It's almost as though it was designed as a horribly designed mobile phone game, released on console and PC, priced at 60 dollars. If the game devs were really sorry, why haven't they lowered the price?
Did you play the game?
Delete it forever
At this rate, Games are going to boot up on day one with an "We're sorry we couldn't reach the level of quality our studio and our fans expect and deserve" type apology instead of the title screen.
Thats assumes they'll even boot up.
@@Pyxis10 Lol, oh it'll boot...after the 50GB patch...the DRM verification...and assuming the servers are up, it's only several hundred dollars in microtransactions to make the game complete! Yay!

People keep buying them anyway. That new Jedi Star Wars game (or whatever it was called) launched as an unoptimized broken mess and gamers bought it in droves.
The apology will eventually be replaced with a message that says "fuck you, we have your money already!"
“Gollum is a shameless greedy disgrace.”
At least it’s staying true to the lore!
Nope, Gollum is writhe with green eyes and jealousy after seeing the game company launch this game.
I mean he leads Frodo and Sam into Mordor... He kept his word for his service. This company sold you a broken game after taking your money.
Seems a bit harsh on poor ole Gollum. He was only ever a victim of an ancient evil artifact. This here is just the excesses of capitalism.

And yet they still expect us to cough up 70+ dollars for broken, unpolished, and unfinished games
The apology should come with a refund option and a heavy discount with all contents included. Otherwise, it just rings hollow.
Games like this is why I don’t do pre-orders. I would’ve been pissed if I had ordered this before review got out.
Cause people keep buying them. These devs/publishers are responding to their market value adequately thanks to people not pre-ordering or waiting for reviews before purchase.
Take-Two's CEO reckons players are happy paying $70 for games because there is no "push-back" from gamers and all other developers say they will follow if Take-Two inflate game prices to a $70 standard.
I already knew this would be an unoptimized stutterfest when I read it was using Unreal engine.
Customers need to stop preordering or buying games at launch. This is the only way these game studios will learn to ACTUALLY FINISH a game before they release it.
(I know you won’t read this but you are an excellent UA-camr. Perfect voice, great screen presence, good insights and humor. Just wanted to say that.)
Yup, it's the best way along with refunding when possible.
Thy rush games just to show off to investers
Yeah, anyone buying on release (or worse, preordering) in this day and age of broken launches is simply paying the highest price for the worst experience. Meanwhile my patientgaming ass waits for the complete edition to come out, and I get it on sale, all patched up. Literally the only downside of waiting is if you somehow don't expect to live long enough for the complete edition to come out lol
All complex software has bugs. Some are known, but hard to fix and not very important. Namely great classic games in the 80s and 90s. It makes sense to patch bug fixes.
But another thing is software that has obvious bugs and bugs and design flaws that should be detected by the QA.
It seems developers have to do crunch time to meet deadlines (I sometimes did it for some companies). Maybe the specifications aren't well-defined. And instead of delaying or deciding to make something simpler (but good), the production cut corners, and bad results are accepted. Maybe the preorders incentive those practices. But very bad incomplete games were also made in the 80s.
@@PedroCouto1982
Which is why they need to plan stuff out more an not set lofty expectations that a lead to crunch, true, bugs can occur and even older games had them, but that shouldn't be a excuse to release a game that can barely function at a basic level.
Granted my words go more towards the publisher, since they ultimately have the say in when things ship, but yeah.
I'm not saying a Gollum game could not be fun, I am saying it needed a team that was passionate enough for it to be fun. Gollum is perhaps Tolkien's most complex character, while most fall either good or evil he is one of the few who is very much on the fine line, something that could lead to a lot of player choice in a video game.
I think a Gollum game shouldn't be like a generic action game.
He looks like an addicted schizophrenic criminal. Maybe designers should use those traits to let the players see Gollum's point of view.
For instance, the ring could make you feel more powerful. Or make you get some other benefits, like more content. The interface could incentivize the player to make awful decisions. The player could "see" and "hear" things and not question them because it's a game. At the end of the game, the player would learn they were hallucinations.
The game that was launched, though, seems to be a bad story and doesn't take advantage of video game particularities. That suggests production didn't have an idea that fits the character. And designers couldn't find it. The developers are technicians. They have to follow specifications.
This game is a 10/10 for immersion, after buying the game you'll feel how miserable Gollum really is and how he felt when his "precious" was taken from him.
They takes it from us, Precious! Tricksy hobbitses stole our money! GOLLUM. GOLLUM.

