Thank you so much! It's hard to watch, but I'm so glad it's out there. A couple years ago, I was so close to burying an opossum who succumbed to her injuries in my yard, when I noticed a bit of movement. Back then, I didn't even know they were marsupials! Although her sibling was lifeless and I couldn't find anyone else in the area, there was one little girl in there who really wanted to live! The next couple days were a crash-course in opossum nursing and getting them to potty. She lived, and visited me on my porch for many years!
Nature is brutal to think their average lifespan 1-2yrs in the wild. As much as we want to keep them as pets we cannot as it's not their natural habitat. I envy people who can keep them as pets but it's sad to see them die of old age as well.
Thank you for the education! I live in a fairly rural area and seeing a dead opossum at the side of the road is a pretty common sight. I never thought of checking the pouch for babies. From now on, I will carry a pillowcase in my car and I will check every dead or severly injured opossum I see.
Thank you for your help! had the same situation! I found a possum on the road. He was hit by a car. But I saw live babies in her pouch! I helped them! That was seven live babies! I took them to the shelter.
Watching this bc I saw a hit opossum on the road and went to move it so that scavengers wouldn't be hit next, and noticed there was little things scattered about that I at first thought were guts... It was a bunch of babies. About 8-10 of them. I touched them all and only one moved a little, they all were as cold as rocks but I have her now and will try getting her to a wildlife expert as soon as they open and answer in the morning. I've gotten her to potty a little bit but I'm worried. She's about as okd as the ones in ghis video if not days younger, eyes are closed and hardly any hair on her. I named this baby Tulip and she's moving around a lot. I really hope she makes it.
Thank you so much 😭😭😭 I’ve been trying to find out where to look in case I come across a deceased mama. You provided vital information. I’m going to put together a “kit” to keep in my vehicle. Gloves, pillowcase or bin, flashlight, etc. Already have the phone number stored for wild life help in my area. Thank you for showing this even though it’s tough to watch.
Advise you cover your hands with rubber or plastic. But well done on the rescue of those cuties. I'm sure they'll get plenty of TLC before they're released to live happy lives and assume their critical role in our environment.
Thank you for this information because I never knew this before. Someone mentioned it in a comment on a UA-cam short, so I typed it in and your video popped up. It's very sad, but it would've been even more tragic if those five babies had perished as well, because of starvation or predators. 🙏❤️
I am so thankful for this video. I live in the south and I see dead possum this time of year.(spring) along the road a lot I am going to start checking for babies. There is no rehabilitation centers near me. I live out in the country. I’ll try it myself.
I check them regularly. I have only ever found pinkies, and out of 3 dead mommy's, only one batch was alive, the rehab center said they didn't make it 😢
I recently brought a deceased mom with her babies still nursing to a wildlife rehab. I was told they shouldn't be plucked off the nipples because the nipples can come off and go into their stomachs. I was also told that the mom's milk becomes toxic soon after she dies and so it's not always a good thing that the babies are still nursing. In the case I was involved with, there were 10 babies and they are all going to survive. I am so grateful that wildlife rehabs exist and grateful to the dedicated people stopping them. Always remember to make a donation to help them cover their expenses. My rehab had 10 tiny creatures to tend to after I left them with her.
that thing is clearly dead. possums arent very good at "playing" dead and its very obvious theyre still alive. they still show you there teeth. and react when you touch them. and breathe and move their eyes.
Hi @Crowley Museum & Nature Center! :) ~ I am working on yt video project about Opossums and I was wondering if I could use some of your Opossum footage❓ (I would credit you of course!) 🙏
A lass I'd had a opossum start to visit my porch with three poops to show its presence. The first time it being a second floor porch with stairs up to it I came up the stairs with the opossum on the back of the porch's handrail. That is the only way into the upstairs so I talked to the opossum gently for a few minutes as I had to get to the sliding glass door. It looked at me and I got by it as quickly and gently as I could to get inside. The opossum seemed to like watching me from the porch and the last time it seem to sit on the porch for over an hour near the glass where it could see inside where it would normally be up on the handrail. I bought some apples to share with it waiting for it to come around only to hear from my mom she'd noticed a dead opossum in my street. I went out immediately and it looked like my opossum. I came back a little latter and got it off the street and placed it under a over grown bush. Then I started to think how my hair stylist had said her sister would always check dead opossums for babies in their pouch. I went back the next day and checked. Iit was female, but it's pouch didn't have any movement in it and from watching this video I don't think there were any babies. I used a screw driver to gently open the pouch. It had been hit by a car. I'm not totally sure if it was my opossum it seemed bigger, but the face looked like the one that had been looking at me. It's a slow 20 mph street with some lighting. It was as big as a cat and at least that heavy I can't imagine how somebody could hit such a slow moving animal on an otherwise empty street.
How do you figure that? The mother is dead which means the babies would no longer be getting the milk they need to survive and grow. And to be stuck in the middle of nowhere they would have no protection from predators. They never would have left the pouch at such a young age so they would have either starved or been killed/eaten by predators.
thats not true at all. all those babies would have died if she didnt "bother them". why do people who dont know shit say the dumbest shit so confidently lmao.

