Shoutout to the kid in the background at 4:20 learning Ollies, it's always cool when beginners can go to the skatepark without worrying about what other people might think
i think it’s worth mentioning too that the contact patch on a round wheel gets wider as you wear it down, which kind of compensates for the wheel getting smaller!
The reason I like 56mm conical fulls is because London's streets are crusty af, and rough and crumbly. A fat square wheel hardly ever hangs-up, but is harder to skate, you cannot get away with not popping your board with clean snap - round wheels are way more forgiving but they're always getting stuck in cracks and shit.
I got two wheel setups, one for cruising and other for tricks once i get to the spot. Cruising i run 60mm 78a sqare. I'm more into transition, so runing natural higher trucks does not bother. But man, big soft wheels changed the game for me. Since got them I have not pebbeled into the shadow realm neither once.
At the age of 33 hearing you list all your body discomforts crack me up as I can totally relate. Started skating again and was met with a bunch of new pains I didn’t experience at a younger age.
I feel like since square edged wheels have more surface area it’s preferable to not slide out as easily imo. I’ve noticed when turning sharp going fast on small round wheels with a small surface area I don’t have as much control. I really like that you’re making videos like this touching on both sides because for rounded wheels I prefer them for technical skating like ledge dancing. Thanks Ben!
I prefer the way round wheels look but after going back and forth the last few years I am definitely going with square. Smoother ride and better lock ins for sure, I haven't noticed a difference with flip tricks but I ride my trucks really loose so that might have something to do with it
Good to see you again dude! Hope life’s treating you well! 👍👍 Edit: I always like how you point out how just the aesthetics can mentally make you feel more confident and comfortable riding. It just shows that your mental space can influence what tricks you can land sometimes. That’s rarely ever talked about, but it’s more important then most think.
You can never go wrong with the formula 4 classics. In my humble opinion the best wheel hands down. I tried the conicals and the radials but I didn’t like the way they affected my flip tricks. I went back to classics and it was the best feeling ever. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Awesome review Ben.
This is so accurate when I try to kickflip with conicals I legit sometimes don’t even pop lol but with classics I get a snappy pop and idk whats behind that but classics def do work better for flips

I absolutely love that you confirmed my thesis on using round edge wheels with 8.0" trucks on a 8.125" deck. That's my current go to setup and I love it.
thats what i used to ride in my late teens early 20s. When i stepped up to 8.38 i jumped from 139 indys to 159. Bc i wanted more hanger lock in and i wanted to do cross hanger nose grinds. I wound up gravitating to the SFW mike anderson and conical full shape....bc it was the only way i was able to still get great pop and load up pop similar to when i skated an 8.13. Yet my bag of tricks plummeted as well from the 8.75 axles in exchange for faster skating, bigger airs, and more transition skating/all terrain. Still TBH if i were to ride a smaller board id probably ride ventures or thunders just for the lower weight and more "street" oriented feel and response. I never had more tricks on lock though than when i skated 8.13 and 149 thunders and 139 indys. One day ill grab an 8.38 ishod symetrical board since it has a smaller nose/tail than a typical deck...finally got a set of 144 mid hollows to return my popsicle skating to a more standard form. If i like skating normal size hangers i may try 8.35" AF1s with an 8.38 deck. IF not ill jump back to 8.75 to try the ace 60s. To compare them to venture 6.1s and the 159 standards. Stuck with 8.75" for so long bc id ride them on a 8.38 or 8.5" deck...then a 8.8-9.25 shaped deck or quiver up once i got the ventures. So i just really got used to riding trucks that size regardless of my board. Now that ive hit 30 i want to put a setup together to see if i can approach doing a wide array of fliptricks i once mastered just for personal goals sake. Plus it would be nice to have a few more GO to tricks at the local pyramid.

I started with some 56 mm Spitfire conical 99duro 6 months ago. I believe they are 52's or 51's now lol I need to change my set up. I do rotate my wheels however just so they can wear down evenly. My next wheel set is definitely gonna be some 56's again.
