Hull to Piccadilly - the full journey.

- Hull to Piccadilly on a sunny Saturday morning. This route is due to be re-signalled so a last chance to see all the semaphore signalling between Melton Lane and Gilberdyke. I’ll film it again after the colour lights are up and working. See the Humber Bridge, the magnificent Humber, the longest straight track in the country - nearly 19 miles between Brough and Selby (you tell me in the feedback if you know different). The recently refurbished Selby swingbridge, the now redundant loading yard at Gascoine Wood where a constant line of MGR trains loaded coal for the power stations. After a steep climb all the way to Garforth Moor, the line levels out before dropping into Leeds and then finally, the demanding route over the Pennines to Manchester. In order to complete the journey, I’ve had to graft the last part from Stalybridge to Piccadilly on at the end due to running out of memory in the camera but that has been rectified for next time. Nearly 2 hours of HD footage from the cab of a Class 185.

Re my comment Don, it’s because all other of you video’s have been so informative that I missed that on this video. No bull, but your video’s are head and shoulders above all the others on this facinating subject, Thanks.
Thanks Norman, yes I wasn’t offended in any way and appreciate your comment. If you view the videos in date order you’ll see that the very early ones had no captions and I was doing a lot of learning with editing too. If you watch the very early Scarborough to York video, that was passed on from a colleague but I tried to dub out a conversation between him and his conductor and made a dreadful hash of it. I still make the odd error and I’m slightly dyslexic so my spelling isn’t brilliant at times. I’m quite satisfied with the format now in that it’s my own style and it’s different to other cab ride videos. As a bonus, I give the advertising revenue to charity and it’s making about £500 to £1000 a month. Keep in touch Norman.
THANK YOU Don. What could be better? A scenic and free journey with no screaming kids, gits with mobiles or a guy or girl with a trolley trying to sell you a thimbleful of coffee for £2.50. Fantastic

Not exactly 'free' - whatever electricity you used to watch it....
You summed it up nicely there Mike. I quite agree, almost cathartic to watch.
Fantastic video, very detailed and perfect weather, thanks for sharing. I've never traveled that route and I can see I have missed something very special.
Thanks Don, Lovely views on a clear sunny day and a historical video of the old signalling in the process of being replacing. Looking forward to post new signalling and with new rolling stock next year.
Thank you Don,,, being originally from Hull myself and travelled this route many times, ive been on the look out for a Video like this,, thank you once again
I’ll be doing the return journey soon with the widely requested captions.
Excellent footage. Nice and crisp n clear. Really enjoyed the ride
I used to live in Huddersfield. Lovely to see a route I knew well. Thank you
This is amazing to watch! I grew up in Brough (the first stop) then moved to Leeds I haven’t been back to Hull/Brough in about 15 years it looks different thank you again for making this
Thats old footage James. I’ll update it soon.
A nice and comfortable speedy ride. Beautiful landscape on the trip. Thanks Don!
You’re working your way through them now Martin 👍
This is great! Thanks for uploading..
Thanks Don, very good video, enjoyed it very much.
Another great video. A route I know well, live in Hull and have family near Liverpool. I well remember this type of view from the old DMU's when I could bag a front seat, even upgrading to first if I had to, lol.
Another great journey, did miss all the info as we travelled along
Yet another great trip, thank you. One huge advantage of your videos is the 'clear ahead' view. By chance, when making my first visit, in early Spring 1977, I realised that, with all the lineside trees and cuttings, I would rarely see the views in late Spring through to late Autumn. My later visits were in Winter, because of my Summer holidays here.
Thanks Bruce. I go to a lot of trouble to try and get very clear footage.
Absolutely brilliant and I think the class 185s are superb

Thank you, fantastic video - subscribed
Fantastic Videos Don. Thank you for uploading and sharing. 👏👏👏
I really miss working these 185s! Particularly on this route, Hull was my favourite!
Lovely to watch through a clear wind screen.
Somehow your great videos bring back the days when train travel was exciting and a real pleasure. Not the overcrowded bind it is these days.
