opened up in his neighborhood, Matthew Castro took in his application. What happened next surprised him.
"I leave my ego at the door and I come with a positive attitude," said Matthew.
He is learning a new recipe in the kitchen. He is frying fresh tortillas and giving them some flavor. Matthew's passion is cooking. He wants to be a chef, but the opportunity to learn and earn a paycheck did not come easily.
"Usually, we go through the process of putting in resumes, filling out online applications and it just seems like it's always a miss for him. They think he's a great kid, but there's always a 'but,'" said Clair Castro, Matthew's mother.
For once, he said there was no hesitation during his interview at Mesa Loca.
I literally looked at Matt and I asked him one question. I go, 'Matt what do you like to do?' And he goes, 'I love food.' Hired. Done," said Kinjal Desai, owner of Mesa Loca.
"He looked at my resume and hired me right on the spot," said Matthew.
His new job gives him independence and purpose.
"I'm just like other people. I manage Down syndrome really well," said Matthew.
But, most importantly, Matthew feels included and equal to everyone on the team.
"It made me feel welcome, and this place made me feel home," said Matthew.
Mesa Loca opened officially Friday at the Old Cock and Bull in Hyde Park.
Respect to the owner. Sometimes people only need an opportunity
Absolutely. I've seen a few go from homeless or living in terrible areas to the top of their skills and a much higher standard of living. All they needed was an opportunity.
1:50 when he instantly smiled after saying that he felt welcomed, that brought tears to my eyes. Huge props to the owner for giving this guy a chance.
Mine also 🥺
Wish to work in that environment respectful environment
These people have the right to work and will almost always show up for work and on time. Some end up staying for 20-30 years or more. They just need the opportunity. He got his and his knack for cooking.
This young man will be an asset! I love his attitude. Kudos to the owner for giving him an opportunity.
I've been cooking for years, and while we're not always nice to everyone who just expects it, we're always nice to people who work hard and deserve it👌
The owner must really be an awesome man !
Congratulations Matthew !
If I lived in Hyde Park, I'd eat there every chance I could !
Congrats on your job Matthew!
Good job Mesa Loca! He will be a dedicated and honorable employee.
Wish more bisnesses were like this one. Happy for Matt

I’m so happy for you Matt!
I’m happy this popped up on my recommended I’ve been down due to the death of a close loved one. Seeing stuff like this makes me so happy and gives me hope.
Outstanding!!! What an amazing restaurant and owner!!!
Glad the owner gave this gentleman a chance and I am willing to bet this guy will do an awesome job
Kindness and acceptance is something the world needs alot more of
In general, and I don't know what it is, but folks with down are some of the hardest most loyal workers you can find. They may not always be the fastest but they have attention to detail and can soke up tasks like a sponge.
Amazing stuff way to go matt and way to go store owner he said i love food boom your hired if only somepeople could be that nonjudgemental
He looks more like he has DS than sounds like it. He DOES manage it very well. So happy for him.
Congratulations Matthew. Way to go. Sounds like the owner got a great employee
Wonderful story. What a sweet & hard working man. Good for him, hope he excels doing what he loves
It's amazing that this restaurant hired this disabled man
So amazing, us parents who have children with special needs thank you all for giving our kids a chance 😍
I wish I lived in Ohio, so I could go there and eat. I hope the restaurant does really well for what they did for this man. A positive job experience can impact a person for a very long time. Good luck to both!
Matthew is a rockstar!
Beautiful
Wonderful 👍
Congratulations on his new job!!! I hope he has a wonderful time at the restaurant 🤞
If even he can get a job there is no excuse for all the bums that litter our streets 😤
Congrats Matt! Congrats to the owner he will never have a more loyal asset and employee in that kitchen.
Shoutout to mesa loca employees its amazing people are so understanding of peoples disabilities but doesnt let that effect their job and having a good work enivorment , most places are despicable when it comes to people with disabilities but glad this man found a job that made him included.
Nice bro! Keep soaring homie!
Just how it should be. I live in south Florida and Publix hires many disadvantaged people and I love it
Awesome good for Matt good luck on your dream being a chef
Great 👍
That’s amazing!
Congratulations 🎉
I bet he's the best employee at the restaurant.
As long as he’s clean and hygienic, who cares if he works.
Cheers
He seems like he doesn’t even let the disease get him at all. Bright and functional as anyone out there.

This is a nice story, but it is one that I am getting tired of hearing; and it usually never ends well for the person with Down syndrome (DS). Sympathy hires is almost as bad as diversity hires; except sympathy hires have good intentions whereas diversity hires are really discrimination in the favor of “the marginalized”. There are things a person with DS can do, and some things they obviously can’t. If later they discover he can’t do the job efficiently or if they make him think he can assume more responsibility when they know he can’t, it is going to lead them to have to make some choices that may force them to fire him later, make him disgruntled, or risk losing money in some way. I am all for empowering people…not giving them false hope. “Empowering” involves a person you know can do the job well, and they just need some encouragement to excel. You’re actually sabotaging a person by telling them they can do something that is physically and/or mentally impossible due to a disability, and then just giving an apology when reality strikes the person. It’s a short term fix with long term negative consequences.
I’m gonna pretend I have some down syndrome so I can get an easy job
0:40 those are chips not tortillas. Must be a FOX news station with their fact checking 😆😂😆😂😆 other then that good for the business and the young man getting a new job
Would you like some drool on your burger?