Picked skating back up a year ago and went with the conical fills. Have no reference but I like them. Gonna have to try some regular rounds to see if I notice anything
I just started skating again about 10 months ago after a 10 year hiatus, so I’m right there with you! I skated classic shaped wheels for a few months and switched to conical fulls after that. Definitely lost some consistency in some flip tricks but gained some consistency in longer grinds. I’d say the difference is negligible in the short term but definitely noticeable over time as you look back at your bag of tricks as a whole. May switch back to the rounder shape for my next wheel. I also think growing up skating the skinnier rounded wheel plays a significant part in this discussion.
"It doesn't mean I hate your board if it has square-edged wheels. I don;t like *my board* if it has square-edged wheels." That's some solid general purpose wisdom right there
love your videos Ben. I always want to go skate after watching, but you're right about knowing when to skate when you're old, injured, or both. its the worst when you still feel young, but you're body has already taken some beatings. im 30 and usually feel good, but with my various ankle and knee injuries over the years, i have to know when something's not feeling right and take a few days/weeks off. it's hard, but knowing the balance is key. sometimes you gotta push through the minor injuries, and sometimes you just need to sit at home and watch skate videos lol
I absolutely love these videos that go this in depth on a specific topic. I am also super nit-picky about minut details haha, this helps me save some money on the trial and error haha
I like the tablet, light weight and stable. Conical full is nice but heavy. The radials seem more versatile all around. My push foot recently got plantars fasciitis. I stretch the calf muscle out to stop the foot from over compensating. Will eliminate the pain!
I had plantar fasciitis a few years ago and it took me forever to figure out that was causing it. I eventually narrowed it down to the squishiness of vans pop cush insoles. I don't know what shoes you're skating, but if you're skating vans maybe try something more solid, and with a raised heel
@@unity679 I've been skating sk8-hi's for the last 2-3 months and I think that's exactly the issue, never had it before trying vans and popcush insoles. Thanks for the tip.
I definitely skate round wheels for sure. I’ve been skating bones 53’s pretty much all my life and it helps with my flip tricks and with doing crooked grinds.
I stumbled across your channel recently. Dude, I really enjoy your content. Me being an older skater, 53, it’s cool to see how you go about setting up your board & all the info. ✌🏻P.S.It’s true, Canadians are so nice!
IDK ever since i rode 99a mike anderson SFW wheels back in 2014....ive never stopped riding that shape be it any other brand that offers a 99a-101a conical full shape. Those wheels/shape contact patch were a complete game changer for how much wind-up....POP explosion pop i could load up on bs 360s and full cabs. Paired with bones med or bones hard bushings for an ultimate POP/platform off the run of your deck's nose/tail....insane ollie impossibles etc...The weight, contact patch, shape etc was just perfect for bs360s. Really makes the board feel stable when its spinning for 360 variations or big spins. Also they really encourage you to skate FASTER so much stability and confidence inspiring feel with a conical full wheel. They just make you want to really carve and slash up the park. Set up for some nice tricks etc they make every aspect of the session so fun IMO. Including powerslides
Good info! Just like you i hate the look of the tablette wheels on my setup. But now you convinced me that it’s more than a weight and psychological thing !
A better tipping point on classics for flipping but you're better off with tablets or conicals going down stairs and gaps because I'm sure without classics flipping the board isn't much of a problem if you have the trick youre tryinf locked so I'm sure it's not a huge trade off, I'd rather a bigger square riding surface for a higher chance at riding away down stairs and gaps with the less tippiblity upon impact if you land off at all lol. I hope that made sense.
Also, would like to mention the riding surface being pushed out on the wheel allowed me to ride a shorter truck like an independent 129 on decks that are 8" or more without losing stability.
Very important subject!!! For a few month i just ride with classic f4 101, i have a conical 52mm 99du to try but i will probably go back to classic. I like to try but i begin to have the same setup all the time.
I don't know if it was just a bad batch, but the last set of spitfire (round) classics I had were a nightmare to get the bearings in and out of no matter how many times I did it. Picked up a set of conical spitfires recently and it was like night and day.