I like your alias, we could form a club!!! Glad you enjoy the videos.
Thank you Don, and I would be up for that :-) Keep them coming, they are great.
Thanks Don for this one, I never actually got to travel on this line to Hull, great video footage.
Glad you enjoyed it. A new version of that is coming soon.
Brilliant. Thank you.
That's a long ol' straight from Brough to Selby!
I love walking the footpath that runs between the railway and the estuary as it leaves Hull behind.
I’d quite like to walk along that myself Steve.
Wow, great work!!!
I love the videos with blue sky
Very good to see you go through Selby my home town
I will be going through about 15:10 on my way to Hull on Sunday.
Really interesting viewing, from a perspective very few people get to see! Also 'reverse train spotted' my industrial unit just before Batley. I think I really need to put up a sign at the back for punters! Thanks for uploading it's completely different experience to what you see as passenger.
I love a train ride just like Bradford Forster Square train to Leeds and is even more relaxing from here😀
Great videos Don
Although I grew up during the steam era I thourely enjoy your vids but what strikes me about them is how badly we in the stoke-on-Trent area our rail service especially on the Crewe to Derby line many stations were closed under beaching my nearest station was Meir and it was a sad day when we lost it the ancient stock is so slow the journey from Crewe to Derby takes over 2hours.
What I take in from your vids as you travel through many northern cities is how vibrant and modern they are and your added information on the past history of your various journeys is fascinating you must enjoy your job, thank you.
I could retire Fred but I’ve taken a job share and enjoy going to work. I just like being about the railway. I reckon you did too or you wouldn’t be watching these. Thanks for your feedback and comments.
Agree looks very different coming back the other way, the Humber did look beautiful in the sunshine and now have the route firmly in my little brain. Thanks Don for a stunning upload.
There you go Steve, we’ll have you signing it! I summer the sun rises exactly dead centre over the bridge and it looks fantastic.
@@doncoffey5820 - All the best Don, replies greatly appreciated.
Superb, Thanks for sharing
Thanks Norbert.
Terrific videography! Good watch on Thanksgiving. Thank you so much.
Thanks Thomas. I’ve got newer footage of that route which has all been resignalled. I’ll edit it when I get chance.
Don Coffey I think I have seen a video of at least some of it. Stuff disappeared over a weekend or some such thing. I am getting so I sometimes know where we are. Thanks, Don.
awesome brilliant video
Just got around to watching this one and it's surprising how much I now miss the captions. Still a great journey though, thanks Don.
I've travelled between Leeds and Manchester many times but the eastern section from Hull is still all new to me.
The captions came through feedback. They’ve all got them now!
Great video.
Another brilliant video!
Thanks Henry.
Just found your videos absolutely fantastic. Thank you for posting it. Some beautiful scenery to
Smashing video
Lovely. What better way to spend some time with a bottle of wine :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
nice countryside, good trip, many thanks.
My pleasure, thank you.
Thank you for the great videos. Been to UK a few times, but only ridden the trains twice :(. First time was numerous journeys from Liverpool Street to Billericay back in 2001 and Paddington to Maidenhead in 2014. In reference to longest straight track in UK, here in Australia we have the longest straight track in the world across the Nullabor Plain - 478Km (297 Miles).
Keep up the good work.
Regards, ... Ian ...
You could lose our little island in the outback and nobody would know it was there! Thanks for the kind words.
Excellent.
Early days Coffey, nufink on screen but still superb, thank you. Don't know why Iv'e only just found it!
That was the first full length video I posted and it was recorded on a car dashcam. Think of it like a Charlie Chaplin movie compared to Iron Man 😀
thank you for sharing this vid i realy enjoyed watchin it awesome i have just subscribed to your channel
Cool! Cheers from Brazil
Thanks for joining us Fabricio 👍
some lovely looking houses/cottages along side the railway line
There are. Some in very remote areas which has a lot of appeal.
great video (from italy)
Amazing how flat the east of England is. It really is very beautiful.
