Comparing it to a sandblasting was a pretty good way to describe it. It was extremely painful when it hit the face, and the winds I experienced here weren't quite as strong as they were there. It was crazy windy/icy/snowy out there today!

My Father grew up in Cheticamp which is next door to Grand Etang. He said some storms lasted as much as 3 days. They build their houses to withstand the 160+ winds of these storms. They use spokes instead of nails and use lots of them

It was really bad but Nova Scotia still did not get the worst of the winds. The west coast of Newfoundland, specifically Stephenville area, got winds of over 180 kph.
Hats off to those hardy folk on the Atlantic coast.

Philip, it's southeast winds, you get one a week on average during the winter months but it's not everywhere that gets these types of wind, western Cape Breton and up north more, on average you have gusts of 150+km per hour and it lasts on average 2-3 hours, last week, for example, they had windspeeds of 187 km per hour, in miles per hour that would be 120 clicks...note: there are no houses with bay windows on that side of the house, lol.