Its not😂
Thinking about all the dead opossums I've seen in my life and how many babies may have been killed because I didn't know this. 😔
And to think they would starve to death if no one checked their deceased mother. May this reach more people. Sad, but very informative video.
Thank you for the education!

Im so sad that they were curled up inside their dead mother. I'm so relieved you were there to save them, thank you🥰🎁🌲💝

thank you for saving the children!😢
Oh who cares, you people are so dramatic!! 🤡🙄 You care about stupid possums but not people
Poor babies and momma! 🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽 Great job saving the babies!

Why because they might bite?
@@kawaii_hawaii222 Because there could be bacteria and insect vermin in or around the pouch.

They're so young! Poor babies were orphaned.

So sad. Poor babies and mom.
Как хорошо, что малыши спасены
Aww poor babies 😔 rip mama 🥺
Amazing. Thank you for making this video! Great save!
I've never ran across one with babies but I always feel the need to check for babies
this woman is amazing

Okay but I was never taught that
Opossum have a pouch

Where you 100% sure the mother was dead? They pretend to be dead... I'm sure you know that - and I see the wound there... But still :)
If they really hard & stuff. Unfortunately she would be dead & that one also has an open wound in the picture.
Im pretty sure if it was playing dead it wouldve reacted to its babies being taken, but i understand
Even when they play dead you can still see them breathing
that thing is clearly dead. possums arent very good at "playing" dead and its very obvious theyre still alive. they still show you there teeth. and react when you touch them. and breathe and move their eyes.
Wow. The ones I found today were even younger than those. I don't know if they'll make it but at least I was able to take them to an animal rescue.
Rest easy Momma Opossum. ❤
I don’t mean to sound uneducated, but really, what should you do with the little Joeys after removing them?
Find a animal shelter that knows how to treat them. Or look up videos on UA-cam how to take care of them yourself.
FÉLICITATIONS DE TOUT MON CŒUR !!!
I found baby opossums and me and my friend took care of them! Then when they Wher strong enough, we let them go it was so sad, but cute
I’ve never thought about checking for babies, I know now 👍
aww that's very kind
God blese you child
God Bless you, kind heart! ❤
You are a great person
How do you care for them?
You should contact a local wildlife rehabber or exotic veterinarian as soon as you find them.
I have read that it's best to take the deceased mother along with the babies to a Vet or wildlife rehabber.

They would've been just fine without you bothering them.
People always gotta bother things. 🙄😑😐

Actually you’re wrong. They’re too young to fend to themselves. Do some research before making an ignorant statement.
They literally would’ve died. Their mother was dead meaning there was no one to care for the.
