  • In 1969, BMW entered the modern era of motorcycles with three new models, R50 / 5 (500 cc - 24 kW / 32 hp), R60 / 5 (600 cc - 30 kW / 40 hp) Top of the series, the R75 / 5 (750 cc - 37 kW / 50 hp). The R75 / 5 was one of the fastest production motorcycles of the era, surpassing 175 km / h. The bar-5 series was born due to the efforts of BMW to face the competition of the time, such as Norton, Moto Guzzi, Laverda, Honda CB 750, Harley-Davidson ... It left just in time to meet the Growing demand for road motorcycles, following the elimination of the then obsolete models of previous years.
All models called bar-5 were manufactured at the BMW factory in the suburb of Spandau in Berlin. BMW had moved the production of all the motorcycles, there, from Munich, in the late 1960s.
The R75 / 5 is a BMW motorcycle, with a boxer motor of 750 cc, that was made in Berlin, Germany, of the Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW Aktiengesellschaft).
These motorcycles were, and are, very reliable. It was not uncommon, nor is it nowadays, to find BMW-bar-5 motorcycles that have never been completely overhauled and have more than 100,000 km. Such resistance was not common for the time.
In the year 1972 was introduced in the market of the U.S. The toaster model, so it was called due to its resemblance to a typical toaster of the time. Had the gasoline tank with the chrome side panels and had a capacity of 18 liters.
As usual at BMW, during the production period, a lot of improvements were introduced in the series. Towards the second half of 1973, BMW extended the rear of the frame 6.4 cm, which gave rise to what are now known as 1973-LWB (long wheelbase) models. This gave stability to high-speed road driving. In addition, this improvement in motorcycles allowed the installation of a larger battery behind the engine, while maintaining the kick starter.
Long wheelbase (LWB). The back extends 6,4 cm. The enlargement is visible at the end of the gimbal arm.
This change hinted at a successor. The series 6, went into production in late 1973. In 1974, BMW introduced the new models of the series 6, which offered some improvements, especially the front disc brakes, more and better instruments, and a five-speed change. R75 / 5 and R60 / 5 were replaced by R75 / 6 and R60 / 6. The 500 cc model has no successor. In addition it increases the series 6 with two new models of 900 cc, the R90 / 6 with 60 CV and the R90S with 67 CV. The legendary toaster was becoming part of the history of world motorcycling

    Technical data
All bar-5 models carry four-stroke boxer engines and are air-cooled. The camshaft, driven by a double chain, runs at half the speed of the engine and is located below the crankshaft. The valves are actuated by the camshaft through the pushers and the rocker arms. The 500 cc and 600 cc models are equipped with Bing carburetors of 26 mm sled type. The R75 / 5 comes with Bing carburetors of constant depression of 32 mm. As on all BMW motorcycles so far, the clutch is a single dry disc. All models have four speeds, electric start (optional in the R50 / 5) and start with pedal. The boot pedal is less robust than in previous models and is a frequent point of failure, most of the time due to an incorrect technique when kicking. It was intended for emergency use in the event of a power failure. When the motorcycle is properly tuned, a "5-bar" can be started by giving the kick starter lever by hand, and this, although it seems to require otherwise, requires very little force to start the engine. Unlike the bar-2 models, the bar-5 models are equipped with front telescopic forks, 12-volt electric system and alternator, tachometer and turn signals.
    Curiosities about the series 5.
Did you know that the R75 / 5 is the model with the largest run of the 2V boxer since the introduction of the series 5?
38370 units endorse it, followed by the R100-RS with 33648 (if we do not count the 6081 units of R100-RS Monolever).