The game really missed an opportunity for the main mechanic involving having to make decisions that has the player siding with either Sméagol or Gollum. Having Sméagol’s choices being less effective or taking more and more cost/energy until Gollum slowly consumes nearly every character choice
Hi-Fi rush and tears of the kingdom are the only things keeping me sane for this year of gaming
There's also System Shock 2023, courtesy of Nightdive Studios.
Hopefully Spider-Man 2 as well
Personally I have been fine. Tears of the Kingdom is definitely great, but I also adored Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe personally. I also just find myself filling the void of brand new games with slightly older indie games that I haven't played or haven't finished. Right now I'm trying to fully complete Shovel Knight Treasure Trove and the last couple years I filled those voids with Bug Fables, The Binding of Isaac, and MO:Astray (if you haven't heard of that last one I wouldn't blame you, it's more obscure). That has just been my personal experience though, not everyone can be so lucky.

Gollum is a story about how greed can turn you into a hollow husk, a shadow of your former self.
And I'd guess the actual game's plot is probably something similar, too.
Sad part is: Smeagol couldn't really help it considering the corruptie and seductive power of the One Ring which could tempt powerful beings like Saruman and strong men like Isildur and Boromir. This game has no such redeeming factors! Gollums story is of what corruptive greed and power can do to a person, especially a schizophrenic mentally ill person like Smeagol, and also a taste of what addiction can do to a person. This game however is just a story of greed and how little respect corporate shitbags have these days for their customers and they think a little textbook corporate apology tweet is gonna fix this mess...
It was the same story for CyberPunk 2077. A game about why you should never trust the corps. Made by a corp that lied, misrepresented, and overall should not have been trusted to make that game.

@@buckrodgers1162 It's been a common trend over the years and it's getting increasingly tiresome, time after time where games aren't fully finished.

Ubisoft games are boring and tedious but at least they work, and some people don't mind the bland gameplay so long as they can see those world recreations in high fidelity. That said, doesn't Ubi have always online garbage?
@@Walamonga1313 not always but plenty of times. Gameplay is plain but story is good, they know how to write villains (far cry series). I still don't know what Gollum bring to the table, let alone charge 70+ and lock authentic VO behind a paywall.
@@Always-Hustleskull and bones is the equivalent to an unwanted pregnancy in a place where abortion is outlawed
Bruh, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE UBISOFT. They'll take this as a challenge and beat you to it
For real. When Ubisoft looks like an acceptable alternative compared to your company, you might as well just shut it down while you're ahead, so to speak.
Fun Fact: Every corporate apology includes the word "continue."
huh... interesting
Seriously, what's going on with these game developers. How could they be okay with releasing something this bad...it truly boggles my mind🤔
Just when you thought the state of the gaming industry couldn't get any worse
Oh it’s gonna get even worse than this here soon
We really do need to start looking into class action false advertising suits against game companies that lie in their promotional materials.
Cod first
Yall couldn’t even go against Elden Ring nerf patches for single player offline 😂
i definitely want to see it happen.
How can every other industry legally get slapped around for false advertising but the games industry doesn't?
i say it just a matter of time.

You just know they had that apology written weeks in advance, maybe even months.
You can get it in Elvish for 20$ as a DLC.
Game was delayed for like almost a year so I guess they had the apology written for the original release date. 😝
the apology has better grammar than the lore compendium lmao
I was so surprised when I heard that a random German developer who up until now only released 2D point and click adventures, got the IP to LOTR somehow with graphics that seem way out of their comfortable and doable range. I'm not at all surprised how it turned out, lmao.
I read the thumbnail and for a sec thought you were talking about Gollum the character lol
the apology started with "we apologize for your underwhelming experience" like come on, at least acknowledge that this is them, not us. we've all seen all these "it's you not us" statement, how stupid do they think we are
Also they call it "The Lord of Ring"? Am I missing something here?
The reason they probably worded it like that is because if you're a company and you admit fault to something, it opens you up to lawsuits.
Regardless of that, I do agree with you, these responses are obnoxious.
"I'm sorry you got offended," -Sociopath trying to apologise.
Definitely the apologies of all time. I can feel gollum coming inside of me 😍
@@NetBattler the actual??????🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😆😆😆😂😂😂

