I didn't know dad heading bee balm would produce more blooms! Mine are almost done, so I will cut them back in a few days and wait for the show! Also, I have to get some elephant ears!!
A small gas tiller is a composters best friend. It stirs the pile easy and you and your new trusty pitchfork pile it back up. Thats right i said Pitchfork! Coveralls, pitchfork and Green Acres. Last year I piled grass on cardboard and watered, repeated to 4 ft. At half reduction, tiller mix and repile.. cardboard boxes in sheet form no shred, and grass. Fantastic compost. I did add scraps of kitchen after 1st turn but it was absolutely easy yard waste compost. Cardboard is wonderful stuff.
Love your garden!!!! I never look as good as you when I am in my garden! 😃 When I am done, I am usually covered in dirt from head to toe!!!! Ha Ha But I love it! And the Elephant Ears look perfect there!!!!! 👍
The (African?) electric guitar picking music under the elephants ears plantings is just another prove of your good taste (music in gardening videos is often cheesy imo). Really enjoy watching your videos and learned a lot already. I’m also in zone 6, but/although on the other side of the ocean, which makes so much what is shown growing in the videos applicable in my small front garden, so also very useful 😉
That elephant ear is crazy stuff. Totally agree about the mildew. It's the same with bugs you have to keep treating even when it seems like there is no problem or they will return!
Would love a video of how you make the magic happen with your compost piles in a future video. Wonderful information especially the way to help with powdery mildew. 💜💜💜
Yes! Compost is everything in the garden! tho sometimes i am thinking just buying it because it's a bit labor intensive. but i have so many weeds! don't want to throw them away :)
New subscriber here from Fall River, Massachusetts. Just wanted to say hello and that I look forward to learning from you! It's people like you that I appreciate very much for sharing the knowledge!
Very Lovely spot Yuliya! I Love all the textures and the different colors of green incorporated under the tree. I have a couple of elephant ears plants myself and Love them. Thank you for sharing! 😉
The elephant ears are a great addition there! I added the black ones near my patio pond this year, just love the look. If you have room for a chicken coop, they make compost fast, I barely used my standard bins, I just throw everything in with the hens. I been out scattering Cleome seeds in new areas and of course weeding.
Glad I spotted this! Very timely! Do you feed your Bee Balm? Mine are near my bird feeders, so, last fall, when raking up spent seed hulls, used them as a mulch to keep weeds around them from encroaching, & this year, the weak little patch had grown X4! Maybe they just apreciated the TLC, or were they nourished by the partially broken down matter, the lower layer of composted hulls, likely including some bird manure? How long can you leave the Elephant Ears in your garden, & will being planted in open soil encourage more tuber growth? Can't wait to see them get big. Will you repot them in fall & keep them as houseplants over winter?
I top everything (including bee balm) with compost or manure once a year. The elephant ears go indoors before the first frost and some i keep as tubors and some as houseplants. :)
Compost tumbler? Girl you work that shovel pretty good, where's your pitchfork? You need compost piles, you have a lot of flowers to feed. Another beautiful and wonderful video. So its high nitrogen for them. I've got them, never knew fertilizer requirements. Though last year ( im sorry to say this) I used urine fertilizer on mine. Biggest ears ever. I'd seen videos on urine as fertilizer and I tried it on the ears. Only I did not know they are nitrogen lovers.
@@greatgardensforall Please do! I was going to post the question but looked here in the comments first to see if anyone else asked. Would love to know how you made your structures. Thanks.
I'm digging a hole, a little deeper, dumping the garden wast and some kitchen wast in the hole, then I bury them with soil and I planted my plants on top of them.so far, it's looks works for me pretty well.
Waste of time...NEVER...even at 62 I watch everything I think I already know about, there's always a trick or tip I hadn't heard before. Holy cow that Elephant ear, how long would you say that was, you look like you're a tall girl, just curious about that ear.
Hi Yulia , do you do consultations? I am in zone 7a in Pennsylvania. Starting from scratch . If I provide pictures and video of the areas, could I hire you? Thank you, I love al your work !
And here i am trying for years and years to get rid of elephant ears because they pop up everywhere shrouding everthing....i cringe everytime i see someone plant them on the ground
I want to commend you for a classy presentation. Beautiful, but modest dress. I'm an older lady and not a fan of sexed up videos. I really enjoyed your presentation. Thank you

Totally agree, like with everything in life consistency is key 😃 I wish I practiced it everywhere not just the garden 😂
@@greatgardensforall Good point! That's an important key to keeping things humming along.

Oh you peeked my interest with the compost area!! Will you give us a tour and explain your process???
Will do!
Thank you🙏
Where are you located?? It's super humid here too!! Just bought bee balm this past year and I love it so much for it's color look and SMELL!
I am in Northern NJ, zone 6. Yes, love bee balm!
@@greatgardensforall yesssss! I'm in South Jersey!!! That's so awesome!!

Will they go yellow and smaller leaves during winter? Mine are right now, and also do you cut them back and respond for spring ?
I started more compost piles
thank you for the video.
Looks great! Can you talk about how you compost? I'm a new gardener and have not tackled composting yet.
I will make a video on my composting, something i wanted to address for awhile :)

I planted taro which I get them from Chinese grocery stores, they looks just same as your elephant ears to me. I hope it's the same thing?

Ha ha! thank you so much! Yes, i am not small, 5'8" so the leaf was 5' feet or so. Could wear it as a dress :)
love this
Do you store your elephant ears in pots during the winter ?
Yes, i will do a video later in the season.
@@greatgardensforall Thank you ,so much, for answering my question, love your videos too !
Are elephant ears edible food in Asian markets? Are they the same plants? Or different species?
Because they are look the same to me?
It's named taro?
Beautiful! Can you tell me what the name of the flowers behind you in the beginning of the video are? They are so pretty!
They are cleome and one of my favorites!
Y Garden I saw it for the first time yesterday in Paris! And then was watching your video and saw it again! I have to plant it in my garden now :)
Do you have to dig up the elephant ears at the end of the summer?
Yes, i will make a video about when the times comes :)
Thanks!!! Looking forward to seeing the video.
I didn’t do anything to our bee balm last year.. it is now April in New York.. should I do anything to them or leave them alone until they flower ??
If you cut the bee balm too low, can you kill it?
Hi Yulia , do you do consultations? I am in zone 7a in Pennsylvania. Starting from scratch . If I provide pictures and video of the areas, could I hire you? Thank you, I love al your work !
Since they are heavy nitrogen feeders, could I top dress it with used coffee grounds as fertilizer?
ngwww coffee grounds are a bit acidic, but you can add them to your compost and then add compost to your plants 😁
I have the shorter bee balm that only grows to 12" high, is it the same procedure?
Yes, same process!
And here i am trying for years and years to get rid of elephant ears because they pop up everywhere shrouding everthing....i cringe everytime i see someone plant them on the ground
ha ha! one person's trash is another persons treasure! they are not hardy in our area and super exotic. Where are you in the world? :)
