      Yes he is fantastic. I would also recommend Adrian on Anyonecanplayguitar. He’s good too. Does some more eclectic stuff. He’s English so does a lot of British stuff from the 80 and 90s.

      Great tutorial but missed the down tuning and almost gave frustrated up. This might explain some thumbs down. The tutorial is not really beginner friendly but hey, it's even sweeter once you figure it out by yourself.

    So if, like me, you're struggling with the Robert Fripp riff that gets put through Brian Eno's e-bow synthesiser thing (1977 vintage) to get that Heroes sound, just look at a couple of the live videos where a violin is used to get a very similar sound. And don't beat yourself up! Better players than you and me can't do it... so thanks to Shut Up & Play for giving us at least the right notes to play. Awesome song; awesome tutorial. Thank you.

    Cool. Thanks for the link to the Sound On Sound article. Bowie , Brian Eno and Robert Fripp were an extraordinary team. I went to the "Heroes" tour concert in 1978 , where Adrian Belew and Carlos Alomar were the guitarists. I went to the "Serious Moonlight" concert in 1983, where Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar were the guitarists. Heroes...what a song live...Strong positive vibe.

    This is the best tutorial of "Heroes" on the net! There are many different live versions by Bowie in concert; but the best seems to be "David Bowie (A Reality Tour)". While Fripp used raw feedback to do the sustained note (one reason he is seen with headphones in concert) the lead guitar on "A Reality Tour" is using an 'EBow'. Another concert video shows the sustained note done on an electric violin, but I think the guitar version has more soul!

    Great lesson Shutup.
    I loved Fripp's collaborations with Bowie. Fripp's stylings are very evident in this song and probably even more so throughout the Scary Monsters album.
    As for Carlos Alomar, he certainly had that certain je ne sais quoi that helped define Bowie's recordings.

    The "synth" part at 11:00 is really Robert Fripp's guitar treated. Yes, there are very inventive things going on within this song. It's a collective effort with the cream of the cream involved. Just the reverb/mic technique of the vocals by T. Visconti is amazing, specially since he invented that technique on the fly 'cause they run out of tracks leaving just one for the lead vocal. Something unthinkable these days.

    Man! This is the best fucking tutorial I have ever seen. A nice straight forward intro showing us how the parts looked when played. Then a straight forward break down of the parts. But not too broken down. None of this 'ok, so put your second finger on the 5th fret of the D string and your little finger on the 2nd fret of the A string and play the 2nd, 4th and 5th strings etc'. Just showing us, visually, as you would a mate.

    Great lesson. Had to learn this quick for a gig and came here. The song is in the key of G though, There are C naturals all through out the melody. Starts on the 5 chord then to the 4. If you play that C# from the key of D over this tune you'll hear it right away.

      Not G - D Mixolydian, which has the flattened 7th.
      Same notes as G major, agreed, but the home chord is clearly D.

    HE USES A eBOW that gives it it's unique sustaned sound which spins the cylinder on the "B" string constantly so it sounds like it's sustained. But really it's spinning on the string constantly. Very insightfull specially on the drop "E" string to the "D" string. Excellent addition. Doing the Bass walk with the drop "D" . I love the name. Shut up and play. Because there are too many guitarist that gab too freakin much. But this guy was perfect. gave you the parts. and all of them too. Very good ear on this guy. So Shut Up And Play!!! Great Tutorial. Brother.

    • @markbluemel9057
      @markbluemel9057 4 роки тому

      Fripp didn't use an Ebow. That was all feedback. In www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-david-bowie-heroes Tony Visconti, who produced it, says "he came up with that beautiful line which everyone thinks is an E-bow sound, but which is actually just Fripp standing in the right place with his volume up at the right level and getting feedback.". Live performances tend to use Ebows or Fernandes sustainers, but the recording didn't.

  • @hiseminencetheholymacdiarmada

    For me, the best is how he was performing in on the Reality Tour. He may have been playing that way before Reality, where he switches up the verses. Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard with the e-bow, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, amazing band!