Another great vid. I have noticed when doing 50-50s on curbs or coping, I pop out way more with a rounded wheel. There is definitely a difference in being able to lock in with more square wheels. I've also noticed that powerslides seem to be easier to get into and control with square wheels. Same time, I slip out less on transition with the more square.. Feels like there's more traction. I'm open to new stuff, but I guess I'm in the square camp. The easier it is for me to turn the deck over with the rounds, the more I land primo or magically end up primo with the edge of the deck in my shins. Keep making videos. These are great.
I ride Spitfire conical fulls, and i've been having the same problem you mentionned. I'm having a hard time locking in on slappy crooks, i think i'll switch to a rounder wheel.
Well @BenDegros, I have been going through some wheels madness too recently. From riding square wheels for quite a while now but in different sizes though I have noticed that mostly the riding surface affects the flipping of the setup quite a bit. What you mentioned that a round wheel would be easier to tip is related to the skinnier riding surface in my opinion and not the round edge. Because of a narrower riding surface the edge of the riding surface is further to the edge of the board which has an effect fot tipping your board an a tre flip or other flip tricks. Also the thing about crooks does not make sense to me that a round edge makes it easier to crooked grind. It is rather the riding surface again which allows you also o pinch better. Those are only some thouhts that went through my head recently. Cause I did not have problems flipping my board or crooked grinding on OG-classics. But I have tried the 55mm and there I have noticed quite a change for my flip tricks due to the weight and width of the wheels. Why don't you try to make a video on big wheels and flip tricks. You can try on 55mm classics and see how that effects your flip tricks and pinch though :)
I got jumper's knee too. I had an mri before covid and just an couple weeks ago and its gotten worse. A piece of cartilage tore partially from the front top (mcl), poping in and out behind my knee cap then tore off and went into the swelling behind the knee. The thing thats helping is resting with legs up above the heart, against a tree for example every 5 hours to allow draining. And weight training, lunges, backwards leg lifts, keeping the muscles around the knee strong to support it when jaring skateboarding against and into ledges and curbs and stuff. It only happenes to my front knee after lots of kickflips and slides and grinds. And compression socks and tensor knee brace with the side supports and knee cap cut out when needed helps.
Awesome video, Thank you Ben for your videos. Love your in-depth insight in to what makes us tick. Skateboard madness. I'm just about to try out some Sidecut wheels. Not 100% sure which side should be on the outside.
I have spitfire f4 classics 101a. I like them a lot but they're a bit slippery at some parks. Been thinking about getting conical fulls or something just to see how I like them. Thanks for making a vid on this topic!
Round wheels flip better only because the riding surface is smaller due to the narrow contact patch. If like me you use narrower trucks with square wheels, the board is gonna tip just as easy (actually more easily) as a wider truck with a round wheel. Square wheels wear down slower and won't change contact patch width as much as a classic shape. Tablets are actually narrower than classics at the same diameter so they probably weigh the same if not less. So yeah the only real advantages of round edge wheels are the grind clearance and compensating for a wider truck.
I like the blazer high og and mid sb. I have a couple QS pairs of the 77s so Indig those too lol. I dont have any lows. I need the ankle support anyway. I tend not to wear my lows if I am skating a lot. Its something to get used to
Been on my Tablets for a while now, you’re right I do feel very stable on my board but definitely noticed worse flips and heavier setup feel. You made me want to go back to F4 Classics!!
Great insight. I am currently riding the OJ Mini Combo Elites. I believe they are supposed to be an in-between round and square. First time on OJs and I am really enjoying them. For the shoes, the Tyshawn's have proven to be the best for me. I just picked up the new Lows but haven't tried them yet. I definitely understand the knee issues. I now wear a knee sleeve for my workouts and skating and that has helped a bit. Awesome session. Stay Rad Sir.
I use spitfire classic 54 mm for a year now and they have radial shape now; round on the outside but squared off on the inside with wider riding surface
never even noticed this till in high school I saw a kid wit square wheels, thought they looked so much cooler and now years later currently skating some Ricta Clouds, good conical wheel for all around
Got a set of slimeballs vomit minis, slightly wider contact patch, asymmetrical design with conical straight on one side and big radial lip on the other… perfect, for everything if you put the conical on the inside, like the cubic nanos, but even better because still center set, so you can rotate them… that’s some amazing wheels!
