To be fair, Max Payne did very much the same thing. Not to say the voice was exactly the same, but both the voice and dialogue were very intentionally overdone, and the voiceover monologues were absolutely rubbing your face in it.
Honestly this is a perfect pilot for a series where Yahtzee gives him unabridged uncut unfiltered opinion on something that sounds exactly like it usually does, except I have no visual for what it is and can simply pretend it to be something I don't like.

It's kind of a fun gimmick to see if the game being reviewed can be identified without any of the specifics that would make it obvious. Wouldn't want to see it all the time, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Same. I thought it was going to be a _Hell Pie_ situation where he excoriated something for being too edgy in its style to its own detriment. Somehow the embargo reason is worse.
Among many other reasons, this is why I still watch ZP Reviews, seeing just how can Yahtz make an episode fresh and interesting. First it was Wolfensteins Limericks Then it was Dark Souls's James Bond cover up in Sekiro. And now it's like a literal guessing game. Delightful and insightful as always Yahtz and the eSCAPIST crew 🎉.
Here’s an idea for you Yahtzee: Put ? at the very bottom of the Bottom 5 and just keep it mysterious. The rest of you I’m guessing either didn’t even know that this game existed or didn’t care!”
I think the there's potential in having us play a guessing game every time you have to censor the game you're reviewing. Like first person to guess right gets a prize or something lol
@Solastique tell that to UA-cam. I'm not advocating the censoring, but also know i can't change the decision. So I can only hope Yatz censors himself in a way that's equally comedic.

"Complete with slow motion bullet dive. Which you'll swiftly learn is completely pointless because you can turn slow motion at any time and diving kinda messes with your aim. But hey, it looks cool." - So literally the same as in Max Payne 1 and 2 :D I think the only reason to dive in Max Payne was because you were unable to be killed mid-air. You could take fatal damage, but not you would not die until you land. Though I might be misremebering.
@@kr4ftt I still hope he keeps redacting it just to twist the knife. Put it in the credits or the description but don't give them the satisfaction of calling it out by name.

