Thanks for posting this, I live near Heathrow Airport in London and was used to hearing the BA Concorde departure to New York every day at around 11.00 am. Now shes gone and my only regret in life is I never flew on her.
The Concorde that went to Rockford was Registration Number G-BOAF, and it has quite a history. It was the last Concorde ever to be built, in 1979, and also made the last ever Concorde passenger flight on 26th November 2003, when it took off from London,Heathrow, and after a final short Supersonic flight over the Bay Of Biscay, landed at Filton Airport in Bristol UK. Bringing to an end the era of passenger Supersonic travel, at least for now. It was also chosen as one of the aircraft to take part in a 4 Concorde formation flight on Christmas Eve 1985 to celebrate 10 years of commercial Supersonic travel. A less illustrious event in its history occurred on 12th April 1989 when most of the Upper Rudder on the tail, broke away from the aircraft while it was travelling at Supersonic Speed, on a flight from Christchurch, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia. Although the Flight Crew said later that the Aircraft handled without any difficulty.
WELL SAID, IT IS NOW ON PERMANENT DISPLAY AT HER NEW MUSEUM HOME AT FILTON BRISTOL, HER PLACE OF BIRTH. LAST YEAR I VISITED ,AND WENT ABOARD HER. FANTASTIC.
Being a Londoner and having flown on Concorde i miss seeing this amazing aircraft. I saw it on approach to Heathrow every evening and i could set my watch by it. Aviation advancement truly went in reverse with the retirement of this icon.
I was driving on the by-pass and came up on a bunch of vehicles stopped along the road. Just as I was going through there I saw the Concorde on final with the nose down . That is one beautiful airplane and I have never forgotten the image of it coming in for a landing. There is a group working on restoring one which should be flying again soon.
A very memorable moment for the city of Rockford. We road bicycles over to the south west end of the airport in order to avoid traffic and get in close.
Yes I lived in Rockford for very many years the day that the Concord flew over at the place of my work Wesley willows retirement community the plane flight was so low that I could hear the supersonic sound of the Concord. 🙂😀
Very nice - i flew her into Detroit in “85” charter from Heathrow via JFK for fuel & special catering It was amazing to see thousands of ppl parked just north of metro main runway - as we came in and dud a fly past - then landed Felt like a rock or movie star w/ tons of media outside the arrivals area at the “ Old” international term :) great flight !
supersonicbird11 we were lucky enough to fly jfk to lomdon 6 months before concorde retired. Like tou, felt like rock star, and kept finding excuses to leave and re enter the lounge at jfk :)
I know - we flew out of Dulles - LHR and the lounge was across the hall - so we got the stairs .. Great fun to relive - Was just ok Not like Heathrow lounge w/ facials and pink champagne & really good food ...and direct access to the Rocket
Yes, happy days and brings back memories of our long weekend in new york which was the reason for the flight. Need those memories as looks like travel is postponed for quite a while to come
..as an EUROPEAN i'm thankful for daily regular Flight's went to NY and back and holiday-flight's to BARBADOS ... so Speedbird's OLYMPUS could shak'in the dust and rattle the North-Atlantic waves ... :)
The Runways are long enough. British Airways asked O'hare if they could land Concorde there with a view to starting a charter service, but were denied by Airport Officials due to concerns over noise polution. Rockford seized on the opportunity to invite them to land at their airport with a view to starting their own charter service, and putting themselves on the map. Unfortunately for them it never happened.
It was “our airport is better than yours” to O’hare. Rockford’s airport runway is long enough to handle Concorde flights and it would have been a major coup for us. But they decided service to Rockford was not the amazing thing that service to Chicago was and we didn’t get anything of it. Our mayor got to ride on the plane though.

oh ok, now the airport just built 2 repair hangers, and already got a new cargo airline coming in, so I hope that that works.

I thought the U.S. banned the Concorde, because of its big ol' sonic booms it produces when flying across the water or land!
It could still fly subsonic
