      This was made in the noughties where build quality really took a dive thanks to cost cutting. It nearly ruined Mercedes financially. This S Class is in great condition though. I have a 1995 C280 120k and still runs beautifully: lovely smooth straight 6 and pretty quick. I hate it that you can pay 60k now for a luxury saloon and it comes with a four cylinder.

      @@crabby112 what are you on about? Only thing Porsche did regarding W124 was building the 500E because Mercedes didn't had a building line wide enough for the car at the time. Porsche developed 0 about the W124, they just put some together. And Mercedes went to Porsche in order to help them not go bankrupt, not for lack of skills or whatever. The car was developed in the late 70's, Porsche was nothing compared to Mercedes at the time. Get your story straight.

    3:12 Reliability was not actually improved for 2003. The MB master tech I have spoken to in the past actually said some electronics got less reliable (like the new Comand units) and the 722.6 5-speed is able to handle more torque (more durable). The best improvement for 2003 was solving corrosion issues some of the earlier cars suffered from (some were worse than others). Mechanically the cars are otherwise basically the same.

    • @kolinstallman3788
      @kolinstallman3788 2 роки тому

      Owner of an 2004, got the 5 speed, command unit is ok but audio doesn't work when it gets cold, like below 0c so that's weird and the corrosion issues are not fixed. Mine has text book w220 rust. Built in 04 too, forget the month. All Ive had do to was get a new PSE pump for the locks, trunk, seats and whatnot, used for 200 canadian pesos. Car has been pretty solid. My 04 5 545i, now that was alot more fun but man was it a POS. Owned it 2 years, probably put like 10k in parts into it, DIY labour.

    With this model Mercedes begun to produce shit. This car is BAD in many ways. Pneumatic suspension is VERY expensive to fix, but the RUST is main reason not to buy it... With these year models, Mercedes claimed that they have found new way to make anti-corrosian technologies with metal. Well it rusts more than LADA. You can say engine, gearbox is good, OK. But without them, there are many other problems that can be solved, of course, but with what price...

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 2 роки тому +1

      Wrong on all accounts. These are the most reliable S-Classes ever made with M112/M113 and 722.6:
      1. Pneumatic suspension lasts just as long as traditional shock and coil spring, as long as you change the compressor filter as required. Hydropneumatic (ABC) was the unreliable suspension.
      2. They simply overestimated the lifespan of the new body dip anti-corrosion solution they were using so some cars were fine while others were awful. Not a condemnation of the car's engineering at all. This was totally resolved by 2003 production and you can still find pre-2003 cars with little to no rust

    "S" actually stands for "Standard". According to the oweners manual from that year. Not Summer.
    W though is as you say "Winter". It starts off in 2:nd gear but also shifts into higher gears earlier and is more reluctant to downshift.

      Funny. For my w211 the dash says either C or S.
      Was told if you have the C and S combo, C means comfort while S meant sport. W and S combo means it is Winter and Standard for sure.
      The S on my w211 doesn't feel like standard at all. Feels really jerky when u let off the gas. Throttle response also becomes damn sharp that it feels like a throttle cable car.

    • @NokiaHumanForm
      @NokiaHumanForm 2 роки тому

      'A' mode can be unlocked if u have the computer software to do it. But A only shows its effect if you have more gears like the 7Gtronic. For the 5GTRONIC tranny, agility mode isn't necessary. S is already enough.

    • @martinsv9183
      @martinsv9183 2 роки тому

      @@NokiaHumanForm My parents have a facelifted w211 E280. When I drive it I put it in C in the city and S otherwise.
      I would want the upshifts according to C. No reason to stay longer in 6th gear instead of 7th for example. And I want the 2:nd gear rolling starts especially in the city. But I also want the more downshift willingness from the S mode :)
      Would be nice if you could adjust those things yourself in some way with a couple of knobs or touch screen.. and make a custom setting.

    Ich fahre das gleiche Auto, allerdings mit ein bisschen mehr Ausstattung und mit 80.000 Meilen als Rechts Lenker. Das Auto ist wunderbar! Ich fahre den Wagen seit zwei Jahren. Auch ein vor Modell von 1999. Ich habe 4000 € dafür bezahlt. Kein Rost, viel Gedöns, wunderbarer Motor, manchmal spinnen irgendwelche Steuergeräte. Habe noch mal ein paar 100 € in ein Diagnose gerät investiert, um auftretende Fehler rücksetzen zu können. Das war eine gute Idee. Ansonsten: so viel Auto für so wenig Geld gibt es meiner Ansicht nach nirgendwo sonst. Ich fahre auch noch eine andere S-Klasse, 300 SEL VON 1970.

    No mention of how much it cost to fix up this car? My guess is it was bit more than the Volvo...
    Shame you're selling it, as a road trip video with the two cars would have been cool. But good luck with the sale anyways!

      It´s like any other car.If you are willing to study the car and do the work yourself,it´s not expensive.And mind you,this is MB,it´s not constantly broken if the previous owners treated it well.Air suspension is reliable and quite simple system,but if you are unlucky and one of the airstruts need to be replaced,it´s quite expensive...unless you gamble and buy a chinese brand with 200-300e/dollars.

    The key to buying one of these is finding one that is well maintained with service records or don’t even buy it. Expect to have a lot of repairs and maintenance work done. Most of the people that bought these were not real car enthusiasts so they didn’t take great care of them.
