Only in Paris can the entrance to a subway station be a thing of beauty. I've not yet been to the French capital, but I can tell you, sight unseen, that the Hector Guimard-designed gates are my favorites of the city's entire subway system.
Everything about the Paris metro is unique and interesting. Its fame, its history, its architecture, the fact that some trains run on rubber tires, the station names that are intertwined with the city's history. I'm absolutely in love with it.
If my French studies ever amount to anything, I'll be looking for these. "What would a purely modern style look like?" That's a good question. I associate abstraction with modernity. I've never thought about it before, but it makes sense because there's nothing new under the sun - everything's been done. To be new is to be undone (so to speak). It's cool to consider. Loved the visual metaphor detail at the end and the many examples of historical / modern styles throughout.
Art Nouveau was a really revolutionary change in all aspects of artistic culture at the beginning of the 20th century when a complete change from 19th century was needed. It’s not just subway entrances. It also covered jewellery, furniture, paintings, posters and even such minor items as theatre tickets. The term ‘Art Nouveau’ was first used in Belgium though it rapidly spread throughout Europe. Maybe Art Nouveau was almost unique in having a recognised collective name whilst the movement was still active? Impressionism is another example but I believe these are exceptions. Most ‘isms’ were invented after the end of the movement: classicism, pre-Raphaelitism, post-Impressionism, cubism, futurism, modernism …. ,

Art Nouveau, un style merveilleux, révolutionnaire
Great video.
If I could go back in time, (with lots of money), I would travel to Paris during the Belle Époch. 🤩
