You inspired me to plant some onions, just like you've done. Those, oregano and basil (split shop bought plants), are my first ever grows. You made it look so simple I knew I could try! Thanks so much
Great mi ds think alike! Am a fair bit further north than you, but nearer the coast, and I started all my tomatoes yesterday. I've sown Garden Pearl, Tumbling Tom yellow and Tumbling Tigress as I've taken responsibility this year for several hanging baskets in the complex where I live, and we may as well have colour from tomatoes as from flowers!
Looks like you have a lot of plants ready to be planted. My tomatoes are just beginning to germinate. I had almost given up on them. I'm only growing a few this year instead of planting a bunch of sees and not knowing where to plant them. I'm adding more flowers mixed in this year.
Looks good Ivan! I've got a whole bunch of shallots waiting for similar attention. Thanks for the reminder about frequency of sowing salad onions too. 👍
Hello Ivan* 😊 Mine are the same that I kept in the Greenhouse* so I've now planted them outdoors in their pre prepared raised bed* Always look forwards to your posts & learning so much* Thank you,,,Keep Up The Good Work* All Looking Fantastic* ,,,,,,Michelle West Midlands*
You can grow (almost!) anything in containers. I have a nice raised bed I can use where I live, but still grow many things in containers for ease of access, avoidance of pests etc. Carrots are a prime example, I grow them in deepish boxes supported at a reasonable height and guess what? No carrot fly! Also spuds, they are all in containers too. Minimises problems with slugs, wireworms etc.
Ivan, I've just read the post where you said you were, by mistake, sowing old seed. A few years ago, a teacher friend of mine was given a great many packets of tomato seed, all the packets several years out of date and very faded. She asked me if I thought they'd germinate, being so old, for a project she was planning with her pupils. I took a couple of the oldest packets which were at least 10/11 years out of date, and sowed them as normal in my little electric propagator. Well b€gg@r me if they didn't have a decent germination rate, around 50% at a guess! So she could continue with the project she had planned ... Since then, I've happily used old tomato seed, as well as saving my own. I currently have about ten different varieties, and can always offer seeds to anyone who wants to try for the first time. I only need to buy F1 seed, or something different that I haven't got or can't swap for.
Onions do best in a pH range of 5.8 to 7.0. Adding lime to soil 7.0 or higher would have an adverse effect on the harvest so check the PH first Thank you
These will be left to grow in the container for medium onions best not to move more than once so for bigger onions a bigger container or in the garden Thank you Deb
Hi, congratulations! Ive just applied for annalltnent, a few different sites, but im no 8 on the waiting list for the one nearest to me. God knows how long that will take but I will just have to wait. You will have to let us know how you get on in your allotment ! How exciting!

Brilliant Thank you Susan
Cheers ivan for the answer you gave but can you use lime with onions and garlic ?
Onions do best in a pH range of 5.8 to 7.0. Adding lime to soil 7.0 or higher would have an adverse effect on the harvest so check the PH first
Thank you
So will you have to move onions into bigger containers or leave as is ?
These will be left to grow in the container for medium onions best not to move more than once so for bigger onions a bigger container or in the garden
Thank you Deb
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Thank you for replying. I was given onion sets and never grown onions before, containers would be easier for me.
How many times can u move/ transplant onions?
Just the once is best as they do not like roots being disturbed too much so from cells to container or garden
Thank you Claire
