Secondly, there is no prescribed punishment for smoking instead of slapping him, They could have advised him. This absurd scene makes Islam look bad and promotes more misinformation among people.

To my knowledge and the vast majority of scholars' opinion, "It's prohibited to slap on the face even in battle", there is also a hadees regarding this but I can't recall it for now, But it's prohibited and there is no doubt about it.