“Don’t be sorry, be better.”
Words to live by.
Being better is more expensive and thus less money to line executive pockets. These jokers can only dream of delivering a quality game like GoW if this is the best they can do!
@@DiscusvissenRocken Just how it goes man. We’re going to get another video game crash soon enough. History repeats itself if we learn nothing from it, and from the looks of things, we’ve managed to get worse.
Pretty much @Nova and as long as people keep buying these bad unfinished games these corporate dirtbags will keep doing this since it is easier and it fills the executives pockets just the same. They know full well the developers will receive the brunt of the backlash anyways while these greedy corporate fuckers who are responsible for the sorry state games are being in released atm due to rushing releases for financial quarter numbers to make themselves loom good in the eyes of greedy investors who care zero shits for gaming and only care about getting more money than they will ever need
Did you just ASSUME A STANDARD OF COMPETENCY BY WHICH I AM TO BE JUDGED? HOW. DARE. YOU.
Better get ready for a real serious lawsuit Mister.
Great advice to live by in life.
Gaming today is a scam. A greedy scam! [⚆︹⚆]
Im terrified of the day the Tolkien estate gets fed up with game developers making half-assed or stupid mistakes on the games and just stops allowing games to have the IP all together.
“Apology not accepted not sorry” yong speaking for the whole community of gamers
"Apology not accepted" I couldn't have said it better. Daedalic has done irreparable damage to their reputation.
I only think you should be upset if you actually bought the game and it didn't deliver.
People will keep buying such slop
@royaltyfree9607 Haha! You dullard. I don't care about big corporations and this zoomer Socialist big bad corporations mentality. I will buy this game just to spite you now. I'm gonna enjoy playing this Gollum Eurojank double A game.
I would legit be embarrassed to work for this company. How did this get greenlit? I think gamedev students could make a better game.
I swear all game studio's have a set script that they copy and paste and alter so that it doesnt seem like they copied from somewhere. Like legit all apologies just blur together because of how alike they all are
This company literally saw what happened with Rings of Power and said hold my chalice.
At this point, AAA game companies should should just have a common apology page that they stick behind the ToS page for every game they release.
This is far from being an " AAA " game
They can make the apology page as big as Wikipedia, but it will do zilch to fix any of the jankiness pervading their games.
@@mordor1779they're an Indie game studio. Idk why or HOW Deadlic chose to work on this. As a studio they found their success with point and click adventures which are really good. So isk how OR why they thought it was a good idea to work on a triple a game like this.
Proposing we change the AAA designation to FFF.
@@BlueHarvey Ambition would be my guess, but they bit off way more than they could chew. I don't think every game studio wants to create only one genre forever... Point and Click games are pretty niche and bad for growth.
The critics are giving it a "this isn't a game/10"😂
Ahahahahaha. Yo, this needs more likes.
Tolkien estate should sue for reputation damage and lost revenue. Realistically, this trend of taking a beloved IP and using it to peddle garbage is a formula to LOSE MONEY. Eventually people associate your brand with shitty quality and they stop buying.
And they had the nerve to charge extra for Sindarin.
Surprised they didn't put the apology letter behind the $60 paywall
Don't you dare give them idea's....
😂
It seems like, for the past few years, most of the gaming industry just gave up making great games and are starting to give us half baked stuff like this
I wish people would stop buying DLC.
Because you all keep buying it lol
Your name best describes the triple aaa companies
And who's fault is that?
You guys gotta stop throwing money at people.
I think there are still a lot of good games that come out. Though there are some high profile games that have had issues the past few years.
It would have been cool if the stealth let you use the ring and turn invisible. And the game could have just been how he went insane from using it so often.
unfortunately that would be a huge plot hole in the lord of the rings lore. By that point in the story (when Gollum is captured and in Mordor), Bilbo had taken the ring from him and was living in the Shire for maybe decades, he was captured and interrogated so he'd tell the orcs who had the ring, so he couldnt have the ring there.
Now question how did they obtain the lisence for this game
Cause they paid for it. Tolkien estate didn’t give them the license. The video game rights for the core LOTR stuff was sold along time ago.
Heck, Amazon is basing their tv show off the appendix info in LOTR books as Tolkien Estate won’t sell rights to the Silmarillion
In 2003 I remember sitting in my room playing GameCube and thinking to myself what the future of video games would be like in 20 years. Unimaginable leaps in technology would change everything and turn gaming into something completely indistinguishable.
Well, here we are!
Always goes great when investors control a creative and artistic industry!