I’m just working on a run to Lincoln and that is flat too.
It will be interesting in the not so distance future to compare this video with one made after all the changes that are about to be made with the Trans Pennine Upgrade
Well I’ll certainly record it again after any significant changes Dixie.
26:19 RIP Bird
Superb ride from Hull via Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly on a fresh summer's morning. Shame there were no trackside information, but still very enjoyable.
Thats an old one. I think you’ll find there is a later one with captions.
Loved the video journey through some superb countryside. Great quality. Any chance of captioning the stations as we pass through?
Hi Don. Thank you for this video. The signal box at Broomfleet was the first one I worked after signalling school (apologize if I ever held you up there!). I worked it for a year before heading down south. It was nice to see the box again still working. I will check out the video of the resignaled line in the near future. Thanks again.
Oh it was you was it ;-). Just kidding. It was usually track circuits and crossings playing up if I got stopped. The new system had its moments but its settling down now. If you contact me by messenger I’ll send you a link to the re-signalled version.
And another fantastic journey Don. I never get bored with these, whether I'm familiar with the route or not. As far as I remember, I was only in Hull twice *but* I arrived the first time behind a Deltic on a service train ~ none of that railtour nonsense, and the second time, on the paddle steamer *Lincoln Castle* from New Holland, just weeks before she was retired.
If my memories of that Deltic run haven't been blurred over time, there were blue/grey Pullmans on that train.
It's just dawning on me ~ these trips were over 40 years ago.😢 Hull can't have made a huge impression on me ~ I've not been back.😬
Thanks for the memories Don.😬
Cheers for now,
Dougie.
Thanks Dougie. I’ve seen photos of Deltics at Brough and what a complex layout it was. Its just a shadow of what it used to be but I never get bored of driving over it. I will be taking the 13:47 this coming Sunday! Glad it brought back memories.
Sure I’m right in saying two of the stations were Leeds and my home town of Huddersfield (1:48:16) into video. Great video Thank You
I’ll be showing that run in the opposite direction with all the locations named. I’m just getting it all ready.
@@doncoffey5820 oh nice one, was going to ask if there was going to be one going back the other way. Great videos! Great to see these journeys from the cab, I travel between Leeds and Huddersfield so great to see. Was wondering actually, when you go through the tunnels like Morley and Marsden, do the trains headlights actually give you any visibility or is it literally as dark as the video?
From Hull myself and get back there occasionally. Always saddened by the Beeching Axe taking out the Hornsea and Withernsea lines. They had to go I suppose, not being profitable. That's the trouble with nostalgia. Those lines were taken for granted until they disappeared....
My daughter lives in Keyingham which had a station on that line. I can see the track bed clearly from her upstairs windows. The sad thing is, I bet it would pay now if it could only have hung on.
@@doncoffey5820 That's the trouble Don. Beeching was roundly condemned for what he did, and in hindsight we can see his errors. Much of the condemnation should be directed at the road baron Marples, who had a vested interest in seeing the rail network destroyed. Always comes down to money in the end. Some attempt is being made to restore lines, and the fact that enthusiasts have been so successful in rescuing steam traction has made it all the more worthwhile. We owe a debt of gratitude to these enthusiasts, and to the one man who made it all possible, Dai Woodham of Woodham Bros. We probably wont see the Withernsea line ever reopened, but we do have a few local lines that survived and now flourish under steam...
perfect conditions with the sun behind you
Scarborough to Blackpool via Copy pit would be nice one day :-)
Multe salutări de la mine Don Coffey 🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐

Well good for you for serving. I’ll be filming Paddington to Penzance soon which you might enjoy.
Don Coffey will certainly be keeping an eye out for that one for sure. Thank you for filming these journeys
I would love to be a train driver when am older but Driving a train is much different then driving a car 😄🤪🤪
what a great cross country journey, watched it twice, fab weather and shows what lovely countryside we have, thanks for sharing! Expect been asked, what recording equipment do you use, as great quality!🤓
Its a Go Pro. I tried other means but they can’t handle the motion when the train gets to 75-100 mph.