My biggest fear is that it might be Hellboy: Web of Wyrd.
@@tnarwhal 3rd person camera beat 'em up, licensed game, not quite out yet, rogue-like, even the flimsy context provided by the credits gag? I think this might be the winner.
I was unprepared for Yhatzee to get that close to the mic, weirdly not in a bad way.
Between the ASMR ear-bleed and the comprehensive review of ?, this video was incredible. More than 15 years later, he's still making us cackle like mad things.
We live in a timeline were Yahtzee’s swears are now a DLC. Thanks EA!
Player first!
An equivalent of Blood Pack from the Total War series, I suppose
Honestly, if it was possible, going back through all the old ZPs and making them redacted like the second game in this one would be really funny
? is almost certainly the Hellboy game. "Over the shoulder punching" is exactly how the trailer for it looks like
I may have died laughing when you described the voiceovers for El Paso Elsewhere.
I may now be a ghost.
v spooky 🥹
went to the steam page to watch a trailer and died right there with you
To be fair, Max Payne did very much the same thing. Not to say the voice was exactly the same, but both the voice and dialogue were very intentionally overdone, and the voiceover monologues were absolutely rubbing your face in it.
For other people from the future who are curious, the Myster game is Hellboy Web of Wyrd
I wonder if they’re going to Re-upload this review once the embargo date is up for leave it hanging out of spite.
That was the funniest episode of ZP in years, I am wheezing.
I honestly thought a game came out literally called ? and I was so eager to hear Yahtzee just tear it apart for the name alone.
Honestly this is a perfect pilot for a series where Yahtzee gives him unabridged uncut unfiltered opinion on something that sounds exactly like it usually does, except I have no visual for what it is and can simply pretend it to be something I don't like.
Now this is a revolutionary development in narrative presentation.
Web of wyrd is out now. I eagerly await the uncensorred review.
man this turned out funnier somehow with how they censored themselves
... You know, I always thought that "The Escapists" had the uncensored version in their Patreon due to UA-cam censorship.
The phrase “embargo date has been moved” has an air of “oh ye gods! we left the oven on too long” about it so they’re quickly filing down the fucky bits before release
It's kind of a fun gimmick to see if the game being reviewed can be identified without any of the specifics that would make it obvious. Wouldn't want to see it all the time, but it's interesting nonetheless.
4:34 love the captions having the protagonist replaced with other Escapist writers
At first I'd assumed the ? in the title was because the second game had too many bad words in the name for youtube to allow it in a title.
First it was Wolfensteins Limericks
Then it was Dark Souls's James Bond cover up in Sekiro.
And now it's like a literal guessing game.
Delightful and insightful as always Yahtz and the eSCAPIST crew 🎉.
Ok we NEED an extra punctuation on the story of "?" and the Embargo. This story sounds juicy.
Xavier Nelson responded to the review on Xitter. He was pretty happy to be featured. He seems like a chill bloke.
As a consolation, Yahtzee is gonna be brutal towards Hellboy: Web of Wyrd during 2023's 5 worst
This episode was full of corporate dystopia. No swearing, embargo dates censoring, etc. How nice!
A lot of really funny edits and stuff I had never need on ZP before after watching every episode, great video as always
Before watching this video, I legitimately though the game's title was "?".
After careful analysis, I have concluded that the mystery game is _Half-Life 3._
Here’s an idea for you Yahtzee:
Put ? at the very bottom of the Bottom 5 and just keep it mysterious. That way, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to deploy this line:
“Some of you already figured out which game the question mark was referring to, you clever little viewer you! The rest of you I’m guessing either didn’t even know that this game existed or didn’t care!”
I'm pretty sure that second game is Hellboy: Web of Wyrd.
Any up and coming supernatural over the shoulder rouguelites gonna be sweating rn
Wow what a savage takedown of Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Embargo date changes.
Yahtzee: Oooo, a challenge.
I think the there's potential in having us play a guessing game every time you have to censor the game you're reviewing. Like first person to guess right gets a prize or something lol
IDK man, the censored paste-overs are hilarious and honestly this is probably the better version of the video as a result.
Oh sweet Christ it's the Hellboy game, isn't it? Oh no, I was hoping that'd be good
I made the mistake of watching a Hellboy movie once. Never again.
@@iambicpentakill blasphemy, the two del toro Hellboy movies are great
I love how the second part of the review unintentionally sounded like a silent Hill review
Is that the same Xalavier who made the now infamous tweet about Baldurs Gate 3 that spawned a multi-week shitstorm?
At least he's getting his wish: no one's going to be comparing this to BG3
"Guess the reviewed game with all identifiers removed" is a surprisingly fun game
I just want the censor to be equally funny as the swear.
@@negativezero8174 I think 30+-year-olds can handle it.
@Solastique tell that to UA-cam. I'm not advocating the censoring, but also know i can't change the decision. So I can only hope Yatz censors himself in a way that's equally comedic.
@negativezero8174 bro I'm in my late 20's XD.
@@negativezero8174 Thank you for the advice I will stop saying the fuck word
@@TheRedneckRoman16 I've always been bad at guessing ages, especially since people of all ages love MLP. xD
4:45 god I can only imagine EA as a youtube channel making videos that are partially censored unless you pay them more money.. (to unlock the actual content of the video)
Anyone got a clue what the censored game could be?
likely hellboy web of wyrd
battletoads
"Complete with slow motion bullet dive. Which you'll swiftly learn is completely pointless because you can turn slow motion at any time and diving kinda messes with your aim. But hey, it looks cool." - So literally the same as in Max Payne 1 and 2 :D
I think the only reason to dive in Max Payne was because you were unable to be killed mid-air. You could take fatal damage, but not you would not die until you land. Though I might be misremebering.
This format could be our new guess the game 🤣
"It's like Pac-Man having a Vietnam flashback" is an amazing description hahaha.
I like RTGame's way of just replacing swears with "UA-cam"
Didn't ZP do it first with the review of Void Bastards and something else I forgot?
ZP with microtransactions.... we truly are living in a dystopia
If the redacted game ends up on the worst list for 2023 I really kind of hope you keep up the redaction in that video.
read the end lines @ 6:33
@@kr4ftt I still hope he keeps redacting it just to twist the knife. Put it in the credits or the description but don't give them the satisfaction of calling it out by name.
@@MarkERoth hm that's a good idea, I think he will not do it though, because it will confuse the hell out of someone who didn't watch this episode
@kr4ftt that's a very fair point but he did do a callback of his joke for Duke Nukem forever in that years review so there is a possibility
I love that static over "REDACTED" too. Imagine having that show up and then the real reveal.
The closed captions are also cute. As the redacted names have been replaced. In one case there was (Jack Packard?)
UA-cam has finally started nibbling at your heels Yahtzee.
I checked UA-cam to see if Civvie had a video about this game, imagine my disappointment when it suggested this video instead. Yahtzee doesn't even know Max Payne was PC first and only released on consoles later.
Are you sure this is not just Yahtzee liking specific mystery/ detective games so much that it bleeds through into a Zero Punctuation episode, pushing us to deduce and solve the identity of the mystery game?
Game #2 is 100% that new Hellboy game.
How can you move _up_ an embargo date? Aren't those set well ahead of time? Isn't that a contract thing? Did they really give themselves the option to change the embargo date??
That's the most compelling self-promo I have ever heard
This... was fantastic, if I'm honest. It's, like, audience participation in a murder mystery dinner where the killer is a comedian and we get to relish in how much the murdered entity deserved all that it got.
I'm hooked. But better yet, I'm now subscribed on Patreon.
Honestly i would like to see a segment where where Yahtzee does these style of reviews where we guess what game he is reviewing through his dialogu
...Wait that's Hellboy Web of Wyrd, isn't it.
Hope the next notalgia boom are "Millenial" shooters made after Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Bioshock and Crysis
