    I love direct sowing because I'm lazy. LOL. However, I am in zone 9B so that is a bit easier for me. 👍😀🌱🌻🌼😍🌷 - Liz

    Martha Stewart's rose garden is sprayed with bath salts. Seems to work for her so I sprinkle it in my many rose plants in my main garden. Tomato plants I do give food to them.

    This is good advice. I was stressing about about which things to direct sow vs transplant. Great advice to do what works best for you!

    We are in the process of moving from Alaska 4B to Washington zone 8 to start a family market garden. Your videos help so much with thinking outside the box and making those connections you might not otherwise think of. I appreciate all you do to educate ppl in all stages of learning. And have really inspired me to look into teaching one day. Thank you for all you do. 😇

    I am glad you did an episode like this. Lots of factors like some seeds just don't like to be direct sown.

    It's my second year having a garden. I start my tomatoes and peppers in trays and keep them in the laundry room with a small space heater to get them to germinate. As soon as they pop up I take them outside during the day if it's warm enough to keep the legginess down. Would lights and heat mats be better? Probably. But on a shoe string budget, you do what you can do with what you have. I chose to spend money on seeds, starting mix and soil. I got some old windows for $5 each and have enlisted my husband to make me a tiny cold frame. : )

    Those terrible Rolly Pollies! They are the reason I start everything inside, too. I've been told so many times that they won't eat live plants, but I swear they LOVE seedlings! They demolished my cucumbers, gourds, and squash last year. I wound up having to buy plants from a store. :/

    Between my landlords, Jess and you, I’ve learned so much about gardening. I’ve had lots of failures due to learning but, I don’t give up easily and continue to move forward and test the boundaries of what I can and can’t do in what little space I have available to me. Despite the discouragement that I get from my husband, which now he has changed his mind, I keep going thanks to you, Jess and our landlords. My Mommy, God rest her soul, has always said that I had a green thumb and had always encouraged me to fulfill any dreams that I have had in my heart ❤️. She always said that everyone has a God given talent and you were blessed with many talents so use them as God intended you to use them for and those words stick in my mind daily and since her passing 3 years ago, I have been hearing those words strongly in my mind and heart. I feel that drive to garden and to draw/paint more lately and I just can’t shake those feelings off anymore so, I am pushing forward with my beautiful dreams of gardening and am going to finish off a painting that I started a while back and am not going to fight back those feelings anymore. The passion has grown so much inside and I’m about to unleash those talents thanks to all of you and your encouragement. Thank you for coming into my life just at the right time and bless you ❣️🤗❣️

    I'm glad you mentioned that you direct sow melons. I'm in Aurora, CO 5B and decided to grow melons for the first time this year and actually this week it came to mind should I actually be starting those indoors or not, the seed packet gave me no information to go off of so thank you. I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes for me.

    Not really related to your video but a hobby lobby add showed and it was so sweet! 😭 it’s really comforting to know that there is really never a one size fits all for gardening. I did direct sow a couple tomatoes and they did just as well as the ones I started indoors but that is more of a testament to how badly the ones I started indoors fared. Hoping for improvements this year!

    I have a new idea this year. There'll be sooo much transplanting!
    Growing transplants is not always to get earlier plants. Settling transplants, at correct spacing, eliminates the need for future thinning.

    So this is my first year of starting flower seeds, but I’m not seeing a lot of germinating. Does it take that much longer for flowers Vs vegetables?

    • @backyardfarmingwithalex9172
      @backyardfarmingwithalex9172 3 роки тому

      It can really depend on the variety of flowers. What are you growing? Other important factors can be heat, humidity, and moisture. I've had issues keeping indoor seed starting stations warm enough for getting good germination on certain plants. You could try keeping them in a warmer area/room until they're germinated. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the informative video girl! Are you leaving all your seedlings out in your greenhouse tonight when the Arkansas temps drop down in the thirties? I have over two hundred tomatoe seedlings and no heat system in my small greenhouse (1st year new year)and fort smith area temps at night are cold still. Just curious how you deal with Arkansas wild weather .

    • @melissasullivan1658

      I’d definitely bring those inside.

    • @InTheGardenAgain
      @InTheGardenAgain 3 роки тому +2

      I was wondering this too. My grow lights space is all used up. I want to move my tomatoes and peppers out to the greenhouse but it’s still dripping to the thirties at night in my area too.

    • @melissasullivan1658
      @melissasullivan1658 3 роки тому +2

      It’d be one thing if they were hardened off and it was at most 50 deg at night AND they were of good transplant size, but summer seedlings definitely can’t handle a dip of low thirties. I can’t think of how to keep the soil in a flat tray warm overnight, so it’s just easier to stick them above the fridge or your drying machine.
