In this video I discuss Vinland Saga and the important lessons about war and human nature that this Anime teaches us. In my opinion, you can learn more from just watching this Anime than you can from many history or civics classes that they teach in schools.

For real Beserk was one I learned a bit about the extent ulterior motives and adoration can blind you, also, iit may not be an anime but I read this one manga/manhua called Rebirth Of The Urban Immortal Cultivator and it made me learn the crazy ways people can take advantage of power, and just how much public perception can influence people's view of you, sort of like a superman effect, when superman isn't being superman despite the fact he looks exactly like superman just with glasses and no one can tell, ego driven people which is most of the human population fit you into a box that makes them not see you as anything else. Most people know certain things but anime and manga allows you to see real examples of possibly what the author has experienced and their translation of the events that happened to them.

I can see why you're not liking this story as you don't care about characters because in Vinland it's mostly about the characters and you're probably looking for something that makes you sit on the edge of your seat, well in my opinion, it's great because the characters are complex and it's not something I can just 'swallow' because it lets me think, that's why it's interesting but if you like those more fast paced, more action then to each to their own.

I think Vinland Saga actually affirmed idealism, not realism. The whole show is about what happens to ideals (being a "true warrior") in a harsh reality. For Thors, his ideals meant trying to protect his family whilst being as peaceful as possible (eg. fighting with his fists, leaving the Vikings). Ultimately, despite his death, which is argued to be caused by idealistic naievete, his character is looked upon later in the story to be the epitome of a true warrior, not only by Thorfinn, but also Thorkell and seemingly the show itself. Askelad is initially used as the characterization of realism (I'll define realism as prioritizing the security of a state or individual at any means necessary), as shown by him using underhanded tactics to defeat Thors. But later, it seems like Askelad actually becomes an idealist, willing to give up his own life for the sake of protecting his ideals (saving Wales and Canute). On the other hand, Thorfinn seems to take a more complex character development, starting off as a nice, idealistic boy and ending up as a character bent on revenge and numb to killings. Whilst he still retains some of Thors' ideals (only fights Askelad in a duel), near the end of the story, it's almost as if Thorfinn had become a machine that only knows how to fight, devoid of ideals. But at the last episode, it seems that Thorfinn, too, becomes an idealist when he goes to find Vinland. On that note, Vinland (which is what the show is named after), in the show, is the metaphorical representation of idealism, seeming sought by all the aforementioned characters. Overall, whilst the show doesn't tell you which ideals to follow, it tells us to look within ourselves to find our own ideals and protect them.

Desphinx that’s honestly the best part. I really never liked Thorfinn as an MC until after the farmland arc. He seemed too one dimensional and boring before that point. The character keeping interested in the story was Askedladd. The first half of the farmland arc might be stale since it’s setting the stage of Thorfinn’s life after Askedladd’s and King Sweyn’s death but everything after that is way better than what we’re seeing now.

They teach in school what people did in the past, but they don't teach how not to do it, how not to be stupidly offended by everything, how not to be racist, how to better control our emotions, like ego, hate, arrogance etc.
Why are we going to school? well not for your own benefit. Meditate on that.

I honestly don't like when people do this. All the anime are different, not to mention this is literally just a personal opinion. All the anime are great in their own right. Literally. They're all different genres and comparing them is crazy. It's not better than them, you (and people who also like what you like) just feel that way.

Great video about Vinland Saga. I am glad that you cover this manga, which is kind of underrated, and the horrible side of wars.
However, I think you are misunderstanding about the issue with toxic masculinity, it is not about men should not be strong in physically, be dependable or appear manly. The issue is that most men was taught to control and suppress their emotions, act in such certain 'manly' ways, to be the sole pillar of his family, and look down on women as submissive beings who only belongs to kitchen (hence the 'make me a sandwiches' meme). For example, how many times are you told by your father/peers that men should not cry or you are not a real man, or men should not wear certain colors because they are too feminine, or men should not share their hardships or you are not dependable?
The whole Vinland Saga teach readers about toxic masculinity from right at the start with the Viking culture, men wages war, men are taught to wage war and to die in wars, gloriously. Thorffin indirectly killed his father also because of this 'fantasy of war' aka the toxic masculinity built in their culture. The development of Thorffin as a character is a story of a young boy growing up in the environment of toxic masculinity, then growing out of it. At the end of the farm arc, Thorffin risks his own safety to get hit by King's guards to meet the king, his old friend, showing that his realization that violence is not always the answer, even though he is fully capable of slaying all of them. In the next arc, the author introduces a bunch of bad ass, independent women (Hild, Ylva, Gudrid, Hattrgred) who were left behind, manages their lives and families by themselves without those 'strong' men, who are too busy with their wars for 'bullshit' reasons, breaking the imagine that has been preaching to all men that women are weak and needed to be protected.

AnimeUproar, I feel like recommending to you "Zambot 3" after watching this video. It is a mech anime from late 1970s and directed by Tomino Yoshiyuki two years before he made the first Gundam. As old as the anime is, it has surprisingly sharp criticism of the thinking that "peace can be achieved simply by wishing for it/ being peaceful" (and criticism of the opposite end of the spectrum at the final episode).
It may be difficult to watch at first, with its very old animation and storytelling, it can be enjoyable and emotional enough such that when I watched it recently it brought me close to tears in few occasions.