A lot of times jumpers knee is relieved by loosening up the IT band and quadriceps with stretching massage or foam rolling. Try getting a massage to your legs, ice when it's sore and foam rolling with deep breaths Ben.
I'm a wide wheel guy in general and I bought a set of radials a few years ago. Those became the wheels I learned to skate mini ramps on, and eventually the wheels I compared everything to. I love the F4 radials!
It’s funny because I absolutely love round edge wheels for all the reasons you listed but I hate the way they look and love the way square edge wheels look. So I’m stuck with a bad looking board.
I switched from bones v1 to spitfire tablets. They lock so hard into coping I struggled with them at first. On crooks I hate them because your have to push harder. But they grip a ton on metal ramps to prevent slipping out. I want to go back to curved wheels but tablets would be my choice for transition
I like to get my wheels off the ground before I do flip tricks I feel I like I have more control and the board sucks to my feet but its energy consuming
@@thesickness530 its easier, not better imo..once you learn to slappy on tablets everything is cake, you just have to slam into the curb harder with tablets.
I'm very curious to watch this video and see how wheel profile effects skateboarding. As an aggressive inline skater I find round profile wheels much more meaneuvrable and even helpful in getting less wheelbite on certain grinds. When I think of square profile wheels they just seem old fashioned in blading to me at least, they're supposedly more stable, but in my opinion they've got nothing against round profile wheels! I also find with round profile I can get them to wear evenly with good rotation, admittedly square profile don't seem to wear in the same fashion they just eventually crack and chunk out. Round for the win for inline at least. 🙌
i like really wide and round wheels, also 6:20, that explains why i liked my tablets with 8.0 trucks on an 8.25 board better because it balanced out that contact patch/pocket
Only tried stand street so far but very intrested in the tablet shape. Round prob better for tricks. Square for riding in gonna assume. Thanks for ur vids. Very str8 foward and informative. I ordered some nano cubics to try. Seem like a great all purpose.

the problem with skating injured is that it never heals and goes worst. don't ask why i know, I too am a 30+ skateboarder and have never been patient.

Also they really encourage you to skate FASTER so much stability and confidence inspiring feel with a conical full wheel. They just make you want to really carve and slash up the park. Set up for some nice tricks etc they make every aspect of the session so fun IMO. Including powerslides
Came here for knowledge even though I'm on quad roller skates, very helpful. Thanks!
OJ Little Doodies wheels were like the pinnacle of roundness in wheels. Literally spherical lol
I’m trying to skate through my planter fasciitis at 42 it sucks ! keep it up ben 👊
Really enjoying my nano cubics; best of both worlds - no graphic degredation or axle damage from wear and you lock in on slappy sooooo good.
Also, would like to mention the riding surface being pushed out on the wheel allowed me to ride a shorter truck like an independent 129 on decks that are 8" or more without losing stability.
So stoked at how good you skate at your age!!! Keep it up!
Very important subject!!! For a few month i just ride with classic f4 101, i have a conical 52mm 99du to try but i will probably go back to classic. I like to try but i begin to have the same setup all the time.
ben you killed that park just hit everything you saw and good to see you hyped skating
I don't know if it was just a bad batch, but the last set of spitfire (round) classics I had were a nightmare to get the bearings in and out of no matter how many times I did it. Picked up a set of conical spitfires recently and it was like night and day.
I have two sets of Spitfires and they're both tight af. Super hard to put bearings in. I think it's just normal.
I thought about an old video Ben where Ben mentioned the duro of the spitfires and this drops. Neat. I appreciate the comparison videos.
been skating for ever:) never knew about this great info thank man
I love Ben's channel. It's very motivational.
So just to be clear Spitfire has “Classics” and “OG Classic” wheels right. Two different wheels?
yea. i skate og classics. they’re very big. great for nyc streets. maybe not so great for weight. i’m really enjoying them though.
