The F-4 is like a fine wine, it just gets better with time
I mean the thing is mediocre like the MIG-31. Both are Interceptors ffs. The F-4 was a bad fighter as it's radar was to hunt bombers at high altitudes which is why at low altitudes the AIM-7 was horrible since it couldn't differentiate ground clutter with an actual aircraft so literally it was a flying coffin
@@firepower7017 yeah I mean their success rate in Vietnam War was very less. Most of them got shot down by 2nd generation planes like Mig 21, Mig 19 and Mig 17.
@@AnIndianPatriot Not correct. Early on, Phantoms were solely missile launch platforms and were not equipped with cannons. In addition to the fact that the older swept-wing MiG-15 and MiG-17 could easily out-turn a Phantom in close air-to-air combat, the lack of guns made it susceptible to being shot down by those two Soviet jets if they ever wound up in a dogfight. However, the Phantom could still outrun and outclimb the MiGs, which more times than not saved its bacon. It wasn't until the F-4E (USAF) and F-4J (USN) Phantoms were finally equipped with onboard cannons - in addition to training schools such as TOP GUN and RED FLAG - that the Phantom kill ratio finally caught up to and eventually surpassed that from early in the war.

We live in the world where everything is sophisticated in way that enemy can use it`s electronic warfare to make your war machine useless. These old fashion planes are not so vulnerable than modern planes. I think that F-4 is useful still this day.

@@StrelitziaLiveries Well, the radar, avionics, countermeasures, and even the engines can all be modernized to bring the Phantom up to date. The only part that would actually be difficult to bring up to modern standards would be the aircraft's stealth capabilities. It's still a capable airframe, it just needs it's internals to be gutted and overhauled.

Doing all of this requires an entire restructure of the airframe and testing which may aswell be making another aircraft.
Might aswell just make new aircrafts or improve the current 5th gen aircraft even more

the F-8 also stands in the same position as the F-4 with being able to kill more migs in a single day than some F-4s did their whole service

The Phantom was one hell of an aircraft, and they’ll be missed once they are totally phased out of service. For all those who flew this wonderful aircraft, whether it was during the Vietnam war or sometime after, thank you. You’ve kept this legend alive. Thank you to the ground crews, who kept this beast in perfect condition.
DEON #Group zero well the F-4 has a positive kill loss ratio in air to air in Vietnam (151-41) unlike the MiG-21 (85-95) and in total it has a much better record than the MiG-21, also I don’t know where you got the MiG-21 having a 2:1 ratio against the F-4. Correct me if I’m wrong.
@@ethxzo In reality the F4 was very terrible. MIG pilots developed a strategy to herd F4s together so that SAMs can take them down. Many F4s was lost and remember they aren't cheap MIGs so losing one alone isn't benefiting the US.
Fire Power701 I’m not denying that the F-4 was a bad plane, it and the MiG in comparison to modern fighters both are. Although SAM’s in the Vietnam era were extremely effective and all planes, may that be soviet or American, were dominated by SAM’s. What I’m stating is that the F-4 has a higher kill ratio in air to air combat compared to the MiG-21.

@@Flyboy207 F-4 is possibly the most respected (well-deserved) aircraft in Turkish Air Force, while most of them are retired there is still one fleet of F-4s left which has 10 years of service time left mostly, so farewell F-4, we will miss you.
She found her niche late as a Wild Weasel and as a Recon platform, loved the smoke, loved the noise she is a Classic for sure and one of the great military planes.
well i wouldnt say late for recon, they were flying the RF-4c in Vietnam, and retired them in 1995. Photo Phantoms Phorever!

It was a great Interceptor but why do people call it a fighter? It did bad in Vietnam as the majority of F-4 pilots that got shot down died so practically the Vietnamese overall had the least casualties as the MIG-21 is a one seater and it's radar works kinda?
@@firepower7017 Yeah it was a shitty fighter, but it was a fantastic interceptor. It was incredibly fast, years ahead of Russian MiGs in avionics, and just an overall badass jet. We hate everything about it, but can't help but love it. So iconic. It will live forever in aviation history.
Fire Power701 well it did originally suck in Vietnam but that was because the pilots relied on locking missiles and had less general skill and when the f-4s were given vulcan canons that kill ratio went back up to like 13:1

@@firepower7017 Its role kinda evolved with the later versions. Besides, Operation Bolo as well as the follow-up operations showed how good Phantoms could be with skilled and aggressive pilots. The F-4E, the ultimate evolution of the Phantom, sacrificed top speed for agility and it had an internal cannon, making it nearly equal with the MiG-21. Plus, when tactics for fighting MiG-21s were taught(like engaging them at low altitude only), the kill ratio between the Phantom and the Fishbed changed in favor of the former.

When you look at modern jets(Flanker, Fulcrum, Eagle, Falcon, Hornet, etc.) You feel like they're made to look good
When you look at the Phantom II though, you feel it radiate it's history, its life, and no matter how you look at it, it always looks ready to put MiG's in it's place

The Phantom was never really a fighter to begin with. It was a Interceptor being unfortunate to be sent to Vietnam to show it's potential
No engine rumbling. Grew up watching all the muscle and noise I the flight path north TINKER AIRFORCE BASE it was always awesome. Now live 2 miles away. Still the same now as in the 70's and still going. God Bless us all. For our HEROES.

Funny idea i almost wish was pursued: stealth update for F-4 Phantom, in same vain as F-15EX but at a fraction of the construction cost. But that would require manufacturer to be interested in reviving a design solely for export

@ac starfigther F-4s never shot down MiG-25. Both Iranian and Israeli Phantoms never got a chance to take a kill, despite several engagement attempts. But F-4s did become very successful Wild Weasels.

Nobody said Big Ugly shot down a MiG-25. They got a $hitload of MiGs-17 through 21 though.

And yes, MiG-17s, 19s, 21s, even Su-22 Fitters, they fell victim to the might Phantom. Heck, Phil Handley's supersonic gunkill is still one of my favorite aerial victories.

8 years of Phantom bites,and Suu-23 gun pods,and tons of Mk-82s,and Mk-117s and I still love the afterburner rings from those J-79s as F-4s get airborne.
I was a weapons loader on E models at George AFB. They could boom and zoom!
In the gulf war it was one of the most deadliest aircrafts that the enemy has ever seen in such a long time.

l worked the avionics on phantoms in the Air Force durning the vietnam conflict,C model ,D model,and the E model it was a great aircraft because it could do so many different roles
and do them pretty good,not many aircraft can say that and it was a mach 2 machine.

Sesini duyar duymaz şehir merkezindaki ana caddelerin birinde arabamı yolda durdurup 1-2 snlik te olsa arabadan inip geçişini seyretmiştim. Arkamdan çalan klaksonun biri bin para :) Ama olsun Phantom F4E'ye değer, 111. Panter filoya değer... Bir Phabtom F4ü seyretmek hoş bir hatunu seyretmekten daha güzel... Phantoms Phorever!!!!

The Fake news you hear about the phantoms was that they weren’t manuverable but the real facts are the pilots wasn’t trained to manuver the F4 due to the BVR only Doctrine. However the WWII pilots became ACEs in the phantoms during Vietnam because they knew how to manuver the phantoms. Also Dan Pedersen the founder of Top Gun and the other Top Gun phantom pilots took the kill rate from 2:1 to 24:1 in the phantoms during Vietnam !
