Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 4 - Wedge Linkage

  • Building a hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Fixing a bought hydraulic cylinder that had a mount welded on crooked. Fabricating the linkage and linkage mount for the wedge height adjustment system. Making pins for both the log loader table and wedge moving cylinders. Welding and bolting up everything and getting the splitter to the point where it's ready for it's first test run. But came short a couple of hydraulic fittings and couldn't hook up every hose needed to make it run. But I'll get there shortly. If (fingers crossed) I get it running properly it still needs a proper tow bar and stand. Also wood rack and conveyor-ish thingy. But all of that next time. Stay tuned!

@@zzzires5045 I bet he'll keep this thing inside when he isn't using it, or at least covered. I keep both of our splitters inside and the one didn't even have primer or paint on it for the first 15 years of it's life, still was in perfect shape, just surface rust. About 5 years ago (maybe longer) I gave it a make over, cleaned it up good and primed and painted it. Should be good for a while. I think the key to is keeping it out of the elements and UV, so don't leave anything outside if you can help it.

19:06 This part may cause some problems: It pushes the splitted wood up which will push the wings of the wedge, if the wings are not strong enough, they may bend because of this or the wood gets jammed under the wings.
Maybe it will work without problems, but in my view it would be more fail-safe if the wood has at least 1-2 cm to expand downwards, so it doesn't get stuck under the wings of the wedge.

Unless i missed something, that should be regular steel (the blade), if it is, consider adding a metal strip at the very edge that can be hardened. You could then use one of those coil heaters to heat the edge before dipping it in oil. One of the best blades i had on any spliter was made in this fashion. Not my idea, bought from a fabricator near me. I've run about 40 full sized trees through it, and it still retains a decent edge, haven't had to sharpen it once despite the quite acute angle. It's also considerably less work on the small 3.5 hp Honda with a cheapo pump that came with the og frame.

The blades look like they are Hardox, the replaceable edge of excavator buckets. that stuff can tear through rocks so I doubt wood will give it trouble.

very little use of the cnc plasma on this build? I´ve noticed all of the comments on other projects that they miss the angle grinder but the cnc is such a awesome tool! Maybe 50/50 work so people still can se that things can be made with easy tools but also that they really need their own cnc plasma. ;)

Just a question out of curiosity. I understand that the cutter part will be moved hydraulically as well. I've worked a machine where the cutter itself is manually risen and lowered. The thing is that it can be basically only risen without using your arms to move the already split wood from under the blade. Have you thought how to address that problem?