Blimey, you’ve got some patience. Thanks for compiling.
Nice sunny day, fast train, and feet up with a coffee...ty..good quality too. at 38:00 odd.....man thats some fencing...imagine having to paint that green again ?...yorks like green fencing ? whoever makes that fencing and sells green paint there must be loaded...miles and miles of it
The fencing was erected at great expense in anticipation of electrification. Cancelled for now, it may pop up in a future manifesto.
@@doncoffey5820 thnx for replying Don..really good video...btw add net to front ...wood pigeons make a good pie...ive become train viideo fan..(addict) even inspired me to buy new cam and go filming for youtube here in cardiff lots of good freight here 37s too sub`d
Not been called inspirational before Russ ;-)
Hi Don, love your videos, can you tell me what was the marshaling yard beyond Colton Junction called and used for? as Ive always wondered.
I bet this was a great run in the days of steam
Lots of fanny in Brough lol...its good to see parts of our great country you might otherwise never see....and people you dont know...sometimes wonder who they are what they do and whats their story....we all do our own thing and are oblivious to most other people ...UK roolz.
The caravans at 1.36 40 must be on the trackbed of the long-gone Guide Bridge avoiding-line that was cleared away in the '70s.
Thanks for flagging the names of stations passed through. Not. Of little use to outsiders who are trying to gain the big picture without constant reference to Google Earth. With such a simple addition, it would be a first-class video. Col. NZ.
It works for most people Col. Most of the newer videos start with a map but that’s one of the really old ones.
Nice ride. Quite long. I enjoyed it so much that I fell asleep for five minutes, and that too right on my bed. I dozed off from 0:55 to 1:06 version of the video.😪😪😪
I went from hull to picadillo before
Should have read all of your comments to see that the marshaling yard was Gascoine Wood , however I believe the long stretch is only 18 miles long, but I seem to recall its only on the Hull inbound side as there is a kink at Gilberdyke.
I think you might be splitting hairs.
Didnt know when 1st saw this one....see windturbibnes by estuary just after you pass humber bridge...my nephew helped install them,he works for subsidiary of siemens...not in estuary tho...he gets sea sick lol he and his missus live in Bilton whats gadget at 18:01 Don...looks like lighting ?
I enjoy all your content on this channel Don. I'd like to know what does the singular ping sound mean that you can regularly hear on the Hull to Manchester video?
If you watch, it happens on the approach to a green signal and a warning buzzer on the approach to a yellow or red. These are confirmation reminders, some of which require acknowledgement from the driver. Keep in mind that if it is foggy, we can’t see the signal until we are virtually at it.
Hi Don, only recently found your videos so just catching up, firstly highly enjoyable and hope you do not mind if I ask some more questions,
No1 on a journey like this do you do the return journey in the same train or a later one?
No2 in the winter after you have gone under the Humber Bridge and you are travelling along next to the Humber Estuary does the sea come over the tracks?
No3 if allowed could you if you have time do a cab tour so that we can see your office? thanks in advance regards Bill
Hi Bill. We sometimes change ends and come straight back but we often have a break and fetch another back.
I’ve seen some quite big waves on the Humber but never the big crashing breakers you see at Dawlish. I’ve never seen it on the track.
One of the conditions of allowing me to film was that I don’t show the controls for security reasons so I can’t help in that respect. I will do an overview of the unit one day but not the controls - sorry.
I’m really enjoying these cab videos, and I’m in Australia!! Question though, what/where were all those sidings at about 37:45
I’ll be covering the return journey with captions very soon but in the meantime, those sidings are part of the Selby Coal Field loading facilities. A large proportion of the coal for the power stations in the UK came from this area and the hills to the right (37:22) and left (37:45) are actually man made from mining spoil. The sidings used to home the loading facilities for what we call MGR (merry go round) trains which ran through an unloading loop at various power stations at walking pace without stopping. The last British mine closed a few years ago and all the fuel for power stations is either imported coal or a pelletised wood product called biomass. The hungriest power stations were all based not far from the Selby coal field and you can see Drax Power Station in the far distance to the left at around 23:00.
