Former Abandoned Complex Gets a New Life - Scranton Lace Factory

  • In 2016 I ventured into one of my first abandoned buildings and it was one I'll never forget. The Scranton Lace Factory complex was well known amongst locals and explorers and I knew I had to see it for myself. I could have made 12 videos here and probably not see everything, but I was lucky to see it before changes were made. Nine times out of ten abandoned places like this get razed and the land is redeveloped, but that's not the case here. Construction has been underway to recreate this famous property into Laceworks Village. Here in 2023, I felt it would be a good time to revisit this iconic place and to give a throwback to my earlier days of UA-cam. So come along as we revisit one of my first and most memorable abandoned locations and learn what the future holds.

You've evolved in your video content creator journey into quite the historian. The preservation quality of the history you've documented cannot be understated. You've done a fantastic job of incorporating historical photos combined with your own former and current videos overlaid with recorded location history and descriptions of each area of the place. Glad to see they have preserved and are planning to completely restore the clock tower. I love the beautiful architectural details of it. Too bad they didn't save the bowling alley, which would have been nice recreation for the planned new residents of Laceworks Village. Will be interesting to see the completed project one day. Great job on this video, Jay! Thanks for bringing us along!

Hi Jay, Thanks for posting this video. It's good to see they are renovating the buildings. From 1987 to 1992 I worked on their time clocks in those buildings. I remember seeing the cafeteria, barber shop, gym, locker rooms and bowling alley. They also had a billiards room. From what I heard, the University of Scranton, which was St. Thomas College at the time, used to play their basketball games there. I think it was the largest employer in the area at one time. Thanks again.

What a great throwback and that sure was quite the place! I watched and enjoyed all three videos and what a wonderful piece of history you have documented! It is so great how much appreciation they put into showing their employees with all those amenities. Love the iconic beautiful clock tower and also the cool logo, it is so awesome that they both will be preserved and restored. The printing machine is incredible and also so cool that they are going to use it as a memorial piece! The name Lace Works Village is a great way to give and show recognition and acknowledgement too! I can imagine that it is going to be a beautiful place once they are done! Fantastic video JP, thank you!

This place reminds me of the old Avondale mills in Sylacauga. Just about everyone in town worked there. They also had amenities for the workers plus a vacation spot in Panama city beach Fl. They had their own credit union so my husband at age 16 went in and bought his 1977 monte carlo. The houses around the mill was called the mill village and you would have your mortgage took out of your check each week. It was a wonderful place to work and times then were wonderful until they closed down. I am sure the people who were there the day the lace factory closed suffered like everyone who went through the same with Avondale in Sylacauga. It was gut wrenching.... I will have to check out your old video. ✌

Thanks for the update on the complex. I got to know about this complex whenI worked for the state of PA. I supervised the local agency that did energy conservation work on homes in the area. They used a small portion of one of the buildings for their warehouse of supplies and stored their vehicles on site when not in use. I am glad to see a major project was undertaken to reuse the site and make it useful again.

The bowling alley and gymnasium/theatre didn't make the cut unfortunately, but that building had a fire in it on the lower floor. They did keep quite a bit of the complex though. I understand that they also made plastic shower curtains and swimming pool liners too.

Great video. I love the older buildings. I could live across the street without a problem. The only thing that would bother me would be the people that come around for "unfriendly" reasons. I am so glad that they are saving parts of the buildings. You will have to return to show the clock tower once it is running again. Thank you for this update!

I'm happy to see that at least some of our local history is being saved. Though I am shocked that the government didn't just buy out every home and business in close proximity to the Lackawanna River in that area given the prior flooding.
Hopefully any future tenants are told of the past issues and have sufficient insurance coverage just in case.

Hey Jay ... I remember that video and like your other explores it was awesome and it was sad as it was due to be demolished I think, but now it looks like they are saving it and building in that actual site. I bet it was amazing to work there as it did have a lot of amenities within it. Happy days ... Your filming is very clear and it very sharp so yeah it's a wonderful camera. The pandemic has spoilt a lot of projects, events, hospital and care home visits, etc. Its got a lot to blame it for. Thank you for this update Jay it was an amazing informative video about the building and what the plans are for. I am really glad they have started work on the area and it will open up new jobs and new living places. Cheers Jay take care.

I'm not sure how often you travel out of state but if you like abandoned factories a city to check out would be Amsterdam NY. The city used to be the carpet and rug manufacturing center of the U.S. so there are many. As a kid, we walked through them to get to school and back and of course the usual mischief. There's also a clock tower building that's gone through changes. Very much like Scranton so I figured I would do a shout-out.
