Hard work. My great grandfather was a coal miner in WV. He worked all night. They called it the hoot owl shift. He was a sweet kind man. Wish we had some of his equipment left like his hat and lunch pail. Thanks Nate and Bonnie.

Very sad to know how mines where run back in the day. The poor animals and hardworking men. Thank you for doing a great video on some important history. Have a great big beautiful tomorrow.

Thanks for this tour. My Grandpa was one of the coal miners that worked the mines in eastern Pennsylvania as a child. I have a picture of him as a young teen standing in a shaft much like the one in this video. He eventually died of black lung that he got from his time in the mines. I feel like I have a better understanding of what he did now.

Thank you for this video Nate! My Dad was born in Duryea Pa. Story has it that my grandfather went down in the coal mines for only one day, came up and said never again!!!! Ended up moving with his young family to Buffalo and the rest is history. Feel like I have a good idea why he didn’t like it! Thx again Nate, as always entertaining! 😘👍🏻

That was alot of fun to watch. Another great video. The canary was very important to miners. My great grandpa worked in the mines in Scranton. I have alot of respect and admiration for them. My family has his miners helmet with a carbide lantern on it.

Hey, I'm a professor down in Florida. My mom's side were Polish coal miners. I'm using your video as a supplement to the actual virtual tour.
My mom's name was Bonnie :) Also the stake was used to stop the wheels of the mule carts. Often kids were trampled trying to incert them.

"Stay here with the Minions" hahahaha! Hey Bonnie :) Wow, I agree Nate...thinking about those beams and poles, wondering "how" they're holding anything up safely. Oh geez, warning poles?! I'd be outta there like NOW!! That man is the Thin Man, yikes!! LOL, Nate...only you can make me laugh laying on the bench!! Yup, I remember hearing that if the canary dies everyone dies, now that's really CREEPY!! Nate, follow the bread crumbs... Now, losing the group would cause me to pass out :/ Nate, these "people" are only making this whole thing scarier! Because of this tour you took us on, I am in awe and have such respect for Coal Miners

I come from a long line of nurses ( like Veronica ) and I can remember my grandmother saying all miners die of lung disease rather young from the coal dust . Kinda sad ! I bet they wear special masks now . I’m pretty sure W VA is the only place left with a coal mining industry or does Penn have active mines too ?