11:40 Babe in leather trousers at Brough station ;)
Maybe Neil but not something I would normally note in the text!
Dam she was hot
@Dr Moriarty That happened to me once when I was on a Metra train, hit a crow or something.
Great video, Don - In complete contrast to the bends and curves on this side of the Pennines - Out of interest, I note the speed limits out of Hull increased to 90mph quite quickly, but then decreased on the straightest part of the track back down to 75mph. I am assuming this is the limitations of the signal braking distance rather than curvature of the track! (as there aren't any!) - Do you think when the re-signalling is complete, they are likely to revise track speeds upwards to decrease journey times? And the fact you are driving a 185 that has 100mph capability :)
We’ve had sight of the new signalling and line speeds and not much will change. I had the area signalling manager with me one day and he said the signalling would be good for 100 mph. However, the track is badly effected by mining at the Selby end and is laid across fenlands at the Brough end so it would need quite a lot of work in order to raise the speeds. There was a plan to electrify it but when the Transport Minister realised that the new trains would be hybrid powered, that got dropped. The signalling will improve timings as there are some quite long sections so we have to be grateful for small mercy’s.
That answers my question about speeds too Don thank you. I think First group tried to produce a scheme to privately electrify the route but it fell down over issues with network rail over liability. Shame as there are so few over-bridges it would have been relatively economical
@@doncoffey5820 Great reply and very insightful - It isn't just a case of knowing whats happening in front of train, but also the under the train in mines. I guess an increase to 100mph would only give a marginal benefit anyway, especially so in the case of stopping services.
A superbly compiled video, thank you. I have subscribed. Please could you name the stations as you pass so I can trace you on a map.
Yes, keep watching for future videos - I promise!
after hull it goes brough.selby.garforth.leeds batley.dewsbury huddersfield.

Like the video. Only slight thing is I'd like to have something to advise on what the stations are that are passed through on route
Yes, I will be doing on future videos.
Wonderful! Was this to Piccadill, York ? (to Piccadilly Manchester Google maps shows over 2 hours while to Piccadilly, York about 1 hour 28 to 1 hour 45 minutes) Thanks, Dana.
it was manchester dana
Excellent video ,as usual, but disappointed with lack of notes re stations etc...
That’s one of the very early ones Ken. They all have captions now.
@@doncoffey5820 Thank you.. I viewed the video of the reverse journey, which was captioned,so job done !!!
Would the Ashford-Tonbridge route not be a longer straight? If I am correct, that's about 30 miles of straight track.
Still, great footage and love seeing more of this :-)
I’ve just had a look and I believe you are correct. Thanks for that information.
'Loved it, loved it, loved it',what a way to spend Sunday morning with storm Ciara blowing by and being in the sunshine.I hadn't seen this video before, brilliant the colours where perfect ,so we saw what you see.I have a question, what was the red train coming out of Leeds the same time as us? I haven't seen one of them before. Thanks Don!
Hi Val. That train leaving Leeds is a Class 333 belonging to Northern. When they were new they were liveried up in the Northern Spirit maroon so when they fell under Northern they just wrapped a dark blue band around them. They’ve just put them in the new Northern colours and they look quite nice. You can see that version in the Leeds to Derby video.
@@doncoffey5820 Thanks Don, now I know. I forgot to say, I missed the writing that you put up but I was able to look at the beautiful scenery, it sure is lovely up north.I live on the south coast.
It’s strange Val but many northern people have aspirations to at least visit if not live on the south coast!
Nice little Route Refresh on one of my core routes (Huddersfield - Staly) shame we (northern) lost the majority of the work 😑
Northern losing the route is down to the future plan. All TPE trains are ready for digital signalling so Diggle will be primarily our route as that will get digital signalling (where trains move forward in hypothetical boxes) and Northern will focus on the Calder Valley line.