Off topic but I love your name! Alice in Chains is one of the all time greats.
Pinnacle was in that era full of possibilities.
Alice In Chains is awesome
That's corporate culture for ya. Pollutes and corrupts everything it touches and will always only be about filling the pockets of filthy rich executives and investors at any cost without any regard for creativity and passion. There is at least 100 people that can do spot on Gollum impersonations on the internet and they chose this dude?
Right?!!!
My friend from middle school did the impression twice as well! No exaggeration.
dude wake up. this game clearly had a very low budget. voice acting was probably the last thing they were worried about.
Honestly I'm going to laugh my ass off when the studio responsible declares bankruptcy because of this.
The font is Calibri, the current default font in Microsoft Office.
The "Gollum cannot kill ORCS wearing helmet" sentence combined with the early 2000 CG model of Gollum is just amazing, honestly.
Peak shitpost image
If you squint; the model for Gollum also kinda looks like Edna Konrad (Edna & Harvey: The Breakout), if she went 80 years without eating or drinking. Humorously; ‘Keeping Up With The Daedalics’ shows that Edna doesn’t have a high opinion of Gollum - for obvious reasons.
It is amazing how fast they can push out those "we are sorry" statements, if only they would put as much effort into making their games.
Well, it's easy to do when you plan ahead.
Those statements are probably written up and ready to be sent before release
Pretty sure writing a statement is the first thing they do before starting a development.
I'll bet they just hired a ghost writer and didn't actually write it.
To be fair, if they didn't push one out people would crap on them for being too slow on their response...
Putting the actual voiceover behind a paywall is darkly funny.
Im looking forward to a Batman game voiced by PeeWee Herman with Batmans actual voice behind a give us money wall 😂
I am legitimately shocked that Daedalic would drop such a massive turd. They've had a really good track record with their games. There is no way they didn't know this game was in such an unplayable state. It almost like they tried to develop a game with all the worst glitches and bugs of 3D gaming from the year 2000.
It blows my mind that this project was conceived, greenlit, developed for years, certified gold, and actually released AND for full price. What a catastrophe, we need a worst game of the year awards this year.
dont forget that its already fully funded for a sequel
Redfall and other bad games are getting tough competition lol 😂
This is not a surprise especially for a WB Games release. This is their normal standards for the past decade.
Wait for Angry Joe's top ten worst and top ten most disappointing games, it'll probably be on there. Joe, Other Joe and Alex are all pretty big LoTR fans so they'll be plenty incensed. The review will be hilarious.
there doesn't seem to be any good incentive to release this game other than to meet a deadline and a bottom line, because anyone who was directly involved with developing this should've raised alarm bells and either delayed this to fix and polish it up some more, or better yet just cut their losses and can this to preserve their own dignity and not tarnish their reputation and association with such an iconic IP
but that they made the conscious decision to make a "precious" edition and offer DLCs on launch shows how little they care other than to shove this turd and put a price tag to it.
It seems like they actually tried to make a game that would piss everyone off
I think they managed to make a game that is so terrible it's good.
@user-fb4mn4oc6w I disagree. I see this game and it's eurojank and how terrible it looks and can't wait to play it.
@W1llKi11edSnake07 well if you find ET game fun then sure...
Blizzard must be so jealous right now.
Deadalic was an excellent development studio that created 2D click-and-point adventures, made with a love to detail and dedication. Then they changed management and shifted to 3D games, and it was downhill from there. It is regrettable, really.
YongYea's final score for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is: "Da Game's Fecked!" / 10! 😅
They put more effort into apology letter than actual game it seems.
the damn thing has typos, I don't think effort is something Daedalic Entertainment is capable of!
@@christopherrowe7860 Maybe they are just really bad at grammar? 😅
Could also explain abismal code
Lmfao 😂😂😂😂
And even then they weren't able to write the name of their own game correctly during the entire apology statement (in the first line they wrote "The Lord of Ring: Gollum")
It's the Ride to Hell: Retribution of the 2020s, although unfortunately for the developers the IP attached to this game will give it a lot more notoriety.

great review. from a lot of the reviews I've seen most are poking at the unfinished product but you called this what it really needs to be called, which is just a shameless cash grab at the expense of consumers and when the developer/publishers got caught they release and robotic statement with zero accountability or recognition of what they were trying to do. Which is just swindle you out of your money. So thank you for saying it, I feel that more need to be focusing on the pure predatory actions of this game and others like it.