Ah okay got it. Thanks guys
@@Cauldronofbats666 what do u mean by weight?
OG classics are wide bois
@@savannahp3339 the wheels might be a bit heavier.
I ride Spitfire conical fulls, and i've been having the same problem you mentionned. I'm having a hard time locking in on slappy crooks, i think i'll switch to a rounder wheel.
After a few hundred slappy crooks, my conical fulls have started wearing into more of a lockin shape 😂 the outside edges have worn more rounded

This gives me a lot to consider, that I’ve never thought about before. Thank you
Well @BenDegros, I have been going through some wheels madness too recently.
I think the same way
everything I needed to hear to switch from square to round
Dude, love your channel, where I live in Canada it's hard to get
flatedge wheels. Your rad, keep doing UA-cam!!!
Awesome video, Thank you Ben for your videos. Love your in-depth insight in to what makes us tick. Skateboard madness. I'm just about to try out some Sidecut wheels. Not 100% sure which side should be on the outside.
They're cut on both sides.
Prod mentioned that with the classic shape his tre flip is a little better
I have spitfire f4 classics 101a. I like them a lot but they're a bit slippery at some parks. Been thinking about getting conical fulls or something just to see how I like them. Thanks for making a vid on this topic!
99as should be less slippery
Round wheels flip better only because the riding surface is smaller due to the narrow contact patch.
If like me you use narrower trucks with square wheels, the board is gonna tip just as easy (actually more easily) as a wider truck with a round wheel.
Square wheels wear down slower and won't change contact patch width as much as a classic shape.
Tablets are actually narrower than classics at the same diameter so they probably weigh the same if not less.
So yeah the only real advantages of round edge wheels are the grind clearance and compensating for a wider truck.
I just thought about those two different kinds of wheels today and couldn't decide. Thanks for that video 👌🏼
No problem 👍
I like the blazer high og and mid sb. I have a couple QS pairs of the 77s so Indig those too lol. I dont have any lows. I need the ankle support anyway. I tend not to wear my lows if I am skating a lot. Its something to get used to
Like how round looks but love how square performs
Best skate channel around! Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
🙌
Stay Rad Sir.
another quality post Ben, always a treat hearing your feedback.
You always give the best analyses.
Always wondered how you haven't done a video on that already :D
Nicely summarized :)
Great content as always ! :)
Ben makes my brain expand with skate knowledge.
come on mannn, we need these high quality well informed videos
we missed you ben
Ben! You should purchase some footprint gamechanger insoles. They will help with your recovery / preventing another injury.
that one switch fs flip 😳👀. Your sw fs flips are better than ur regular fs flips). Great wheel comparison too
As a transition skater I prefer round because it makes pivot fakies and getting off the coping easier for some tricks.
Have you skated the radials or radial slims? the slims are my favorite!
You been working out Ben? Looking shredded
Man, I hope i can skate like you at your age!!! Nice bag of tricks tough
I switched from bones v1 to spitfire tablets. They lock so hard into coping I struggled with them at first. On crooks I hate them because your have to push harder. But they grip a ton on metal ramps to prevent slipping out.
I want to go back to curved wheels but tablets would be my choice for transition
Lots of detail, thx for the knowledge bombs. I still like my lock ins :)
I like to get my wheels off the ground before I do flip tricks I feel I like I have more control and the board sucks to my feet but its energy consuming
I like both, honestly learning to do slappies w tablets is a pain, once you learn though its all good.
I'm trying to learn slappy 50-50's right now and I have 52mm tablets - do you think its better to learn on round wheels?
Solid pros and cons - loved the vid
i like really wide and round wheels, also 6:20, that explains why i liked my tablets with 8.0 trucks on an 8.25 board better because it balanced out that contact patch/pocket
Currently I have round wheels but I'm gonna try the square ones. Your Clips motivate me keep going thumbs up.
Only tried stand street so far but very intrested in the tablet shape. Round prob better for tricks. Square for riding in gonna assume. Thanks for ur vids. Very str8 foward and informative. I ordered some nano cubics to try. Seem like a great all purpose.
New video! Made my day!