@@doncoffey5820 I know Don, its just a shame because we did provide a decent service along the route. I feel the dft could've looked at getting better use out of the passing loops at Marsden and Diggle, and also maybe putting a new one in...
I guess the long term plan will accommodate a 7th or 8th train but only if they can use digital signalling. I quite liked Cheshire Lines to Lime St but thats only a diversion now for us too. Progress!
@@doncoffey5820 Its good that TPE have seen sense in December and got a stopper starting from Hudd to Picc and vice-versa (albeit missing out Mossley) it's almost like our service was...
I don' know about long tunnels and no bright headlights to see if you have a clear line. Here in Australia we have to use high beam day and night everywhere.
It’s a lot better than the GoPros would have you believe Robert. Especially now with the twin ultra bright LEDs.
What a fantastic alignment, mostly arrow straight except through Selby where it doesn't matter, so why are speeds so relatively low as far as Leeds?
Class 185s are restricted to locomotive speeds due to the bogie/axle weights. I’ll be reviewing the technicalities of 185s in a future video.
probably the best example of a well kept railway in u.k .
precision fencing , perfect track . great stuff !
That's some line from Brough to Selby !! Was it built by the Romans? lol
It's a LONG WAY to Piccadilly... ;) But the video is very nice all the same.
A hundred miles!
Is that all? ;) (There's a reason why Australia has been nicknamed "The Big Country")
This must be the ultimate driving job, no traffic jams, no noobs trying to cut you up or brake check or turn without signalling. Anyway that is a lovely route and beautifully captured by you. Is it possible though to caption the station names as you pass through? so that we can enjoy the route even more.
I’ll be doing the return journey soon with captions. I may re-visit this one at a later date.
Thanks for reply, I look forward to that journey at a later date.
I'll look forward to your journey with captions. Can you indicate in the title of your videos if they have captions? I find the videos with captions better to watch.
Yes, will do.
No traffic jams! Ha. Plenty of them at Piccadilly.
26:15 RIP bird
It happens a lot I’m afraid.
At around 00:26:17 there was a smallish hawk/falcon that tried to land between the tracks in front of the loco. SMACK!!! Sorry to see that. :-( Just past the 75 MPH sign.
It happens quite a lot Sadie. I don’t mind pigeons so much but we get buzzards and owls which I positively done like dispatching.
26:15 RIP pigeon
Happens frequently I’m afraid George.
great video... Does a driver do the full journey or is it split for example mancheter to cleethorpes...thanksh
The Cleethorpes line is covered by Sheffield and Cleethorpes drivers and they drive the whole route. We at Manchester drive to Hull from Manchester in one hit and our Scarborough link drivers do Scarborough to Lime St in one. Our West link do Manchester Airport to Edinburgh in one hit too. Probably our longest route.
Hi don, what's those sensors in between the train tracks and pings the Inside of the train cab when the train goes over them, are they speed sensors or what....cheers Don.
All of the sensors and track equipment are discussed in various videos Mazar. Some are warnings for signals and some are overspeed sensors.
Great work Don. Can you do Driver eye view between Glasgow to Manchester
Yes but I’m waiting for the 397s to be up and running.
Ok
I think the TPE class 397 are running between Newcastle from Manchester or Liverpool
Those are 802s. The 397s are pure electric and will run up the west coast only - no Newcastle.
Oh
I’ve done that run. My only slight criticism and you only get sustained 90 mph running for a small section between Micklefield Jct and Crossgates
Yes, its all up for line speed enhancement but we’ll have to see what the coronavirus does to the budget first.
great video... Does a driver do the full journey or is it split for example mancheter to cleethorpes...
Some of the speed signs are prefixed SP. What is that, self-propelled?
No, actually it means “Sprinter" which refers to a generation of lightweight passenger trains (sorry is you know that but I’m not sure which country you are from). You will also see signs that say “MU” which also refers to those lightweight classes. They cause very little disturbance to the track bed and are often allowed a higher speed. Our Class 185s (like I drive) have very heavy axle weights and are restricted to the same speed as heavy locomotives.
